Excessive CPU on Macbook Pro (Intel)

Every now and then goes crazy and starts consuming 200%+ of CPU, making the machine hot and fans run flat out. Only way to sort this is to kill the process in Activity Monitor. It immediately gets recreated, but runs far more gently and doesn't cause any problems.

This has been going on for some time, years even. Now that MS Defender is getting such high scores, I am debating whether I need N360 any more, especially as there have been so many ongoing problems with Macs. Getting hard to justify the additional expenditure...

All apps & OS are fully updated. Any thoughts?
