This forum thread needs a solution.

Drive, File, Folder and Custom scan(s) can't access

I select custom scan but on the Scan page the boxes for Drive, File, Folder are grayed out so can't access.  

When I try to create a custom scan for an external drive, it gets set up but won't run - it just keeps cycling through the set up screens.

How do I scan this external drive?

Hi, madmax. What is your OS and Norton product ?

If you have Win 10 as I do, go to This PC setting, and right click on the external disk icon.

You will then see a Norton Security option to Scan Now. Hope that's what you want.
