Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

I have followed the instructions provided on both the Mozilla and Norton websites to update my Norton 360 after updating Firefox to version 24.  However, Firefox still crashes if I leave the NIS toolbar enabled...even with all of the version updates outlined in the article: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-24-and-Chrome-30-Support-for-Norton-Toolbar/td-p/1022717

I am on a PC running 64-bit Windows7 and Norton 360.

I didnt think norton toolbar  was the culprit. I thought it was something else. Had to go back to FF 23 to stop it from crashing so bad. tried to google this and all the posts were old

Same here. As soon as I downloaded Firefox 24, it crashed three times. I'm back to V 23.0.1, as I prefer to retain the advantages of a working toolbar, and nil problems......

Hi  stw203,

You mention you did the update to N 360 after updating firefox.  The normal recommended process is to receive the NTB FF updates from Norton and after they have been installed - to go ahead and download the newest FF version.  we have seen situations in the past where upgrading FF prior to having the add-ons updated in Norton have caused problems.

FWIW, I have updated my Norton Security Suite (a clone of N 360) with the NTB Add-ons and with FF 24 and see no situations - however, NSS is still on version 20.4.0.40 and not on v 21.0.10.3.  Can we assumeyou are on version 21?

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

The latest patch from Norton to upgrade its toolbar causes Firefox to crash repeatedly. By disabling this addon, the problem has been solved.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Which order did you update the two programs? It is advised to be sure Norton has the FF toolbar update before allowing FF to upgrade.

Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your Norton installation and fix what it finds.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

The Norton patch was installed about two days before Firefox 24. I should mention that I had this happen in Google Chrome. I'll try auto fix. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Autofix did not correct the issue. This happened on two different computers. I wonder if it can be reproduced by others.

Same here.

Just upgraded today to the newest version of NIS, upgraded Firefox to version 24 yesterday, still crashes on a regular basis...

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reporting this issue. We need some details to help nail down this issue. Please post the following information when reporting this issue:

- The order of events for installing products. For example: Had N360 v20.4 installed, updated to v21.0.1.3, then updated to Firefox 24, then ran LiveUpdate to get Norton Toolbar v2014.5.1.4

- Confirm the version of the toolbar you are running. You can find this in the Firefox Add-ons.

- the steps you took when this crash occurred. For example: After updating to FF24, I launched FF, the toolbar was disabled, I went to the Addons and enabled it, and FF crashed.

- If there are error messages, please include them. If there aren't error messages, please describe exactly what happens. Does the product shut down completely? Does it freeze?

- What indications do you have that the Toolbar is the cause? Is it the correlation between the recent patch to v2014.5.1.4?

With this information, we can better understand the issue. Thanks.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Hi All,

I just upgraded Fiorefox to 24 and no signs of crashing etc - I am reposnding using FF 24 right now.

I installed the Browser Asdd-ons for FF 24 3 days ago when they first came out and have waited until FF 24 was offically released and just now updated via the Help > About  > Check for Updates and all appears to be running fine.

My add-ons had been updated 3 days ago and worked fine with FF23.0.1 and now FF 24.

Please let us know if you updated to FF 24 prior to downloading the Nroton add-ons.  If so there is a fix that has worked in the past if this is the case.

<edit>  Tony, this is not in answer to your request - I was typing it up while you posted.  Anything more you need from me - since I do not see the situation?

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Hi, I was at version 20.x of NIS, then upgraded to FF24. I constantly faced crashing, then I found this thread through google. Launched the check for a new version, then today upgraded tot version 21.X of NIS. Still crashes. However, when I disable the norton toolbar, it stops crashing, so definitely related to this addon. Version of toolbar in FF: 2014.5.1.4 (updated September 19, 2013).

Symptoms: no freezing, FF just crashes completely. No error message, nothing in Windows Event Viewer. I get the FF Crash Reporter with the option to send a crash report to mozilla. Then I have the option to restart FF, after which it reloads all the tabs that were open.

Also, it's not that it crashes immediately. It usually crashes after I have been running FF for let's say 15 minutes or something. And it doesn't crash on the same site/content every time. It could be on some site that uses flash (like youtube), it could be on a site like wikipedia that has just static content (text and images), ...

But if I disable the norton toolbar, I can use FF easily for more than an hour without any crashing...

FWIW, the patch you are talking about contained  "addional fixes( to solve some auto fill issue and bing annotation issue )".  So perhaps something else cause it besides the add-ons?

