Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Hi all,

Trying to use recovery/performance tools of NU 16 (up to date).  I get the message "Unable to initialise Disk Doctor Engine!" when I hit "Repair drives".  If I hit "Defragment Disks" I get "Failed to initialise Speed Disk Engine".

Other than reinstalling NU, any ideas, please?

Ian

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Sorry for late reply. I was hoping someone with more experience with NU would chime in.

First thought/question. Are you using Win 8 or 10? If so, have you turned off the Fast Startup feature?

If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Hi Peter,

Thanks for having a look.  No, I'm using boring old Windows 7.  The immediate problem's gone away, so I can do a reinstall of NU when I get a minute.

The problem that caused me to use NU was on the laptop.  On a couple of occasions early this week, the laptop ground to a halt whilst using Firefox, when nothing else would run, the CPU showing 100% activity but no program running.  Running NU Registry Clean gave relief for a short period before back to the problem, hence looking at other NU processes.

It's been fine since then and the issue coincided with BT and Plusnet having to apologise for broadband issues.  I can't see how this could affect the laptop in such a dramatic way, though.  I was unable to do a comparison with my PC at the time.

Thanks again,

Ian

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

If you have a Norton Anti virus product installed, many users were having a problem with high CPU usage from a recent Norton update. A hotfix was released a couple of days ago. If you have run LiveUpdate and restarted your computer that may have fixed the issue for you.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Hi again Peter,

That'll be it!  It's been OK since the patch was applied.  I still have my NU issues but they're not preventing me working, so we can call this thread "solved".

Thanks again,

Ian

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

If you don't mind, I would respectfully ask you unmark the solution. The reason I ask this is that there has not been a solution to the NU issues you note in your OP. When users search, they will see that there is a solution, when in fact there is not. Also, a solved thread does not attract potential helpers to look into the problem.

We still need to try to find the problem with your Disk Doctor issues.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Fair point, Peter.  I don't have access to my NU install disk at the moment, so will see if I can download it from the Download site and check again.  Meanwhile, if I can find the right button, I'll cancel the "Solved" status.

EDIT:  I found my subscription on the Symantec site but it appears I have to pay £10 to download it.  I can't remember this being the case when I reinstalled it last time.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

You can get the download from here. As long as you have access to your product key.....

EDIT

Before you nuke your existing installation, go to Help - About. That will show your activation code. Copy or print that before you start to reinstall.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Thanks Peter,

Download and reinstall OK.  I'd made a note of the product key, but wasn't asked for it.  Seems to be working OK now.  Can we close this thread now?

Good to hear things are working again.

Can we close this thread now?

I would say that if the reinstall resolved the issues in your first post, you should mark your last post as the solution.

Re: Faled to initialise disk doctor engine

Hi Peter,

I don't know why it became faulty in the first place, but yes, the reinstall appears to have sorted the reported problem, so OK to call it solved.

Thanks again,

Ian

Edit: I see I misspelled "failed" in the title - can it be corrected?
