File Insight trashed my software

I'm an independent software developer.  I'm in the process of deploying a Beta version of my software.  Today, I built a new version, updated my installer only to have Norton remove several installed files that it thought were Heur.AdvML.B threats.  I tried to restore the removed files, but, I got stuck in an endless loop where the restore asks for a restore folder.

I've read posts from others complaining of the same thing.  Can someone get me out of this Hell?

Re: File Insight trashed my software

Were you trying to restore to the same location or a different folder? Was there any error message, or did nothing appear to happen?

Once you get it back, or maybe before, what developers need to do is create a folder to store all their development projects, then configure Norton to stop scanning that folder.

Go to Norton Settings - AntiVirus, click on the Scans and Risks tab. Then click on configure beside the two items in the image below and exclude your development folder.

Re: File Insight trashed my software

Peterweb,

Thanks for the reply.  However, after closer inspection, I found that Norton did not remove source files.  It actually remove an installed version of my Beta.  It removed every trace of the software including install folder, executable, registry entries, etc.  This seems to be overkill and a false positive.

I have, however, taken your suggestion to protect my source folders.

Re: File Insight trashed my software

If you are having a specific detection for your program, and you are using a test bed machine, as I'm sure all software developers do  (  ), you can go one step further and configure Signatures to Exclude from All Detections. That is the next setting under the ones I noted. When you click Configure, it will seem like nothing is happening but it can take quite a long time to populate the signatures. You can exclude the one that is troubling your project. But remember if you actually contract something on your computer that is infected with that signature, it too will not be detected.