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great info. We're trying to eliminate some of the unknowns, one of which is the main cause of the crash. If you boot into SafeMode and launch Firefox 24, all of the Add-Ons will be disabled. If you could try this, and see if the crash still occurs, we can get a better idea of the cause. If the crash occurs without any toolbars/add-ons enabled, it's pretty clear as to the culprit. If it doesn't occur, it might be helpful to boot normally, disable all add-ons, and incrementally enable add-ons until the crash occurs. If anyone is willing to give that a try, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Tony,

The problem can be resolved by going into addons and disabling the toolbar, then rebotting. After the reboot, enable the addon.

Kudos0

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

I can confirm that the suggestion mentioned here above (disable addon, reboot, enable addon) is not the solution.

I tried this and just had another crash of FF after about 5 minutes of random browsing.

The only solution I have successfully tried untill now is disabling the addon.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

I agree with jefkebazaar.  I can consistently get the issue to happen or not just by enabling/disabling the two Norton addons:

Norton Toolbar 2014.5.5.4

Norton Vulnerability Protection 12.0.0.380 - 1

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

I have the impression it gets even worse. I'm trying to browse for the last hour with FF and addons enabled, now it crashes about every 5 minutes. Guys, not to complain, but it seams this is about the second time there are issues with the NIS addons for FF. I remember with version 23 that it took weeks and weeks to get this straightened out. Please tell me this is not again the road we are going to take here...

Hi all,

I know this won't help anyone here, but I thought I would share my experience with Norton 360v21 and Firefox 24.

I also received the Norton Toolbar patch a couple of days before upgrading Firefox to 24.  For me the upgrade went smoothly and so far I haven't had any crashes or other problems that many of you have had.  I've had the same smooth running on both of my systems.  I'm currently using Firefox to post this.

2 x Windows 7 x64 SP1

N360v21.0.1.3

Norton Toolbar 2014.5.1.4

Norton Vulnerability Protection 12.0.0.380-1

Can I ask what other extensions people are using, maybe a screenshot?

Here's mine.

Thanks.

I am experiencing this issue as well.

I recently upgraded to Norton Internet Security 20.4.0.40 on Sept. 16th, when it installed the new "Norton Browser Toolbar Add-on".  Then on Sept. 17th I believe Firefox 24 came out, and I updated.  Then every 5 minutes or so Firefox would crash.  Doesn't matter if I'm actively browsing, or if I'm just on a webpage (any webpage) and just looking at it.  Almost like clockwork, every 5 minutes or so, Firefox would crash.  When I disabled Norton Toolbar 2013.4.3.4 add-on, but kept Norton Vulnerability Protection 12.0.0.380-1 add-on enabled, I've been able to use my browser without crashing.

No problems with Firefox 23.

My system: Vista 64 bit

Hope this helps.

1 - I ran liveupdate immediately upon reaching my desktop as usual. I downloaded Firefox 24.0 from the direct link /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/win32/en-US The full exe not the stub version. After that I followed the instructions here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_firefox Restarted my PC. Installed Firefox 24.0 exe, set all of the options in Firefox, enabled Norton Toolbar and NVP. Restarted Firefox. Installed all of the add-ons I use. Restarting Firefox as required.

2 - 2014.5.1.4 with NVP 12.0.0.380 - 1

3 - This crash occurs 1 - 3 times per session. I generally let Firefox report the crash and click Restart Firefox. It keeps mentioning mswsock in the crash report.

4 - Firefox crashes and opens the crash reporter. I hit restart Firefox and it restores all of my open windows.

5 - I believe it's Norton Toolbar because the other add-ons I use never cause this issue. Also because none of the add-ons except Norton's were updated prior or after the release of Firefox 24.0

I read some people were having trouble with AMD graphics cards which caused Firefox to crash. But I don't have an AMD GPU.

I always do a clean installation of Firefox I never let it auto uppdate to a new version unless it's a decimal build like 23.0.1

There is no other explanation for these constant crashes. I haven't installed anything new recently. Except for NIS 21.x

Next time it crashes I will try and send the crash details to Tony_Weiss in a forum PM titled Firefox 24.0 crash details.

I thought I'd post a follow-up to my post (quoted above) as I may have found a solution to my crash problem.

When I update Firefox, I always do it from my Vista admin account, not my standard user account (Firefox doesn't let you update from within Firefox from a standard user account anyway).  This is always the way I've updated Firefox all the way from version 10 and up and never had a problem before now.

I remembered that when I updated from Firefox 23 to 24 using the built-in update feature in my Vista admin account (that I rarely use), that all went well, but when I logged into my standard user account (that I use all the time), and Firefox 24 scanned my plug-ins for compatibility, Firefox loaded and crashed shortly after that.  I thought perhaps there was a problem in the installation.

