Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Every time Norton does an update with a patch I get an error message that there is an error. If I contact Norton they tell me i have to uninstall and reinstall Norton which requires restarting my computer. there is a windows update that I have been told not to install so I don't want to restart my computer. for the past several months every time Norton issues a patch I have to uninstall the program why is that?

I think you have answered your own question.  Windows machines need restarting often for many reasons, Norton being only one.

There are ways to avoid certain Windows updates.  Perhaps we can help you with that.

I should not continually have to uninstall Norton every time they do a patch to be able to do the patch, that's my point

You shouldn't!  I have better success when I choose to Apply Later, then restart my machine.  Avoiding Windows updates isn't really a valid reason not to restart... But I can't change your mind, so hopefully someone else can offer a better solution.

Best of luck.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

If I restart my computer then I will get the update from Windows my computer people are telling me not to install the latest update at this time. My point is EVERYTIME norton issues a patch I have to contact them with the error message and I have to have them uninstall Norton and reinstall then restart my computer. Seems to me Norton needs to fix that

But there are ways to avoid Windows Updates.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window

This should stop the update, even though it mentions drivers.

This does NOT answer my question. My question is why every time Norton sends a patch I have to uninstall and reinstall Norton?

Then I will leave for someone else to offer their thoughts.

Good luck.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Someone here suggested doing the update and if I got the message that there was an error to chose apply patch later, and restart the computer, that worked. I contacted Norton to explain my issue and he looked at my computer and said all the settings were fine and it shouldn't happen again blamed Win updates! Well then Norton needs to find out why the updates are causing issues with Windows IMHO! My computer techs told me not to install the latest win updates as they are causing problems! BTW not Norton just problems

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Hello

A windows computer should be restarted once a day to clear out the memory of the computer. If you are using Windows 8 or higher, you should turn off Fast Startup. If you haven't restarted your computer for months, then you haven't installed any windows updates, not just the one you don't want. That also means that you haven't done any updates on your computer. A restart is needed so that the update gets applied to files in use while the computer is turned on. If you uninstall any program, you would need to restart your computer. A restart is also needed to make sure you have all the updates when you use Live Update. The issue you are experiencing is because you don't want to learn how to change your Windows Update to skip a certain Windows Update, not all of them.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Hi

I have a computer tech who watches out for me, I have turned off my computer and I have gotten updates. It's just the latest one that asks before it updates. I was under the wrong impression that if I restarted my computer this update would be applied and I thankfully was wrong. I told me tech my issue with Norton and he said restart and the update wasn't applied. Win 10 has had a lot of problems with updates and since I have used these techs for over 15 years I trust what they tell me. So I did restart and Norton is fixed and it did not install the latest update. I usually restart once per week which is what my tech told me to do but thank you for responding to me I appreciate it.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Hello

With Norton patches, it usually requires more than 1 restart. After the first restart, then run Live Update again and check for any other updates. With the latest Norton Update, I had to do 3 restarts I think before the Norton Update was completely installed. I checked Live Update after the restarts and their were more updates to get that were part of the Norton Update. There were 2 different patches to update. As Krusty has suggested, I too choose to Apply patches Later. I can then close programs at my leisure.

Thanks.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

That is what I did. With previous versions of Windows this was never necessary, one time to restart and done. Norton should fix that but guessing they won't! Thanks Have a good night Happy New Year

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

Some software updates, not just Norton, need to deliver some updates in stages. The first files that get updated are pre requisites for a subsequent update. That is just the way that some Windows software gets updated.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Every time Norton does a Patch I have to uninstall and reinstall

I keep having the problem with just Norton Patch updates. IN speaking with Norton Techs the other day he assured me he fixed the problem so I won't know anything until they do another patch. All other updates go right through! I was afraid that restarting my computer would install the latest Win update which my computer techs told me to keep checking remind me later not to do it yet. Thanks and Happy New Year
