Does other security software cause install problems

Hope somebody can help.

I just brought a licence for Norton Security from an online retailer that needs to be added to my account but shouldn’t be problem my question is this.

If I have any existing Security software (AVG,Comodo and others) on trials period that have expired but are left on my laptop will the installation fail ?

If so how do I find them and remove since I can’t remember them all

Many thanks

Re: Does other security software cause install problems

Hi grem41:

Users are always advised not to run more than one antivirus program at the same time, since the overlap in protection can cause conflicts if both security programs try to compete for the same Windows resources and/or perform actions like removal of detected malware at the same time.  See the Norton support article Problems Running Multiple Security Products for further information.  One antivirus like Norton Security (NS) that runs in real-time protection mode (i.e., that starts protecting your computer as soon as your computer boots up) to detect higher-risk malware like viruses, trojans, etc. and one reputable on-demand anti-malware scanner like Malwarebytes Free that you can use to run the occasional manual scan for lower-risk PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) like browsers hijackers and adware should be sufficient for most users.

Any third-party antivirus and firewall programs that are not built in to your Win 7 SP1 operating system [including trial versions of AVG, Comodo, etc. as well as Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), if installed] should be uninstalled from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.  After the Control Panel uninstall(s) and a system re-boot any stray registry entries or files that could interfere with Norton Security should also be wiped with the manufacturer's removal tool.  ESET has posted links to removal tools for most popular antivirus programs at https://support.eset.com/kb146/.  If you need help finding the correct removal tool just make note of the names of any security programs you find at Programs and Features and post back with a list.

Re: Does other security software cause install problems

Thanks for the prompt reply just reviewed it. Used ESET links and software to get rid of McAfee doesn’t appear to be anything else only the following all by Symantec.

  • Norton Online Backup,
  • Norton Security
  • Norton Security Scan

Can you RnR to uninstall the lot ?

Also, I note from research the RNR tool it uninstalls Norton Internet Security as I had that definitely had that ! but I'm worried it will reinstall over the trial edition of Norton Security so my laptop is covered but not the phone as I believe Norton Internet Security only had the ability to be installed on PC not mobiles hence Norton Security intro in 2014 is that right ?

Sorry for the long winded reply

Re: Does other security software cause install problems

Hi grem41:

You're correct that Norton Internet Security (NIS) can only be installed on Windows PCs while Norton Security (NS) is multi-device (i.e., PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets).  The only exception is Norton Security Basic (antivirus only, no firewall or backup, 1 PC only).

What Norton Security (NS) product did you purchase?  There are four different versions -  Basic, Standard, Deluxe and Premium - and a product comparison chart showing the different features for each version can be found at https://us.norton.com/norton-security-with-backupNS Premium (a.k.a Norton Security with Backup or NSBU) has a built-in backup feature that includes 25 GB of cloud storage, and if this is the version you purchased you might not want to continuing paying for a separate license for Norton Online Backup.

Also note that it might not be necessary to uninstall the 30-day trial version of Norton Security. If you go to Help | Account Information |  Enter Product Key you should be able to type in your new 25-digit product key to activate your one-year subscription.  Norton introduced a feature called Single Layout in v22.12 that will activate the appropriate features (e.g., firewall, backup, etc.) in your Norton product depending on the product key you use for activation - see SendOfJive's explanation <here>.

The Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool has two different modes.  Using the NRnR tool in "normal" mode as instructed at https://www.norton.com/nrnr can be used if you have a minor problem with your Norton installation (e.g., Automatic LiveUpdates aren't running correctly after a product update) and you want to refresh your installation by uninstalling and reinstalling your licensed Norton antivirus product (e.g., NIS, N360, NS Deluxe, etc.).  When you run the NRnR tool in "normal" mode it should only detect and re-install licensed Norton products that are currently installed on your computer so it shouldn't re-install an old version of NIS that has already been uninstalled.

Using the NRnR tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode as instructed at https://www.norton.com/nrt performs a much deeper wipe and will remove multiple Norton products, including Norton Utilities, Norton Family, etc.  The only Norton product I use is Norton Security Premium so when I want to fix a problem I usually perform a clean reinstall (including a wipe with the NRnR tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode) as instructed in freespace77's thread Windows Defender Still Active.  This advanced "Remove Only" mode will also remove traces of old Norton installations (e.g., orphaned registry entries and files) that are sometimes left behind after a Control Panel uninstall.

I believe running the NRnR tool in advanced "Remove Only" would uninstall both Norton Security and Norton Online Backup, but I'm not certain if running the NRnR tool in "normal" mode could do any harm to your Norton Online Backup.  I've never used Norton Online Backup myself, so you should contact the official Norton Customer Support via Live Chat at https://www.norton.com/chat if this is a concern.

Please read kurt2121's thread Norton Security Scanner 2007 for more information about the free Norton Security Scan utility.  It's not a full antivirus product (Norton sometimes bundles this utility with other Norton products - see bjm_'s screenshot <here>) and as far as I know it won't be removed by the NRnR tool.  In my opinion the Norton Security Scan utility is a PUP (potentially unwanted program) that Norton uses as a promotional tool to convince users to upgrade to a paid product like Norton Security and I'd suggest uninstalling it from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.

Re: Does other security software cause install problems

Hi imacri

Sorry for the delay in replying but success thank you plus Kudo added

FYI

  • I just brought an NS Deluxe licence

  • The Norton Online Backup was the trial version that came with a boxed NIS copy I seem to remember approx 2012 that I could uninstall through Start| Control Panel | Programs | Program & Features that was easy, all that was left was the mention of it under programs but it must have been next to nothing and a hyperlink to get another trial.

  • Norton Security Scan like you said plus the link you mentioned was a PUP deleted using method as above

  • Use RnR normal mode NS trial uninstalled and reinstalled back after reboot less 2 orphans, if Norton Online Backup and NIS was there not now

  • Enter new License subscription key on trial edition for laptop and then mobile.

Thanks

Re: Does other security software cause install problems

Hi grem41:

Thanks for the feedback.

If your new NS Deluxe starts displaying any glitchy behaviour (e.g., Automatic LiveUpdates occasionally fail, scheduled scans don't run, etc.) and you suspect that the remnants of previous (expired) Norton programs are causing problems try the clean reinstall instructions in freespace77's thread Windows Defender Still Active.  That should clean up most of the orphaned Windows registry entries and data files in C:\ProgramData\Norton, C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\... etc. left over from your expired NIS and Norton Online Backup installations.  If you don't want to use the online stub installer when you reach Step # 4 of those instruction (i.e., log in to your Norton Account and use the yellow Download button on the Subscriptions tab) you can also re-install the NS Deluxe using the latest full offline installer from https://www.norton.com/latestns.

I have a 32-bit OS and I've never had much success trying to refresh my Norton installations using the NRnR tool in "normal" Remove and Reinstall mode as instructed at https://www.norton.com/nrnr, so by default I always go straight to the clean reinstall instruction as outlined in freespace77's thread now if I need to re-install Norton.
