Existing DNS issue resurfaced - WiFi Internet connection to safe websites blocked by Norton Core

This is an issue that plagued the Norton Core for several months last year - where Internet connection to several known safe websites was being blocked by Norton Core on my phone, and if WiFi was disabled, the connection was available to these websites.

The issue lies with  the DNS settings of the Norton Core: if you keep the DNS setting to "Norton Secure DNS", then it blocks known safe websites (like local public libraries, Wikipedia).

If I switch the DNS settings to "ISP's DNS", then the Internet over WiFi works as it should.

Norton/Symantec struggled with this issue for several months last year, until they finally put in a fix. Looks like that fix has been "unfixed" now.

Everybody you haven't mentioned what parental settings you may or may not have. If set what categories are set. I have used Norton secure DNS since January without issue. If Core blocks a website its usually due to invalid certificate signatures on the site. Your ISP DNS setting may not be as rigid as Norton as well. If you'd post a screenshot of what you are seeing we can then see what you are seeing and what sites are being blocked. Here is how to post a screenshot.

Meanwhile you can submit the site(s) URL's to BlueCoat for review. Core utilizes this service. I had asked months ago for Symantec to clarify what the issues are between safeweb and bluecoat conflicts. No reply as of this posting.

Once again this raises the question of whether NTT/ Level 3 DNS offers the services supposedly provided by Norton Secure DNS. Neustar seemed to (and we're paying for those services) - but Neustar also seems to have caused the DNS debacle.

So, are NTT/Level 3 any better than an IPS' DNS (except for reliability)? Who knows?

@SoulAsylum

No Parental Settings are set.

Among the websites being blocked by Norton Secure DNS were high-profile URLs like Wikipedia.

In order to take screenshots, I changed the settings back to NSD from the ISP. Right now, it seems to be working again. Perhaps a temporary glitch in Norton's DNS service that coincided with me checking these websites. I'll leave this open for a couple of days, and if I don't see it again, I'll mark it as resolved.

I just ran a DNS check and see two Verizon and one NTT servers.

71.242.0.224 none Verizon Internet Services United States

71.242.0.212 none Verizon Internet Services United States

165.254.102.79 none NTT America United States

And a DNS leak test at 7:47am AZ time shows 2 Level 3 servers. What is going on? Seems to be no consistency in what is supposed to be "Norton Secure DNS".

Re: Existing DNS issue resurfaced - WiFi Internet connection to safe websites blocked by Norton Core

everybody & garlen. Feedback from my contact states a fresh ticket has been created for the dev team to look into the DNS issue once again. In the mean time, would you both shake your phones and create logs. In the comments field please add: your forums username>the link to this forums thread>add your core serial number and describe what you are having the issue with. Further please send a PM here on the forums to Gayathri_R and also give her your core serial number so she may look for the logs and tie the correct ones to you. Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Re: Existing DNS issue resurfaced - WiFi Internet connection to safe websites blocked by Norton Core

SoulAsylum - the logs won't show anything that DNS leak test doesn't. The Admins can check the DNS provided under the "Norton Secure DNS" option as easily as we can. I'm not having any problems, my Core is running fine and has been for months.

My point is that nobody from Norton seems to be able to tell us if the NTT/Level 3/Verizon/etc. DNS that we see provides the services that "Norton Secure DNS" is supposed to.

If not, I would argue that we deserve a 1/3 discount as the solution sold to us is supposed to include Norton Secure DNS, Norton Core, and Norton endpoint (Desktop/mobile) and, apparently, the first third of the solution may be missing.

This is a simple question with a simple answer from Norton, not an issue requiring logs - at least not from me.

Thanks!

Re: Existing DNS issue resurfaced - WiFi Internet connection to safe websites blocked by Norton Core

 Gayathri,

"Norton DNS provides content-filtering policies that help block unsafe, fraudulent, and phishing websites from entering your protected network." This is in the 1.30 Android app as the description for "Norton (Defalut)" and, in my opinion, are the services that it's fair and reasonable for Core users to expect if we pick this option.

Regardless of which DNS services Norton/Symantec choose to use (and I don't care, it's your decision how you deliver the services we pay for) it's fair and reasonable to expect that (except for downtime and outages) we receive 100% of the described and implicitly promised/paid for services 100% of the time.

Do the DNS services, alone and in combination, provided by the Norton/Symantec Core under the "Norton Secure DNS (Recommended)" option (which seem to be, at a minimum, Level 3, NTT, and Verizon but may include others) in the management app provide 100% of these services 100% of the time (except for downtime and outages)?

We early adopters/unpaid beta testers deserve an answer. Yes or no?

How would I do that? I don't have an address or contact point for Gayarthri_R.

Look for this at the top of any forums page where there is a thread active.

Click inbox, then "write a new message". Type in the name of the user and it will appear in the white box. Just make sure its the correct one.
