error reporting stopped error

For several days now, I've had a small Microsoft window which first appears minimized in on the taskbar.  When I click on it, it is a small window that states: "Symantec error reporting stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notifify you if a solution is available."  When I close it, it comes back shortly thereafter, even when the computer is idle.  I haven't been able to figure out how long it takes to come back or what might be bringing it back. I have rebooted but that hasn't changed anything.  I've also run a full NIS scan and also Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware.  I'm using NIS 2011.  My Windows version is Vista Home Premium SP2.

I can't believe this is actually a reliable, trustworthy error.  Can anyone help me figure out where and what this is?

Note that I'd like to attach a screen print of the error but can't see to attach it.  If there is a way, please let me know how.

robincb-

i think that this is a windows error reporting that will probably keep coming back up. you probably just need to delete the entry and it will stop bugging you.

i don't know for sure though but if you want to send a screen cap using the  icon in the toolbar for when you can compose a message then you can attach the pics.

Re: error reporting stopped error

I'm glad to know I'm not the only person with this problem.  Did it just start recently for you others?

What bothers me is why it is MS-Windows advising of this error.  Shouldn't it be NIS telling there is  problem?

What is meant by that the entry just needs to be deleted?

From where?

Here is the error window ....

Re: error reporting stopped error

thats not what i thought it was so deleting the entry wont help. i thought you were talking about the "problems and solutions" section. this is something completely different.

try going to support and then clicking on get support then click on "begin support session" and it'll check your nortons for any errors or problems and stuff.

does it find any problems?

Re: error reporting stopped error

I did the support session check for issues ... no problems.  I believe there may be a way to email Symantec/Norton.  If no answers here, I'll probably try to locate that.

open up nortons and clikc on history and then go to norton error reporting. what do you see in there? is anything not submitted?

Re: error reporting stopped error

I exported the full history in TXT format and opened it in Excel.  Interesting.  The last date of Norton Error Reporting activity was 1/19 which is the day this error message window started appearing.  Performance Alerts have also not occurred since then.  All other categories have had activity since then.

Re: error reporting stopped error

I forgot to reply to cgoldman's question about Ad-Aware ... yes, it is still installed.  It was not installed, though, until this past weekend when I began troubleshooting and also installed Malwarbytes.

Submitting seems to have stopped on 1/19/11--the date these error windows started.

Attached is the Full History that I exported which I edited a bit to make it small enough to attach.

I started seeing the pop up  the same day you made your first post, I have also been through the Norton history and don't see anything about error reporting had a problem.   I received the following Windows security update a few days before, I'm wondering if they had anything to do with it.

Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB2478935) Installation date: ‎1/‎13/‎2011 3:00 AM

TGH,

I have two updates also, but NIS error reporting was working after those but not since the errors started showing.

I received a notice that  my subscription would expire in 30 days and that is about the time this error showed up. In past years I have had funny things happen when they started sending these reminder messages and I get another message every day or two.  The last time I renewed early I lost the balance of my old  subscription, I think Norton should let customers take care of their subscriptions. I don't have a clue if this related but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Re: error reporting stopped error

I am having the exact same issue.  My Norton has 165 days left in subscription, so I don't think that's the issue.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

RobinCD/Whiplash

I went into Windows Event Viewer and found multiple errors like the one below that happened along  the approximate time line as the Windows error in question.  The errors began 1/19/2011and have continued up to today.  It is my opinion this is the problem and Norton is the only one that can correct it.  I don't have a clue how to get this information to Norton

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Application Error
Date:          1/19/2011 9:54:29 PM
Event ID:      1000
Task Category: (100)
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      Office-HP
Description:
Faulting application SymErr.exe, version 18.5.0.125, time stamp 0x4cf9dfd9, faulting module SymErr.exe, version 18.5.0.125, time stamp 0x4cf9dfd9, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0003ab10, process id 0x1848, application start time.

SymErr.exe is a Symantec Error Reporting process which belongs to Symantec Shared Component from Symantec Corporation.

Re: error reporting stopped error

Hello,

We need some more information to better assist in researching the cause of the issues you are experiencing.

If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7, perform these steps:

- Wait for Symantec Error Reporting to crash. Perform the next step once it crashes (but before it closes).

a) Launch Task Manager

b) Click on "Show Processes from All Users"
c) Right Click on each SymErr.exe process and click on Create Dump File

Once you have this file, send me a Private Message. Be sure to only create the dump file while the SymErr.exe process is crashed.

Re: error reporting stopped error

Tried to follow your direction to create the dump file. No symerr.exe entries were in my task manager listing. Yes, the app had crashed and the error window was still up. I did search NIS's history and found this

Re: error reporting stopped error

I am having the same error pop-up window and have the same items in the NAV history.  Only difference I see is that I am using NAV rather than NIS.  This started about the same time, too.  I am running on Vista.

Tim Lopez:

There isn't a SymErr in Task Manager.  Do you want information on the pop-up when it appears in Task Manager?

Re: error reporting stopped error

All,

Try these steps:

1) Run LiveUpdate to ensure that you have the latest updates.

2) Turn OFF the Norton Community Watch option in Miscellaneous Settings

3) Reboot

4) Re-enable Norton Community Watch

5) Reboot

Let me know if this helps!

Re: error reporting stopped error

Tim Lopez

I don"t think we can create a dump file while the symerr.exe is in failed mode, it seems that when you receive the Windows error it has already closed the program and does not show in the process window.

I have two machines running Windows XP and they have not been affected.  It appears from reading the feedback that it only affects machines running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.

The windows error seems to repeat its self four times daily, around 9:00 AM....Noon....3:00PM and 9:30PM daily give or take a few minutes.

The first instance showed up on the my Advent Viewer on 1/19/2011   5:46 PM and that seems to coincide with the other reports

Thanks, Tim.  I followed the steps complete with two reboots and I haven't had the error window pop-up since.  That has been over 7 hours ago.  Tomorrow will be the proof.

Re: error reporting stopped error

I'm willing to say it is fixed.  Still no "error reporting stopped" pop-ups as of this morning.  Been clear for 18 hours.

Thanks again.

Tim Lopez,

That seems to have fixed the problem for me too.  I haven't had the error window since following your steps yesterday evening.

Thanks for taking part in this Community.  It's good to see a Community provided by the program manufacturer.
