Email Scam Quandary !

I'm am currently using a different PC, from what follows. I have an idea what's wrong; but, I need to confirm my methodology in the Norton Community.

I use web-mail exclusively, and I've got an email from myself, in my Spam Folder, that I didn't sent: I've had a couple previously. I regularly change my password; so, it's time to track down the problem. There're no other apparent problems.

I would be grateful if someone would list the current links to all the external scanner tools, suitable to get to the bottom of the problem: whatever is available, and how to set them up. So,that I can do a work through, and localize my problem.

CHEERS !

Hi Photo762

here is a link to Norton Power Eraser: http://uk.norton.com/support/DIY/

The tool pretty much explains itself, be cautious though- the tool may sometimes detect false positives.

My best advice would be to wait for Quads to respond, he has A LOT more knowledge and experience than most users on the Norton Community.

Please be aware that Quads will not help users who go against his instructions, if you go off  whilst he is helping you and try to solve this yourself he will stop helping you as other users have found out

Regards,

Re: Email Scam Quandary !

Hi photo762,

Are you getting messages from people in your contact list also complaining about spam coming from "you"?  If yes, then your online webmail account has probably been compromised and your address book harvested.  If no, then someone else's contact list (with your address in it) has likely been harvested, and spammers have chosen your address to put in the "From" field of the messages they are sending in order to obscure the true source of the spam - a trick known as email address spoofing.

In either case, you should know that the spam is probably being sent from other accounts controlled by the spammers, and not from your account.  Also, since this is webmail, if your account was compromised, it is very, very unlikely that there is any malware involved, and so scanning your computer will probably find nothing.  If you suspect that your account was hacked, please follow the steps in the article below to secure you account.  Otherwise, there is nothing you can do except wait for the spammers to move on to using addresses other than yours.  This really does sound like a case of address spoofing, so you would just be wasting your time running multiple scans, since neither your account nor your computer would be involved in any way.  Run one or two scans, and if they report no problems, you can trust those results.

I have asked people in my contacts to let me know if they're getting spam email from me. I have asked them, and the current answer is "NO", for the couple of occasions I've seen.

Until I read your post, I was unaware that scammers could "spoof email" an ID; you live and learn.

Thanks for your help, keep the info coming.

Re: Email Scam Quandary !

Spoofing is pretty common.  Usually, the spammers will abandon one address for another fairly quickly.
