First time smart phone user

Hi All,

Long time since visiting here. Tomorrow I will be reciving my first smart phone, an LG K30 from Spectrum, and I would like to know the correct procedure to install Nortion Security on this phone. I have 2 of 3 subscriptions available and do not want to do this more than once. Also, how soon after activating the phone should I start installing Norton. After reading another post, I am assuming that my Norton Security (22.16.2.22)  will work on not just computers. Thanks for any input on this.

Re: First time smart phone user

I would install Norton before you install any other apps on the new device. Open the Google Play app on the device and search for and install Norton Security and Antivirus. During the install process you should see a Start 30 day Trial. Below that should be a "I already have a subscription" link. Click on that and you should be taken to sign into your Norton Account. Once you sign in, you will have the full version of Norton Mobile Security, NMS, installed.

Then you can continue to set up the rest of the apps you want.

peterweb,

Thank you for such a quick response and straight forward procedure. Just out of curiosity, any other quick tips for an old guy easing into this new fangeled phone thing. I have no desire to tweet, face or any other of those land mines. Anyway, thanks a lot and have a wonderful Christmas and New Years.

You are welcome olddog.

any other quick tips for an old guy easing into this new fangeled phone thing.

In addition to the excellent article Hammer_Bro linked to, I have a couple of suggestions.

Only install apps you know you need, and only install them from the Google Play Store app.

Use the same caution you use with PCs. ie Be careful where you surf on the internet, do not click on links in emails, do not open emails from sources you do not know. Do not post personal information online.

Last note. Although it is a smart phone, there is no need to use it as anything other than a phone if you don't want to.. That is the case with my wife. Our provider no longer supported the basic flip phone she had, so we had to purchase a smart phone. All she has learned to do is make and receive calls. That is all she wants.

Re: First time smart phone user

Thanks everyone for your comments and guidelines. A few comments now that I have had this phone for a few days. I was suprised at the amount of apps already on this thing, even the 150 page LG manual leaves a lot to be desired. I cannot believe how touchy the screen is, seems like a finger getting close causes something to happen. Typing for now is 1 finger hunt and peck and the phone is so slippery I feel like I am trying to hold an eel. All problems I intend to handle on way or another. I will not be denied. Any other comments or suggestions are welcome. Happy Holidays to all.

Re: First time smart phone user

What you are seeing are normal observations for a new user to smartphones.

the phone is so slippery I feel like I am trying to hold an eel.

If you purchase a protective cover for your phone, that feeling will be resolved.

The manuals are not really designed for novices. They assume that everyone purchasing a phone will know the basics. Here is a guide that can help new Android users.  https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/guide-to-android/

You will get used to the screen sensitivity, and the other nuances of a smartphone will come with practice.

Re: First time smart phone user

peterweb,

Thanks for the article, I have bookmarked it for reading along with a google search I did on how to use a smartphone. Beat you to it on the phone case, got the phone on Wendesday and ordered a case, car charger and memory card the next evening. I want to again thank you for all you have done, Mobile Master is a fitting title.

Re: First time smart phone user

Just open the NMS app and tap on the three bars at the top left. Then tap on Sign In. Sign into your Norton Account and you should have the full version activated.

OK-I am throwing in the towel. I have tried to enter my product key from my norton account, all 25 number, 3 times and have been rejected 3 times. How do I uninstall this thing. There is no option to remove within the app that I can find or on the google store app for norton.

Re: First time smart phone user

peterweb,

Sorry. I should have told you how long I have had this norton account. Bet it would have made things different.

After having contacted a non US help center I have found out that the norton subscription I have had since 2010 does not cover anything but computers, not mobile devices. I cannot remember receiving any notices from norton about an upgrade being available for my account. Tech support told that I can get the delux edition for 39 dollars. My big question is; my current subscription renews in February. If I get this new delux now, is this for 1 year or 2 months.

Re: First time smart phone user

That information on the product you currently have does make a big difference. Maybe I should have picked up on it when you mentioned a total of 3 devices.

Now that you know that, you can contact Norton Support again to have them upgrade your product. At that time, you can ask what the expiry date would be. Chances are, they can update you and add the full year of the new subscription to your old one.

Please let us know how it goes.

Re: First time smart phone user

You hit that right on the mark. After my first rather heated call to tech support, and making sure he was right about the devices, I got back to tech support. In about 20 minutes I had the delux norton on both my computer and phone, and, like you said my renewal date is Feb of 2020. All in all not a bad deal for 40 bucks. Thanks for all your help. The error was mine. I gave you incomplete information.

By the way. My case, charger and memory came today. The case fit just as it should and I already feel better about picking up and moving the phone.

Best regards,

Dave
