Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

I haven't been able to insert images in any of my posts today (30-Jan-2017).  When I click the IMCE (insert image) button on the toolbar of the editor, the opened window shows "waiting for community.norton.com..." in the bottom left of the status bar, and the following error is always displayed after about a minute or so:  "Error 503 first byte timeout".

I was able to insert an image in a thread <here> in the NIS/N360/NAV board this morning (04-Feb-2017).  Is bug officially resolved?

Re: Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

Hello

I never had the issue of not being able to post an image, but I was having the issue of having the white board and taking a very long time to populate. I just tried it now and it opened up right away to my board with all my existing files.

I would say it's fixed, but as already mentioned, it is still the weekend, so no official announcement yet.

Thanks.

Hi floplot:

When you browse to CeeBee's original post of 28-Jan-2017 in the thread LU Definition Updates fails for NAV 21.7.0.11, are you able to view the image that shows both Virus Definitions and IPS Definitions failing during LiveUpdates?

I used to be able to see this image, but I noticed yesterday that the image was displayed as a broken placeholder.  I can't tell if the link for this recent image is broken (and whether the problem was caused when Norton "fixed" the IMCE) or if we're having a repeat of the old issue discussed in the thread Images in Moderation Since 16-Oct-2014 where users with Guru permissions were the only ones able to see some of the images posted by non-Gurus in the forum.

...and just an aside, but is there an alternate method for inserting an image in a post without using the image upload (IMCE ) button in the toolbar that works for both Gurus and non-Gurus?  I know that Gurus don't have to wait for images stuck in the moderation queue to be approved by a Norton employee before they can be viewed, but are Gurus also allowed to copy and paste images directly into the editor?

FWIW ~ all I see is the placeholder, same as I would see after deleting an image from my IMCE repository.   Images are not locked after Edit time, like text, as you know.
I suspect CeeBee deleted image from CeeBee's IMCE repository. YMMV

Here's a test

I forgot to check but attach does not include jpg but what if I zip it first?

Well that works for zip but a bit tedious .... and depends on upload working I guess.

Is it possible the 'broken' image was deleted from CeeBee's stored images?  So now it only shows a place holder where the image was?

Re: Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

This issue is mostly resolved. We made some improvements that cuts down the IMCE popup load time dramatically, which I'm sure you all have noticed. That said, we are continuing to improve the image upload performance to make sure this doesn't happen again. Thanks for your patience with this situation.

Re: Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

Hi Tony_Weiss:

I'm not getting an Error 503 today, but inserting images with the IMCE is much slower than it was last week.  It took about one minute for the Window to populate the my list of stored images this morning, and another minute or so for the Upload button to upload the image from my computer.

That was then but since then it has changed so maybe the green flag needs to be removed? Although I'm sure it will improve again soon ....

But definitely not yet as you can see <g>

I counted 15 seconds before the IMCE window rendered. Is that about what you're seeing?

Hi Tony:

I just posted an image <here> in the test thread and it took about 30 - 35 sec for the IMCE window to populate using my default Firefox v51.0.1 browser.  It also took about the same amount of time for the image to upload from my computer once I had browsed to the file and started the upload.  I logged out of the forum and logged back in using my IE9 browser, and times for a second test image <here> were in the same range - about 35 - 40 sec each for both the window rendering and file upload.

That's a bit faster that yesterday, but much slower than last week.  I used the IMCE a few times after your 06-Feb-2017 update <here> in this thread update and the window rendering and file uploads were only taking about 5 sec.

I'm located in Manitoba, Canada.

Re: Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

Hi Tony_Weiss:

I had another "Error 503 first byte timeout" this morning (Details: cache-ord1735-ORD 1487787197 4174737124) this morning that appeared 60 sec after I clicked the IMCE button to try and view my list of uploaded images, so I've removed the Solved status for this thread.

Re: Error 503 First Byte Timeout When Inserting Images

Hi Tony:

I tried to upload and insert image named Vista SP2 BITS Service Started.png today.

There was no problem the first time I tried to use the IMCE - the window rendering and upload from my computer each took about 4 or 5 secs and the image posted normally - see <here>.

However I noticed something odd with the image filename after it was uploaded.  Unlike previous images I've uploaded, the UNC file path for this latest image substitutes the standard "%20" for spaces in the filename (i.e., the image is named Vista%20SP2%20BITS%20Service%20Started.png on your server).  When I try to reuse that stored image in a new reply I get a broken placeholder for the image - see <here>.

I too saw the %20 inserted into a file name when I uploaded a file a few days ago. But looking back on my recently uploaded files, the %20 has been replaced with a real space.

Maybe this has something to do with the new caching that has been implemented.

Hi Tony:

Thanks for the update.  I can confirm that I'm not getting any more "%20"s substituted for spaces in the filenames of images uploaded with the IMCE, and re-using uploaded images no longer results in a broken placeholder in a post.  Here's an example of an image named NIS v22_9_1 PE cltlmh_exe Suspended 08 Apr 2017.png that I originally uploaded and inserted on 09-Apr-2017 in bcrown's thread Norton causing Explorer.exe to freeze in Win XP that I was able to re-use today:

I'll mark this thread as solved unless someone else reports that they're still having problems re-using uploaded images.
