driver update scam

I received notification by a supposed microsoft partner that my drivers were out of date. In the fine print it mentioned $29 fee. I did not believe this official looking notice but I wondered if anyone else received such a message and this was something that should have been caught by Norton 360?

Re: driver update scam

hi ME Southard

There are possibly hundreds of such programs available.

Most try to catch people by enticing you with a "Free Download" which is in fact true to some extent as you are able to download the program without payment. I then scans your computer finally advising that you have multiple drives out of date will then offer to repair but then takes you to the web site to firstly make payment.

Whilst in general they do not do other than use dubious methods to try to make you buy the program if usually goes no further than that.

It is not uncommon you can see these programs advertised in many places.
