Does Windows Defender Application Guard have some impact on NS

The new Windows Defender Application Guard extension ( https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-windows-defender-application-guard-extensions-for-chrome-and-firefox ), is interesting as it makes you possible to look at untested/untrusted web sites in isolated environment, but I was wondering if that has any influence with NS.

P.S. I am missing the spelling opportunity, hope they bring it back

Hello Gretar. You'd first have to be an Windows Insider to get the extensions per the article. I read this writeup on Neowin yesterday also.  So unless you are an insider running an insider build we won't possibly see these until at least version 1903 goes to RTM. Maybe even later since it will be a part of the new Chromium based Edge.

It's exclusive to Insiders for now, but it will be available for everyone soon

Insider builds on Norton products are NOT a guarantee to work properly since those versions of Windows are BETA. For that reason there isn't much I can personally give you for information as to how these would affect NS or other Norton products. They WILL "sandbox" the checking of URL per this statement. Norton doesn't have that capability at the present time. We could only wish.

The way it works is the same way it does in Edge, but checking the URL you navigate to against a list of trusted websites. If it's found that you're navigating to an untrusted site, it will open in a sandboxed Microsoft Edge browser. From there, you can navigate to any website, whether it's trusted or not, as it won't be able to harm your system.

Windows Defender which these will rely upon, has most of its functionality taken over by a third party A/V solution when installed.

Cheers

Re: Does Windows Defender Application Guard have some impact on NS

Hi SoulAsylum and thank you for your answer. You can install this expentsions now without being an Windows Insider, see the links at the bottom of the aricle, same in https://betanews.com/2019/03/16/windows-defender-application-guard/ ( You can get the extension for Chrome and Firefox now) . But as you mention this is perhaps in late beta stage now, even if they allow users to install it and it will not be generally available until ver. 1903, perhaps later.

Did install the extension for Chrome and it did go well. It is running in an isolated environment  so it is sandboxed. Looks promising, but now I have to stumble into an untrusted website, if I would like to test the effect, but I try to avoid that kind of websites.

Indeed so, I missed that last paragraph somehow and thanks for the info.  I personally wouldn't get these extensions as they COULD do negative things with Norton installed that Norton hasn't taken note of.

Re: Does Windows Defender Application Guard have some impact on NS

Hi Soul Asylum, I was wondering about that it could be some conflicts between NS and Defender so perhaps I will put this on hold and uninstall this Chrome extension, until it will be generally available  .
