Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

I have Norton 360 intalled but I have problems when live update runs on my Destop PC. It seems to have problems completing the download of the virus definitions though all the other files download OK.

I suspect that this is due to the fact that the definitions is quite a large file. the other PC, a laptop, has no problems, so it sounds like an issue with the desktop.

Please could you tell me if it is possible to download the definitions onto the laptop and then install them onto the desktop. this would be a get round, util I sort out the real issue with the desktop.

Thanking you in advance. Harold H.

Hi Harold,

It sounds like you need to sort out the desktop problem first. One of the first things many infections will try to do is protect themselves from discovery and removal. Norton's primary mission is to discover and remove that type of infection.

I will assume that you have run the usual scans and found nothing. If that is the case then it might be wise to go to one of the sites listed below and have them help you discover if an infection is the problem.

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

Hello Dick.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I noticed this problem round about July 2013 and finished up completely reloading W7 onto a new hard Disk drive.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that I sometinimes have problems when downloading or uploading files as small as 5Mb. All I do with these, is to download and upload via my laptop, which is running good old XP.

I am also running NetWorx to monitor my Broadband usage. One thing that I have noticed, is when there is no network activity, I get a spike of data every 40 seconds. when looking at the Resource Monitor this seems to coincide with svchost.exe(LocalServicePeernet) which pertains to IPv6). I understand this to be part of W7.

I attempted a manual Live update, this morning and 7 items were downloded, including Norton Virus definitions X64. all but the Virus definitions were successfully iupdated. I seem to vaguely remember that there was a location that I could go to on the Norton site to download and save the Virus definitions. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you for the help so far.

Best Wishes

Hi Harold_H,

I believe you are referring to the Intelligent Updater.

Please also verify your system clock's date time and time zone are accurate.

Hi Yank. THanks for prompt response.

Yes. Intewlligent Updater was the one that I was thinking about.

I have just been onto the sute and successfully downloaded the file to my laptop and then transferred it to my Desktop.

I run the program and it appeared to execute the Update OK, but I could not finf the logfile that was mentioned in the closing dialog.

Please could you tell me how to see what definitions are currently loaded.

Sorry Harold - but you lost me - where is this info regarding a log?

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

Hello again Yank.

When I ran the intelligent update from my dekstop, I got a dialog box saying the update had been successful and I could see the infirmation in a file "Log.IntelleigentUpdater.txt" in my teporary files folder.

Having not been able to find this folder ot file, i was looking for away to check the status of definition files, to confirm that the update had indeed been succesful.

Thanks and Best Wishes.

I eventualy found the log, mentioned in my last post.

It was placed into C:\users\HAROLD\AppData\Local\Temp\ and is named Log.InteligentUpdater.txt.

It is a 21 Kb file that gives a blow by blow log of the istalationof the Virus Definitions.

A bit of bed time reading, to cure insomnia.

My O/S is W7 with IE11.

Try removing NetWorx. I have experienced and seen others report issues while using that monotoring software. Removing it cleared up all my problems.

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

I apologise for the delay in getting back to you but, after going through all the sugestions,I finally tracked the problem down to a driver

The pc that I have, A HP pavilion Slimline Desktop, appears to have ben designed around the then current OS (Vista) and did not appear to be supported beyond that, though the MS W7 comptibility test showed it to be OK.

The inbuilt NIC is a Realtek RTL8201 adaptor and I evetually found a W7 compatible driver, on the Realtek site.

Installing that driver seems to have fixed the problem with downloading large files. The acid test will come this weekend, whn I do a manual live udate. I that is successful, I wil set the update back to automatic.

I would like to thank all contributors to this, including Dick, Yank and PeterWeb. all comments and sugestions were found to be useful. My PC now has a new lease of life.

Best Wishes.  Harry H

You are quite welcome and if it passes the acid test this weekend with the LiveUpdate, please come back and not only let us know - but also mark your last post as the solution so others may find the solution.

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

I have just run a manual live update and, initially it failed but asked me to turn off Networkx, whilst a 'patch' was installed.

Once the patch was installed, I re-initiated the Live update and this was completed successfully.

As metioned in one of the earlier posts, Networx may have been contributing to the problem.

Next time a live update is due, I will run it with Networx on and, if the update fails, I will repeat it with Networx off and let you know of the outcome. Generally, I consider the problem to be solved thanks to contributors metioned in my previous post.

Best Wishes.

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

Glad to hear things seem to be coming together.

I cannot recommend a possible replacement for Networx because I stopped monitoring. You might try looking for another program if it does still give you problems.

Is there a specific reason you need to monitor your network?

Re: Downloading Definitions for use on a differnt PC

The reason to monitor started last August when, for some reason, I widely exceeded my BT 10GB limit.

I went through all the obvious causes, even disabling Wifi, though I knew that it was secure.

I weeded out a number of programs that were excessively updating and controlled other programs that I needed to keep on the PC.

At that point, I installed Networx BW monitor and discovered tat the problem was due to Several unsuccessful re-attempts by Norton to execute a live update.

Just in case there was a nasty there that Noton could not see (Heaven forbid) I did a complete clean reinstall of W7 on a new Hard Disk drive but still experienced the same problems.

The olny thing that stopped me throwing the PC through the window was the knowledge that the windows were more expensive than the PC!

Eventually, I discovered that the NIC driver had issues and on updating that, the light appeared at the end of the tunnel.

At this stage, I would have been at the point where I could dispense with the NetWorx monitor exept, would you believe the BT's own usage monitor has now gone belly up, so for the time being, NetWorx stays, warts and all.

Incidently, earlier versions of NetWorx than 5.2.10, 64bit, run with W7, can cause intermittent Blue Screen of Death when the 'Ignore local traffic within the LAN' is selected in the main settings window.

Sorry to have gone on a bit but, some one else might benefit from this.

Best Wishes.
