El capitan

Installed Norton security for Mac today and then spent several hours trying to get back into my network and the web.  Even disabled Norton and still couldn't get online.  Just restarted into the HD sector with Yosemite and no Norton....back to normal.   Do not load Norton into a beta version of el capitan!!   Too bad there isn't a warning or an alternative before I installed this disaster.  beware!

Re: El capitan

I can confirm. The latest releases of OS X beta (developer and public release versions) will break your Norton install, which blocks you from the internet. Most likely has to do with the new OS X security/access which blocks the Norton kext files which essentially disables Norton. This affects any other apps using kext files to load the app at boot up (which for most people is only their antivirus/firewall app). Unfortunately, this was a move that Apple wants as stated in their developer documents. iOS is going a similar route too with "rootless".

Re: El capitan

Hi

when the final version of the new os x comes out in a few weeks.  Can Norton make Norton security for Mac work with os x el captain.  Norton works with windows 10.  I know that beta testers for el captain said that Norton does not work and there internet is broken.  I hope that Norton engineering team can due a work around patch for the final version of el captain. So Norton work with os x el captain.

thanks

Re: El capitan

Based on my conversation yesterday with a senior tech support person I think that Apple has their own plan for security that will make the current anti virus programs history.  It seems they will block their use.  I have tried eset and norton and they have both caused monumental problems.  They have my computer so screwed up that I am waiting on engineering support to try to straighten out my hard drive.  It has been split into three sectors and only the smallest is being used.  This is a 3TB with fusion drive.  The fusion drive may be the problem, but norton screwed it up.

Re: El capitan

Hi

Thanks for the reply.  I think that Apple is crazy about stopping installation of security software.  Microsoft lets your install any type of security software for there os.  I think that Norton should reach out to Apple on this issue.  I am going not install OS x el captain and continue to use the current Mac OS X.

Thanks

Re: El capitan

At least don't install the beta of el cap.  I'm only guessing about the antivirus.  With the wild reaction to el cap to Norton I'm wondering what's up.  Of course Norton said that they are busy with windoze 10 and not interested in el cap at this time.   We'll soon know the truth about el cap.  It will probably be announced on the 9th along with the other updates to ios and osx.  Want to look at something interesting look at opendns.  Stops some really nasty virus laden popups.

Re: El capitan

In general our goal is to provide zero day support for new operating systems. In other words to ensure that Norton continues to work on any update to a supported operating system on the day the operating system is released and made generally available. We do this by participating in vendor developer programs that provide us with details about any changes as well as early access to the new operating systems. Depending on the extent of the changes we then formulate a plan to update our in-field software to ensure our customers are ready.

Our approach to Apple OS X El Capitan follows this approach. Since the Apple developer conference in June we have been tracking their upcoming new release and testing our software against it. Unfortunately, generally the OS update is a moving target as companies like Apple and Microsoft continue to tweak features right up until very close to the release date.

We expect Apple to finalize their plan for OS X El Capitan this week and I will share more details about our plans then. Our goal is to provide zero day support for all Norton Internet Security for Mac, Norton AntiVirus for Mac, and Norton Security product lines which equates to client versions 5.x and 6.x.

Re: El capitan

Thank you for your explanation and update.  I expect problems with beta software, but el capitan with your current software was a disaster!  Still waiting for a method to recover my hard drive from Apple development engineering.  The second problem was the inability to get online when I installed your software.  The third problem is that I paid for ten licenses that I cannot use until you and Apple come together with programs that work.

Re: El capitan

Hi,

I am glad that Norton is going to work to make sure that os X el captain will wok with norton security.  Maybe Norton is going to due a patch for there software in a few weeks.  Thank you Gerry for updating us on el captain and Norton.  I look forward in reading more updates in the future.

Thanks

Re: El capitan

I have a little more detail on our plans for OS X El Capitan Support. As no doubt many of you saw this morning Apple set Sept 30 as their release date for El Capitan. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, our goal is to provide zero-day support for the new OS and so we are planning to release client updates in the days leading up to Sept 30.

Tentatively the updated clients will be:

- Norton Antivirus for Mac 12.8

- Norton Internet Security for Mac v 5.8

- Norton Security v 6.4

I should have more details to post in the coming 7 - 10 days.

As a reminder, the current in-field client versions are unfortunately not certified to run on El Capitan.

Re: El capitan

Thanks for the feedback.  I installed what should be the last beta of el cap.  V10.11.   Looks good so far.  Has straightened out all of my problems with my hard drive being split into three sectors.  It is a fusion 4TB hard drive.  Now shows one drive + fusion drive.  Haven't tried any of the new features.  Just want a computer that works normally and that will maintain a connection to the internet.   I'm looking forward to having a working antivirus/malware program.  I have been using opendns to block the popups that lockup the computer and offer to fix it if you call an 800# with credit card in hand.  You have to use command/option/escape to close your browser and then restart fresh and not restart all the websites you were using or it will lock it up again.

Re: El capitan

Thank you for the update Gerry, have been testing the Public Beta Versions of El Capitan from the beginning and am currently on GM candidate 1. Up until now I have had no problems running without Anti Virus protection but the doubt is always there. I will check back for updated information regularly.

Re: El capitan

gerry,

thanks for the updates. the current version of NIS does not work the the el capitan golden master release.

I hope/presume the update to norton comes soon, as updating the OS before the anti virus client will break internet connectivity.

