was working in Outlook Express (WinXP), norton 360 came up, said something about email (want it to do something - senior brain burp), I clicked ok, it did it quick, then I see there are NO folders except default in my Outlook Express!!  Where did they go?

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

While waiting for a more specific reply could you look in History / Recent events and in Quarantine and see if there's anything listed there that might be relevant.

Would you just confirm the Verison ID of your Norotn 360 -- it's under Support / About in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

I'm not in N360 so I can't give exact directions but is there a History link on the main GUI? If so then there should be a drop list with all the categories you can select to examine.

If not and nonone here says where then try HELP ......

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

Sorry -- GUI = Graphical User Interface. In other words the screen it puts up that you work in; the "front page".

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

I'm sorry Hugh, I must be dense tonight, if you are referring to the gui of Norton, then no, there is no "history", if you are referring to Outlook express, there isn't one there either.  I'm lost................thanks

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

I hope someone else can chime in on this since I don't have N360 on any of my PCs at the moment. But there must be some way of getting at the list of actions it has taken recently to protect you ....

I've asked for help ....

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

On the top of the main screen click "tasks"

On the next screen, on the left said click "Check Security History"

On the next screen, change the box on top to "Quarantine".

Then you should see the list of Quarentined items

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

Outlook Express folders are each contained in a file with a .dbx extention.   The "inbox" and all the mail inside it will be contained in a file called inbox.dbx.  Same as for custom folders.  If I make a folder called Dave it will generate a file called dave.dbx that holds all the mail in that folder.

In addition to all the folder files, there is another one called folder.dbx that contains the index of all these files and folders.

It's the most important one when it comes to displaying and restoring outlook express files.

Look under the Quarantine list for any file ending in .dbx

Click it one time to highlight it and then click "more details" on the bottom right.

That should bring up a screen like this:

Click the bottom where it says "Options"

I was using a test virus for these shots so I only get an option to restore it.

You should have an extra option that says something like "Restore and Exclude from Detections".

Best of luck,

Dave

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

You had a very good point. Not sure what happened to it?

But we also need to know if 360 was just installed or if it had been working a while.

Dave

Edit-

catsears, I think we might need a little more info before we proceed.  Look and see if any .dbx files are in the quarantine but don't restore anything just yet.  Let us know if you see any of those files, if you just installed 360 or had it working for a while and if you remember what the message was or if it it shown under the history.

I'll pass any suggestions or ideas on to Hugh.

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

Thanks everyone for jumping in -- I think OP said he had checked Quarantine but couldn't find out how to get to History / Recent ....

Please stay in this thread since working through me will be less helpful!

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

Thanks guys, the 360 has been installed and working for a quite awhile.    dont know what happened.  I've followed Dave and Hugh's advice - I dont have anything in "quarantine" except "Medium: inst.exe (WS.Reputation.1) detected by Download Insight - quarantined, saturday dec 18, 1020 4:03pm.

apparently that inst.exe (what is it) contained a threat that 360 picked up on.

but what I cant figure - is just the other day, my OE files were fine, something popped up from 360, asked if I wanted to do something, not thinking....clicked ok, and boom - the subfolders were gone!!!  I cant even remember what came up now, didn't think anything of it until my subfolders didn't show up in OE the next time.

weird!!  how about a backup copy from somehwere? can I restore them from something like that?

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

catsears,

I'm not using OE now that I'm on Windows 7 so I don't know about backups -- did you do a global search for *.dbx which should be any message files?

See if there are any other suggestions.

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

Hi catsears,

Do you have backups of your emails?  If so, you can rest a bit easier, as you can recover your data from the backups if all else fails.  If you use Norton 360 backup there is an option to backup emails.  Please check to see if the mailbox folders have been backed up.  Outlook Express .dbx files are notoriously fragile and it sounds like your folder system may have been corrupted.  Methods to recover lost folders and messages can carry their own risks of data loss, so having backups would be very reassuring.

Here is a Microsoft KB article that offers one thing you might try.  Again, it will be safer to try this if you have backups available, as Microsoft notes at the bottom of the page..

OLEXP: Folders Do Not Appear in the Local Folders List

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

thanks everyone, seems nothing is working!  I've lost some important emails.  I've tried everything.  Wish someone else could come up with some other ideas.  Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Email Folders DISAPPEARING

We can't suggest anything unless you give us more information.

Do you have any backups?

Where you running the 360 backup tool and was it set to backup emails?

If you search your system for *.dbx, do you find dbx files that match the names of the missing folders?

Dave