Here are the steps I have taken:

1. I downgraded to Firefox 23.0.1 by downloading it from this link and installing it overtop my Firefox 24 installation - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox

2. I restarted my computer

3. Used Firefox 23.0.1 in both admin and standard user accounts for a bit

4. Went back to my admin account and updated Firefox to version 24 again using the built-in update feature

5. Used Firefox in both admin and standard user accounts and noticed it wasn't crashing every 5 minutes.

I have had a crash after 38 minutes of use, and then a couple crashes after that on a particular website, but otherwise, things seem much more stable for me.

Hope this can somehow help others.

I have the same problem ie. FF24 crashes repeatedly UNLESS I disable Norton Toolbar ( 2014.5.1.4 )

It typically crashes 3 times/hr.

I have gone from Toolbar enabled to disabled & the crashing is ONLY when the Toolbar is enabled.

I have checked Live Update & everything is up to date.

I have run Autofix.

When it crashes I get the FF crash window.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

My work laptop (Windows 7 64 bit) started randomly crashing right after I updated to Firefox 24. I'm running the Norton Business Suite 20.4.0.40 with the Norton Toolbar 2013.4.3.4 and Norton Vulnerability Protection 12.0.0.380 -1 addons.

Crashes are random, but tend to come in waves. The longest I was up without crashing was about 8 hours. I originally thought it was Roboform since when I disabled Roboform the crashes stopped, but in my bug report to Mozilla they suggested Norton, so I reversed and enabled Roboform and disabled both Norton toolbars and so far I haven't crashed either.

That could suggest a compatibility problem between Roboform and Norton. I filed a bug report with Mozilla with links to crash reports - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=917792

I'll note that I have identity safe disabled.

My home PC, running Windows XP (32-bit) doesn't crash with Firefox 24.  It's running Roboform and Norton Internet Security 21.0.

Thanks Fred128. There have been a few other reports of crashes occuring without the Norton Toolbar enabled. If others who have seen the crash could give this a try -- to keep the toolbar disabled for a little bit to see if the crashes still occur -- we can get closer to the cause. Thanks again.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

I have to laugh, IE 10 crashing recently is the issue I am currently working on with a Symantec Employee.  What I have noticed so far: 1.) On a restart, everything will be fine.  2.) If the computer enters sleep mode and is woken up and you try to browse, that is when all manner of chaos breaks loose.  For example, Norton Toolbar will not load, additionally, the File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help options all vanish from IE 10.  If you attempt to go to a Website, everything hangs and Microsoft issues the typical, "We are searching for a solution...."  Bottom line, Norton add-ons have been temporarily disabled - - and the quest will continue tomorrow to determine if the situation is inherent with IE 10 or N360.  Given this thread however, where it seems as though other browsers are crashing as well, until Norton is disabled, I'm thinking the propensity lies with Norton.  It is interesting to note with this situation, duration.  For example, if my computer (with Norton fully enabled) only went into sleep mode for about five minutes and was woken up - - no problem.  However, I have documented that when the computer has been in sleep mode for hours upon hours - - then you awaken the system and attempt to browse the Internet, that is when everything goes bonkers!  I have to ask, could Norton have recently issued an update with respect to the toolbar which may be the root cause here?

Since moving to Firefox 24, it has crashed twice. Both times, it crashed while I had walked away and the computer was idle; I came back after a few minutes to a Firefox crash screen. Note that my computer is on (with Firefox running) and it is both active and idle for hours at a time over the course of as much as ten to twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Part of my normal PC start up and shut down process is to run a manual Live Update.

Running Win 7 Pro 64.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

Okay.  After hours of the computer being asleep (with Norton Add-ons still disabled) when the comp was awakened, Internet hung - - had to re-start.  At this point, I am tempted to completely uninstall N360 and see if that helps.  It is interesting to note, once Norton’s Add-ons were disabled, G-Mail attachments in IE 10 magically worked!  This is odd, because, I had turned off Norton’s toolbar (right-click) and put N360 in silent mode and it hadn’t worked.  I guess these things had to be “formally” turned off through inetcpl.cpl.  Overall, this is highly undesirable, as I hate to have to disable any security components just to get other things to work.  For now, I will not proceed further until the Norton/Symantec Employee I was working with contacts me back.

Best,

H.B.

Oddly enough this bug seems to have gone away and I didn't do anything to fix it. *knocks on wood*

Re: Firefox 24 released

Update, per my previous post. Now been running a fresh install of Firefox 24 for two days, and no crashes.

Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1 NIS V 21.0.1.3

I'd rather prevent it, than fix it !

I spoke too soon. I had four Firefox windows open and was using Google Maps and it crashed. Now I am trying with NTB disabled.

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled

By now, I've tried several options.

Today also installed firefox from scratch, after removing everything from the old install, including all folders, settings, ... in my local app data.

I had barely been using the reinstall of FF24 for 5 minutes when I already had a crash again.

For me, the only solution is still keeping the norton toolbar disabled.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
