Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

When I reply to a thread the edit time starts counting down from  minutes.

If I click on the Subscribe link from the first post in that thread, the timer for the Edit time starts counting down from  seconds, and after 1 minute, I am unable to edit the post.

Hi Peter,

I am replying to your post to reproduce your issue.
I think what you say, to me it never happened

edited for test

2nd edit:

After I edited my post, the counter continued to count from 59 minutes.
So for me it works fine

Peter,

What you said is correct. I forgot to click the Subscribe button

Re: Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

Test : 1) checking before subscribing to OP. 2) Edit after 58 minutes success. Now trying after subscribing. 3) 'Me too' left with me 53 minutes to edit. 4) Clicking 'Subscribe' didnt reduce the edit time dramatically. 5) Logging out and back also have no effect. 6) Test to confirm the issue from my part didnt succeed. . But the time stamp has now become constant. Now I have only 30 minutes to edit this post after the initial time of creating this post.

Checking post sinking after editing. I notice that above post is having the time stamp static and stuck with original time of post, not edited time. Now checking if again editing it after creating this post will sink it to last . Test failed. My above post didnt sink to last. Post time is constant and edit time limited to 60 minutes after post is created initially. So no time resets anymore.

Re: Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

Peter I think this is an issue that was noted in the test period but it does not seem to impact the actual edit period.

Some actions trigger the timer from its normal minute measurement to a count in seconds which rapidly descends to zero.  I have never waited for it to hit zero and so do not know what happens then... it may then block editing.  However what I have found is that after I select subscribe, the timer shows just 60 seconds remaining.  But if I browse away and come back I still have what I would have originally expected e.g. 55 minutes left.

So in summary I think this is a cosmetic problem, with the possible exception if you wait for it to count down all the way to 0...

[Edit - I just subscribed to this thread and then waited for the counter to get to zero.  It showed that I could no longer edit this post.  So I moved away and came back... 58 minutes remaining and I produced this edit.  Are you happier now?  ]

Mike

interesting observation. I see the same now that you mention it. Going away and coming back does still give you the remaining edit time back.

I guess it is not as bad as I first thought.

Re: Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

This bug might be a cosmetic issue ... and it appears that there is a workaround (going away from thread and coming back) ... but new or first time users here may get confused/frustrated (seeing the countdown in seconds go to zero and not being able to edit). Since this problem seems to have been discovered during the beta test (and appears to be reproducible) ... then IMHO it's about time for it to be fixed. Perhaps if the auto-subscribe option worked, this bug might not happen as often.

Re: Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

geek47 in my view this is a cosmetic issue.  Everyone can continue to edit their posts for the full 60 minutes whether or not they decide to subscribe to the thread.

There are a number of non-cosmetic issues with the forums which we will all benefit from having fixed and which it appears will be some time in the coming.  I would not press for this issue to be dealt with until all the others have been.

I recognise that you may have a different point of view.

It's not only clicking the Subscribe link in the original post that triggers this behaviour.  I've observed that clicking the "Add Kudos" link on any reply in the thread also changes my edit time countdown from minutes to seconds.

Even if refreshing the page resets the countdown back to minutes, I don't consider this a "cosmetic" issue. I'm guessing there are quite a few newbies posting in this forum for the first time who don't know how buggy this new forum software is and now believe a 60-second countdown is all the time they're allowed for edits.

I confirm this, Imacri, I had made the same observation in my post sent on 17-Oct-2014 | 2:46PM

Re: Edit time cut when I subsccribe to thread

Just a reminder for the forum mods that the issue where the time to edit a post expires in 60 seconds (not minutes) if the user clicks a Subcribe or Add Kudo link in the same thread is still outstanding more than two years after it was first reported by peterweb.

To reproduce the issue:

  1. Add a reply in the Sandbox test thread (or any other thread in the forum).  After the reply has been posted the time remaining to edit the post will be 60 minutes.
  2. Click the Add Kudos link for any other reply on the page.  The remaining time to edit will begin to count down in seconds, not minutes (see image) and the user is unable to edit their post after the timer counts down from 60 to 0 seconds.
  3. Refresh the current page.  The time to edit will resume counting down in minutes and the user is able to edit their post again.
