Firewalls and settings for new users

Hi All

I have been reading with great interest and a little fear regarding the dreaded "firewall".I understand what it does and why.But a queston I have is.As a new user to computers and NIS2009.Do I just leave it on its default settings and be happy with that and trust its doing its job?Or Are there little things I should do to personalize it to the way my PC is set up,or do I assume that the firewall can work this out on its own and adjust accordingly?

Especially when it comes to this Remote assistance(this does not show in my logs and as far as I know is off),But this "remote access connection manager service" which in my case starts up and I can see it in my system log.As a new user this area does confuse me.Can any one explain when exactly should we see any "REMOTE" whatever showing up in our logs?(Windows logs) as I understand I should be the one to initiate any remote services.Sorry guys if this is coming across a little jumbled.I will wait and see what response I get and hopefully clarify anything then.

Does Norton use the remote access connection manager?

Cheers Mo

Re: Firewalls and settings for new users

Hi mo,

You can leave the Firewall on the default settings and let NIS 2009 take care of things for you. That would certainly be best for a new user. I actually have mine on the default settings.

There are some folks here on the forums who like to make adjustments to their Firewall settings and there is nothing wrong with that.

The only time you might have to make an adjustment is if a program experiences connectivity issues. But that would be rare as the NIS 2009 Firewall is pretty smart.

Sorry mo, I forgot about your other question.

If you have no problems connecting to the internet, leave remote access connection manager alone.

You can read more details here.

Re: Firewalls and settings for new users

Hi mo,

Yes, the same information about remote access connection manager would apply to XP.
