error 8921, 254

been trying to get help with this issue for awhile now all I get is hung up on when I call, excuses and my time wasted they fail to help or answer a simple question ( 2 supervisors hung up on me this morning not first time they did)

there chat support only get there scripted non answers

atleast weekly ( twice this week) I get a error 8921, 254

other day I had a failed update several times even after restart ( reboot)

gain get no help from Norton in chat support

last night I had a rarity someone actually went off script!

they stated its a "known issue" and than said its being fixed ( alledgedly)

than server minutes later claimed its not Nortons problem ( as said to me on the phone several times )

so who else do I contact for Norton issues? my car company??? really???

amazes me the ignorance of some

one so called fix given in the beginning was to do a reinstall, really???? that doesn't fix the issue nor should I be reinstalling weekly ??? oh wait that's normal?? sure if you like defective things

all signs seem to point to the server ( makes most sense) but yet its not there server to fix?

I did the diagnostic test ( scan ) all good

I have windows 8.1

as I stated the restart ( reboot) in the page I know about and doesn't seem to fix or do anything regarding the issue

I appreciate your help

not a every day thing but pops up weekly if not more

I think most 99% of people restart there computers daily if not more hmmmm

I only have Norton open when doing updates

did a reinstall just this morning hoping maybe that will fix the issue

installs and starts click on live update and get error 8921, 254 again!

auto fix doesn't find any issue as usual when this happens

One way to ensure a full restart is accomplished is to right click on the Start Button and choose Restart. This will do a complete shutdown and then a fresh restart of the operating system. 

as stated several times already I reboot/restart after updates

we clear on this??

Please try using the NRNR in remove only, restart. Now instead of going to mynortonaccount to reinstall, please try this. You haven't mentioned your Norton program, so I will have to list them all and you pick the correct link to use.

Please remember to run Live Update until no more, restarting as necessary.. Some updates require more than 1 restart. The version in yout Norton Account may have become corrupted.

As floplot suggested, please try reinstalling Norton Security Download Link ( www.norton.com/latestns  ) and activate with existing Norton Subscription. If issue reoccurs please provide below information for further investigation. 

Also, i have sent you a private message requesting logs for further investigation. 

- Is this issue started happening for the first time or occurred before? 

- Do you have any other computer having Norton installed in the same network and working fine?

- Any hardware changes like router/modem reconfiguration?

- Do you have any other Security product installed along with Norton?

You can run it or save it.  You use that file for a direct install - to be on the safe side be sure you have your product key handy.

why would I need my product key it should be on my account already ( assume it is) and if its a reinstall than I would just log into it after it is done seems to me

is this a buy Norton link or an actual reinstall option?

It is a link that can be used for a reinstall and as I said "to be on the safe side be sure you have your product key handy.".   It states BUY because the link is maintained/kept current in the Norton Store.

Thanks for the images - is the Norton IPS Definitions the only update that failed?  I ask as there were 4 updates, not all completed, but we can't see the status of the 4th update in your image.  When LU fails - is it always the IPS defs or do others fail?  If others, which ones?

Normally if something like this happens, a rerun of a manual LiveUpdate at a later time will pull the update that failed in.  I usually run a manual LiveUpdate right after I notice a fail and if no joy - then I'll wait (sometimes up to 24 hours) to try it and eventually the failed update will be pulled in.

Do you now see where I got that the Norton IPS Definitions Failed?  I asked if others failed, because there is additional info that could show when you use the scroll bar.

9wood. It appears that the fast startup issue is the part you're not willing to understand. Allow me to explain. The errors you are getting are caused DIRECTLY from fast startup. Having that enabled keeps system files retained in memory and doesn't FULLY allow your OS to do a clean and complete shut down. This not only affects Norton but other software as well. Please perform the disable and reboot your system. Many users have and have had this issue beginning with your OS, Windows 8.1, which have been solved here by disabling fast startup.

Hello awood

I'll try once more. The links I provided above in my first link are for reinstalling the program you have. It is supposed to give you the latest version of your program. Since you have mentioned Norton Security after I made my post, you can use the first link.  I suggested this link because it is an alternative link from the one in your Norton Account which can be used. I tried to avoid the failure from occurring again.. We have been trying to find out if it is always the same file that has failed.

You do not have to pay again for your product again. When you click on my link, it brings you to your download site and it will give you the program again which is what you have to do. Please remember the first step was to delete your program, so you have to reinstall a fresh clean program. Doing it this way gives you a cleaner process of deleing and installing the same program, but it's like you installed it for the first time except you don't have to pay for it again.

If it is the same IPS file that is failing, you don't have a failure of the whole program failing, rather you have a failure of 1 file which will fix itself most of the time.

I hope you won't feel insulted by me trying to explain what we have been trying to do. I certainly don't want to insult you or make you feel like you can't read or understand.

Please remember we can not see your computer, nor do we access your computer. The only one of us that is a Symantec Employee is Sunil. All the others who have tried to help you are Gurus. They are Norton customers like you are who volunteer their time to try and help other customers with their Norton products. I try to do the exact same thing as the Gurus try to do. The servers may be at fault, but the only way to find out is by what you try to do and also do what Sunil has asked especially if he has asked for logs. That's the real way of finding out just what is causing the issue. No one here is trying to insult you.. I know too long of a post, but I have tried to explain some things.

as I stated I have done a reinstall several times the last was Monday I believe

so I know how to , don't get unlimited downloads tho with Norton so that's a concern

as for the server it seems to be the issue ( rather obvious) connecting to server error?

no problems with my connection or using any site etc...

main issue is the alledged support just get scripted replies no help, and refusal to answer a simple valid question

many many hang ups which includes several supervisors

not like i'm asking them to do my taxes and builed me a house know what i'm saying?

and according to some at Norton support the server or the program(s) themselves are theres to fix?

find that rather rediculous

whats the point of the phone and chat support when all you get is bots who read scripts

Can I suggest one more thing to try?  Have you tried changing your DNS settings temporarily just to rule that out as a factor?

I been around computers 17 years and I happen to know a Microsoft programmer ( 98- thru windows 8)

so I think I know what i'm doing
