Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

Hi .. I just set this up and it looks like I have everything working ok so far, but I wanted to see how IM and Social Networking sites are added.  Are they automatically detected and added to the monitoring if I have it turned on?

I tried testing, but I have not seen any activity yet.  Thanks for the help.

Re: Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

Yes, they are automatically detected if following conditions are met:

1) On Web Portal (web site onlinefamily.norotn.com), Social supervision and Chat supervision are turned on for the child.

2) On his machine, child logs into a supported social networking site. Please see the list of supported Social Networking Sites at https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/help/social-networking.jsp

3) On his machine, child logs into IM and chats with a buddy. Note that both child's IM id and buddy Id will be reported on Web Portal once child starts or tries to start a converation with the buddy. If child just logs in and logs out of the IM without communicating (or attempt to communicate) to a buddy then ids are not detected. Please note that Web-based IMs like meebo.com are not supported as of now.

Also, give 5 to 10 minutes for activities to appear on Web Portal.

Re: Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

Savidon,

Once you have turned on Social Networking and IM monitoring for your child, these are the sites that the program will monitor....

OnlineFamily.Norton monitors and records the social networking activities of your kids. Supported social networking Web sites include the following:

  • Bebo
  • Facebook
  • Friendster
  • hi5
  • MySpace
  • myYearbook
  • Netlog
  • Orkut
  • Tagged
  • Xanga
  • Windows Live Spaces

OnlineFamily.Norton supports

  • Yahoo Messenger
  • MSN Messenger
  • Windows Live Messenger
  • AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
  • Google Talk
  • and any other instant messenger program that uses the same protocol as one of these services.

OnlineFamily.Norton does not support instant messaging applications in a Mac.

If you are looking for child's Social Networking and IM ids on Web Portal then please look under "Settings". Note that activities like access of social networking sites or conversation with IM buddy are reported under the "Activity" section of Web Portal but accounts are detected and listed under the "Settings" section.

Re: Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

Syed,

In the Instant Messaging settings section it says "All IM Friends are considered "New" friends until an IM conversation with that person has been monitored by OnlineFamily.Norton.".

Does this mean it will only record the content of a chat the first time my child chats with an IM contact?  If so, how can I log ALL IM conversations whether it is the first time or not?

Pmlemiex,

In the Instant Messaging settings section it says "All IM Friends are considered "New" friends until an IM conversation with that person has been monitored by OnlineFamily.Norton.".

What that means is that the current friends your child has will be condired new the first time they connect to them. So what will happen is that the default setting they get will be based on that selection. If you set your child to Monitored, it will set all new contacts with your child as Monitored until you change the individual setting for that contact.

Does this mean it will only record the content of a chat the first time my child chats with an IM contact?  If so, how can I log ALL IM conversations whether it is the first time or not?

No, all conversations will be monitored if you set the contact to monitored. That is only the setting that new contacts will take until you change them.

What IM client is your child using on their machine?

Currently Yahoo Instant Messenger is being used but obviously I want to know if another is being used as well and this tool should help me catch that.

Re: Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

My account has both the Chat function and the Social Networking function enabled and I cannot see any of the friends or the conversations that my son has on facebook. We just installed the latest software last night and I can see that the Web tracking is working as well as searching and time limits. But the social and IM function is not working.

Re: Does it automatically detect IM and Social Networking accounts?

Hi jondavisct,

OnlineFamily.Norton supports following Instant Messengers to monitor Instant Messaging activity for your child:

• Yahoo Messenger

• MSN Messenger

• Windows Live Messenger

• AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) - (Note: AIM 7.0 is currently not supported.)

• Google Talk

OnlineFamily.Norton currently does not support Web browser based clients of Instant Messengers listed above and doesn't support monitoring Chat from MySpace and FaceBook.  It's on our enhancement list to support them.

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie
