DVD/CD drive disappeared after installing Comcast's Norton.

My bad, could someone move this to the Other Products Forum - I know better than to post in 360 - sorry!

A little help for an OP over on COMCAST.  My suggestion would be to disbale real-time in Spybot, run McAfee remvoal tool, run NRT (a couple of times with reboots) get a fresh download of CNSS and install/run liveupdate until it responds no more updates available and let us now if their DVD/CD drive is back - however they indicated something about drivers.  Can someone help out here?  Their post is below - thanks in advance.

"I installed Norton on the last day McAfee was still covered...since then, I have lost the cd/dvd drive in my computer:

Windows Vista

Norton 4.1.0.32

Spybot S&D with Teatimer

The only fix I can seem to find is manually going in and editing the registry, which SHOULD NOT be Norton's fix. I did find a supposed download on Symantec's site for fixcd.reg, but it isn't anything but a text file, which basically means manually editing the registry with the info in the text file.

This problem has been going on for 2 weeks. I finally got fed up, and did a system restore, back to May 7th. It wiped Norton out, had parts of McAfee still installed, but I got my cd/dvd back. When I reinstalled Norton, the dvd drive disappeared gain.

I think it's because of the stupid "gear" driver that wants to use my dvd for a backup, but I use an external hard drive for that.

I cannot be the only one going through this...HELP!"

As an alternate way, try to use the Fix It tool from the following Microsoft Article which will fix the registry for you:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

fixcd.reg is not just a text file with the information to manually edit the registry. When you double-click the file, it will run those instructions so that you don't have to go to the registry and edit it.

Hello

The poster would still have to remove the remnants of McAfee with their removal tool and get a clean install of CNSS in my opinion.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit NSBU 22.17.0.183 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Thank you both very much for your replies.  I suggested to the OP they disbale real-time in Spybot, run McAfee remvoal tool, run NRT (a couple of times with reboots) get a fresh download of CNSS and install/run liveupdate until it responds no more updates available and let us now if their DVD/CD drive is back.  I have notheard anything back as of this time.

I will post back to the OP to run the fix yougesh_mohan suggested.

Thank you both again for your help.

Re: DVD/CD drive disappeared after installing Comcast's Norton.

As a followup on this thread, we just received a response to the thread on the COMCAST Forums from the OP.  It follows:

"Thanks,

I played around with this all day...the McAfee removal tool still claims it didn't remove all traces, though. FYI, I did use the McAfee uninstall to begin with, not the windows one. I must have run the removal tool 6 times, as administrator and regular mode.

I also ran the Norton removal tool, per your recommendation. When I did the reinstall of Norton, however, it seemed to think it had all the updates, etc., so I'm not really sure if it completely removed everything.

In any case, I STILL lost my dvd/cd drive on reinstall.

I did previously use the Microsoft Fix It tool, which saw a problem, but didn't fix it, even though I told it to. By the way, the error code on the dvd was error code 10, if that helps anyone else.

I followed all the instructions to install Norton to begin with, but, obviously, something went wrong. It really shouldn't have happened this way, but it did.

In the end, this is what worked: After the Norton install, it still lost the driver, and needed to have the registry tweeked. I went to  ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/li nked_files/Ghost/fixcd.reg I use Firefox, so I had to right click the link, select "save link as" and then add the extension ".reg" in the name line, select "all files" for extension. I saved to my desktop & right clicked to run as administrator. One reboot later, and presto: a dvd drive. (I know you didn't need all the steps, but I'm  sure someone else may appreciate them.)

Thanks, again!"

I thanked the OP for the excellent feedback and hopefully this info will help us, help others.

Re: DVD/CD drive disappeared after installing Comcast's Norton.

The cdfix.reg (registry fix) and manually below, after the PC restart resets the filters

a) Click on Start, then Run, and type regedit and press Enter

b) Make your way to this entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

c) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand pane.

UpperFilters

LowerFilters

UpperFilters.bak

LowerFilters.bak

d) If  any of the above keys  are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

e) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

f) Reboot your computer

g) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
