does auto update and auto scan really work?

I had just renewed my subscription and downloaded Norton360 on my Hp PC. Before I went on vacation, I set it up to Auto Update and Auto Scan every day just as I always do, even when I am home. I returned from vacation, my PC was booting up and shutting down every 2 or 3 minutes. Obviously something had sneaked in under the radar?  there was nothing I could do.

I finally just had to buy a new HD and new software.  I was wondering if, since my subscription was new, would the Norton " Promise" be in effect for this? I didn't notice the problem soon enough to be able to get on line to tech support. I tried Power Eraser with no success. but the PC would not stay booted up long enough to get on line.

I really don't need an answer here, but some comments or suggestions would be nice.  I will try to get an answer from Norton Customer Support. about a refund of subscription and maybe some help on the cost of a new HD and new software since their software did not seem to do the job? .  I am a retired Viet vet. and can't be throwing out money like it grew on trees.

AFAIK, the Norton promise only extends to the new product Norton Security, and not to the legacy products.

No single security product can protect from the thousands of new malware released every day.

There should not have been any reason to purchase new hardware. You could have posted here for help in getting things working again.

If you want to clean the old hard drive, you can put it back into the computer and go to one of the free malware removal sites we suggest.

I would suggest you sign up at one of the free Malware Removal sites below. Do not try to do anything on your own as it could make things harder for the Malware Removal expert at that site to help you. Choose one and stay there until your system is clean.

A rebooting loop doesn't necessarily indicate a malware issue (most weird behaviors are related to hardware or software problems, not malware).  If no one was home during your vacation using the computer to visit websites or download programs, where would the presumed malware have come from?

Re: does auto update and auto scan really work?

Thanks for the reply F4E, I have already chatted with Norton Support. The guy I spoke to, didn't quite understand what I was trying to tell him.  My old HD drive was useless, wouldn't even boot up. the error code was telling me to replace the HD also, other techs tome me this. HP and Microsoft.  I purchased and installed a new hard drive, purchased new software from Microsoft and in stalled it.  I told the last Microsoft Tech. this, but he kept insisting that I get the other tech support on line to fix my PC.  He didn't know about the "promise"

I will contact Norton again, by snailmail, may get some resolution that way. I had just purchased / resubscribed to my Norton 360.

Thank you again for your reply.

The Virus Protection Promise is applicable for Norton 360, Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus. However, you will only have the VPP when you purchase the product online or for the products purchased from the retail store, you would have to enroll automatic renewal upon registering it to your Norton Account.   So, same VPP rules for legacy and new...after Sept 23rd 2014
With regards to the Automatic renewal, Norton sends prebilling notification 30 days before your Norton expires and bills 15 days before it expires.  You may cancel automatic renewal at any time ...suggest providing enough time for Norton not to bill.   As always your mileage may vary.

It sounds, in that case, as if you had a hardware failure.  There would be no reason to replace a working hard drive if it were a software issue - you could simply reinstall Windows in that case.  All hard drives will fail eventually.  If you had a hardware failure, it is hard to imagine that Norton would be somehow at fault.

Hi peteweb, thank you for your reply.  My NEW HD and software are working fine.  It is the HD I just replaced that had the issues. I will keep those links handy, just in case I get it trouble again.

Thanks again.
