Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

Win 8
Firefox 19.0.1
Norton 360 20.3.0.36

I somehow managed to get Norton Safe Search results when I type in my search terms into Firefox's address box. I want to get Google's search results.

On the Norton Identity Toolbar
 - Enable Norton Safe Web (unchecked)
 - Enable Norton Safe Search (unchecked)

Further to the left of the address box is Firefox's Search Box. On the Search Box Google is selected.

However, if I simply type my search terms into the Address Box, where the urls are shown, I get results by "nortonsafe.search.ask.com/web.....blah blah blah".

How do I replace Norton Safe Search with Google Search Results when typing search terms into the Address Box?

Re: Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

I am not sure of the proper solution. But I followed the advice in this following site to effect desired change:

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1109

Steps in Firefox:

1. In the address bar type: about:config

2. Clicked to "Promise to be careful."

3. A list of configuration items will display

    In the "Search" box type
    keyword.url

and the appropriate entry will display in the list

4. Replaced

http://nortonsafe.search.ask.com/web?o=APN10506&gct=kwd&qsrc=2869&l=dis&prt=360&chn=retail&geo=US&ver=20&q=

With

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=

5. Clicked OK

Here's another site that might be helpful:

Hi Stecyk,

To reset the Address Bar Keyword Search to use Google (the default) type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.  Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.  Scroll down the list to keyword.URL and right click the entry.  Select "reset" in the context menu.  Close the browser window and restart Firefox.  That should do it.

Hi,

Do you happen to be using Norton DNS settings on the affected computer?

Select "reset" in the context menu.  Close the browser window and restart Firefox.

I thought that it would too, but it didn't. When I reset in the context menu, the field was left blank. When it was blank and I restarted Firefox, I still had Norton Safe stuff. So I had to provide Google's specific data.

(see later post: 7 in this thread. I went back to reset. It didn't work.)

I doubt it, because I don't know what Norton DNS settings are. So unless Norton somehow changed these values, I don't think so.

Re: Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

SendOfJive, I went back and just hit reset. Again, I was back to Norton Safe Search. So I used your link to populate the blank field with the following:

https://www.google.com/search?q=

Somehow Norton managed to dig deeply into Firefox. So now, when you hit reset, it isn't reset back to its native condition. Is there a way I can remove Norton's code?

The reason I asked is because when I was using Norton DNS settings and searched from the Firefox Address bar it would search with Norton Safe Search.  I had to remember to search from the Search box.

Someone with an Admin account would need to change the settings manually, Norton would not change these settings.  Just as an FYI, you can read about what is now called Norton ConnectSafe here, but you should should get your problem sorted before considering making these changes.

It's just me, myself, and I that use my new computer. And I know I did not make any changes.

Somewhere, somehow, Norton has created a new default so that when "reset" is triggered, it is reset to Norton, not to Google which is the default.

I meant that Norton wouldn't change the DNS settings.  I hope I haven't confused you about that.

I understood you correctly. So no worries.

Unless SendOfJive or others can recommend another option, have you tried to go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and clicked Reset Firefox?  You will need to re-enable your extensions and restart Firefox.

Re: Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

Krustry13, I had a weird experience when I followed your instructions.

Steps:

1) Reset Firefox as you suggested

2) Tested Firefox to see if Keyword Url was blank. It was blank - Good.

3) I entered some keywords into the address bar. Firefox performed as expected. That is, Google search results.

4) I re-enabled Adobe Acrobat, Norton Toolbar 2013.3.0.26 and Norton Vulnerability Protection 11.1.1.5-3. I also added Diigo Toolbar (Diigo helps keep track of bookmarks). My Diigo extension was zapped on the reset. So I had to reinstall.

5) I started writing a message to you to thank you for your solution. As a quick test, I put some words into the address bar to search. Bam, back to Norton.

6) I checked About:Config and then Keyword.url and it was populated by the Norton stuff.

7) I replaced Norton Stuff with "https://www.google.com/search?q=" (w/o quotes).

My guess is that when I re-enabled the two Norton extensions, the undesired behavior was also re-enabled.

Bottom line: Users need to provide their value for Keyword.Url.

Thank you for your help!

So, is it still at Norton?

If you open Internet Explorer and search from the address bar (not from any toolbars) do you get Norton safe Search or Google?

No, once I changed keyword.url to https://www.google.com/search?q= I am back to Google.

Bing.

I rarely use IE. New pc with Windows 8, so Bing is the default.

Re: Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

After Firefox performed a slight update to 19.0.2, I discovered that my default search engine on Firefox was again changed back to Norton. And, the about:config, keyword.url parameter was reset back to Norton, too.

Does anyone know how to get rid of Norton's invasive penetration of Firefox?

More specifically,

  • When Firefox updates, I always want Google as my default search engine.
  • The about.config keyword.url should be blank and Google should be the default search engine, even after updating.

Norton should be ashamed of themselves for not allowing users to reset everything back to its default setting easily.

Re: Firefox Address Box & Norton Safe Search Results

I spent over an hour Norton to address my concern with having my search setting reset to "Norton Safe Search by Ask" every time Firefox updates. I prefer to use Google.

There are two solutions:

1) Completely uninstall Norton 360 using Norton Removal Tool. Please see:
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Reinstall Norton 360. When prompted to use Safe Search, ensure that the option is not selected. It's a checkbox. Just avoid this option altogether.

2) Manually reset Firefox parameters so that Google is your preferred search engine:
 - In the FireFox search bar, select Google
 - About:Config | Promise... | search for "keyword.URL" and use value "https://www.google.com/search?q=" (w/o quotes)
 - About:Config | Promise... | search for "browser.search.defaultenginename" and use value "Google" (w/o quotes)

I think Norton's behavior is sleezy. If you can select something that might be detrimental to your user experience, you should be allowed to easily revert to your prior settings.