It would have been nice if the opportunity was extended for apple OS beta testers to simultaneously beta test norton beta integration. i presume this is one application area where that isn't always feasible but as long as the engine is the same but integration changes it isn't entirely unreasonable.

Re: El capitan

Update.

WiFi works.  Scanning works.  Activation works.  All of the issues I've had during the El Capitan beta period now appear to work.  Here's what I did...

I downloaded and executed the application "removeSymantecMacFiles" from the Symantec web site (sorry, I forgot to save the URL, just search on the name).  This works better than using the NS Uninstall (uninstall leaves several files behind).

Then I went to my Norton account and (re)downloaded the latest version of the Norton Security Install files ("Install Norton Security.app" V6.2f85).  I then downloaded and installed the GM (Gold Master) version of El Capitan (from the Mac App Store app, select the Purchased tab.  Should be at or near the top - OS X El Capitan GM Candidate).

I first installed El Capitan, restarted.  THEN installed NS, restarted, performed a Live Update and restarted again.  It's been about four days and everything appears to be working flawlessly.

Your mileage may vary!

Re: El capitan

I would really like to hear something from Norton before I take a chance on totally screwing up my imac again.  Since they follow the forum maybe we will get the word.  I did reread the post that said they would be ready on day 1.  That is fast approaching!

Re: El capitan

Just installed on a clean installation of El Capitan GM and everything seems OK, I will see how things go for a couple of days and report back. Thanks tribble.

Re: El capitan

Don't bother to install Norton yet. I just tried.

As stated above, it won't break your internet connection anymore, oké joy joeperdepoep.. But more important: is Norton able to scan your mac for viruses. Answer: no.

It gives the same error as before. It is now trying to "fix" the problem by itself by downloading things for ages (you cannot really see what exactly is being downloaded, if anything at all, but it pretends to be busy)

Re: El capitan

Got the same thing here, network connection working fine but will not scan. Oh well, it looks as if we have to wait a little longer.

Re: El capitan

I can confirm that GM El Capitan and latest Norton Security for Mac (6.4 Build 36) and Norton Security Safari Plugin (6.2f85) does work!

Re: El capitan

Assuming you followed the uninstall advice (using the "removeSymantecMacFiles" application), then installing the El Capitan Gold Master (GM), you're absolutely right - just keep waiting for Symantec to push out a fix.  But the good news is, as you can see for yourself, some progress is being made.  More and more folks are finding the newest versions are working for them.  I've completed about 10 scans in the past 4-5 days and it APPEARS to be working well (I'll test the full/scheduled scan Monday AM).  I guess I, too, won't have 100% confidence until I see Symantec say "here it is, all fixed" though...  No other work-around, fix, suggestion or wacked idea worked for me before this clean install.  ...at least not for more than 30 minutes.

I was seeing the same problems as reported/mentioned across these forums (lost my wifi, no scans, no activation, that infernal "fixing" this or that error...  For ME, it all went away, as described above.  But just to be safe, remember - "your mileage may vary" ;-)

Sorry your mileage isn't the same, it is frustrating feeling that I'm not better protected.  Hopefully we all will be soon.

Re: El capitan

We released an update to the Mac client (6.4) in select channels last week. It's mostly there, but we wanted to do some final testing with the very latest El Capitan builds before pushing out to all customers. We are planning a patcher update a couple of days (9/28) before El Capitan is made generally available by Apple (9/30).

More details to follow in a day or two.

Re: El capitan

After i write my post Norton finished "fixing", and came up with a scan results screen (?!?!). Strange because scanning had already failed because of the error, but whatever. It appeared to have found a trojan, which is my first on the mac (congrats for me!). I did a full scan last night, and nothing was found, and no errors came up. Altogether: it seems to work now!

Re: El capitan

I have just tried again with download version 6.4f36 and everything works fine, updated then completed a quick scan followed by a full scan. No problem at all so far. Thank you everyone.

Support for OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) is imminent. Norton Security client release 6.4 has been published. Patchers for anyone running v 6.3 we expect to post a few days before the GA of El Capitan. Details here: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/product-update-norton-security-su...

Maybe now so of this popup/locked pages crap will stop!

Re: El capitan

The above fix might work if I could download the Norton Security client release 6.4.,  I removed all norton files using the "removeSymantecMacFiles" application, but am only able to download version 5.7 (43) when using the below posted link from gerry. (Thanks for working this issue)

The new client is already available in select channels. If you'd like to try it, you can download it from http://www.norton.com/setup

Re: El capitan

I am having the same issue as Nils...Then LiveUpdate runs and tells me that my software is up to date, but when I try to do any type of scan I get "The scan failed because of a scan engine problem.  Run LiveUpdate to get the latest version." LiveUpdate is insisting that there isn't anything to update. I have completely removed all Norton files and tried to install again...same story.

What would you suggest?

Re: El capitan

I did a clean install of OS X El Capitan, removed all my Symantec files with the provided terminal-shell, tried to install from disk .dmg and from Norton Management Installer... I'm out of ammo! Please help us! thank you in advance! P.S.: maybe this is stil a compatible problem? / maybe because of other software that makes a conflict during the install? all help is welcome!

Re: El capitan

Not for me...shows over 2GB of updates and fails to install them every time. Wont update on a clean install of OS X either...

Re: El capitan

This fixed my problem completely, after running the LiveUpdate, because the scan engine won't load before the LiveUpdate (only 220 MB updates)...
