Farelam.online virus exists on phone but NMS scans don't detect it

Hello:

I have experienced ten or so times when Farelam.online takes control of my Samsung Galaxy S6 android phone internet browsing sessions and it is a bear to get away from it.  Norton Mobile Security runs normally and scans each day; but, it never reports a problem.  It says "No Malware Detected."  Is there a setting or something that I need to change in NMS in order to get it to find and deal with the virus?

Thank you, Dale

It looks like you have picked up a PUA, a Possibly Unwanted App. While they are annoying, they do not cause damage to your system. Some people actually want the 'Features' offered by these programs. They are usually downloaded alongside a legitimate download when you do not uncheck the option for the additional download.

Norton products concentrate on malware that can damage your system, that is why some PUAs are not detected.

I would suggest a second opinion scan using the FREE version of Malwarebytes. MBAM is more aggressive about flagging PUAs. You can find it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.malwarebytes.antimalware

If that does not solve your issue, it may be malicious ads on some web sites you are visiting that redirect your browser. First I would clear the app data for your browser in Android Settings - Apps.

Then install an ad blocker for your browser. Have a look at AdBlock Plus for Samsung. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adblockplus.adblockplu...

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

MBAM is a good suggestion, PeterWeb.  I already use it on my laptop and didn't think about it on the phone.

I appreciate the suggestions.

Hello.  I installed MBAM for Android and have done two scans and enabled several security options; however, it hasn't flagged Farelam.online as being present or a problem yet.

It didn't find any other problems on the phone either.

I'll keep scanning and watching to see if Farelam grabs my browser again.

If it happens again, take note of the web site you are viewing. Then if you have not already done so, try adding an ad blocker as I suggested above. If it is malicious ads redirecting the browser, there is nothing on your device for Norton or MBAM to find. Then try that same web site again.
