File Shredder doesn't shred

I am using File Shredder from Norton Utilities Premium v21.4.4.356, gifted to me as I have Norton 360. I am running Windows 10 Pro.

I created a .ico file for use in a desktop shortcut. Having inserted the file image in the shortcut, I sent the file to File Shredder. When I click Shred, nothing happens (apart from an audio complaint). If I click Restore, I am told that the file is in use (see attached screen shot). I have deleted the shortcut and rebooted, but still no success. I have uninstalled and reinstalled NUP and FS, but still no success. What can I do please?

Thanks, John

Re: File Shredder doesn't shred

Problem solved (but not by me). File Shredder has now managed to blitz the offending .ico file. I didn't do anything, it just happened this morning when I booted up. I'm guessing that Windows was a bit slow to release the file from its 'files in use' list. Thanks to those who thought about the problem/replied.

Re: File Shredder doesn't shred

My programming information is way outdated, but from what I can remember, you need to have that .ico file available for it to be used.

Did you actually embed the code for the .ico file into the code for a shortcut, or did you link to the .ico file? If a link, you need a copy of that file stored somewhere for access.

Be sure you are trying to delete the file from the folder that you were using for development of that file, and not from where you need to use it.

Re: File Shredder doesn't shred

Thanks for replying peterweb, much appreciated.

I used the Windows desktop's Properties > Change Icon; not sure if that embeds or links. Either way, I don't need the shortcut or the .ico file any more, so I deleted them and rebooted. I also did a search of the HDD for any instances of the file and deleted references in Recents. But File Shredder still shows the .ico file.

As for deleting the file from the folder that I was using for its development, as far as I know the file no longer exists except as a ghost within FS. Maybe FS has a hidden folder where it holds files pending shredding. Or maybe Windows keeps a list of open files but has failed to release the .ico file. I should add that FS handles the shredding of other files ok.

Any further input from fellow community members would be most welcome please. Thanks.
