Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

Hi folks,

As you may know, with our new software platform comes some new features, and we're excited about a new one available now - Single Sign On. We are linking Forum Accounts with Norton Accounts.

For new Norton Forum customers, this will be fairly straightforward process:
1) Click Sign Up on the community
2) Create a new Norton Account (scroll to the bottom of the login page) or login to an existing Norton Account
3) Taken back to forums to confirm agree to the Terms of Service, confirm your username (your email address for the community will remain private as before), and make any other necessary profile changes

This will seem a bit confusing to existing forum members, which is why I want to prepare you for this transition:

Scenario #1 - I have a Norton Account with the same email address as my Forum Account.
In this scenario, the customer will just need to login to the Forums with that email address and password for the Norton Account, and they get access to their existing Forum Account that shares that email address. The Norton Account and Forum Account will be tied together after login. See the image below for the login page.

Scenario #2 - I have a Norton Account, but the email address is different than my Forum Account.

For this situation, the forum member will need to Create a new Norton Account (scroll to the bottom of the login page - see the below image) using the same email address as the existing Forum Account. Once created, the two accounts will tie together.

Scenario #3 - I have a Forum account but no Norton Account.
This is a simple situation to remedy; follow the same steps in Scenario #2. I know some people are not interested in creating a Norton Account. Unfortunately for them, it is now a requirement for a Forum Account.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please let me know. Thanks.

So, Forum login creds will not be used in future.?  by scenario #1

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

Thanks for spotting the typo! Fixed.

You're correct; the login credentials for Norton Account will be tied with the forum Account information. The forum-specific login page will not exist - it will be the Norton Account login page, that will direct you back to the forums upon login/registration.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

The forum is still accessible while not logged in, and my email address is visible to everyone.

I also include a link on the main page to this thread, so customers who are new can read through the thread for their particular situation.

For the most part, people tend to remember which email address they use for which things, if they have multiple. They may forget the password, and we have ways for them to reset their password very easily. And for people who had created a Forum Account before we implemented this change, but not a Norton Account, they can always follow the steps listed above.

The folks who will have the most difficult time logging in are the ones who come to the forum often, and it appears that those people are able to login just fine.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

Tony_Weiss:

Scenario #1 - I have a Norton Account with the same email address as my Forum Account.
In this scenario, the customer will just need to login to the Forums with that email address and password for the Norton Account, and they get access to their existing Forum Account that shares that email address. The Norton Account and Forum Account will be tied together after login. See the image below for the login page.

Hi Tony:

I'm not sure if something went wrong in my case.  I fall into Scenario #1 - the login email for my Norton Account and notification email for my Forum Account were identical but I had different passwords for the two accounts.  When I tried to log in to the Forum the "Welcome to Norton" Sign In shown above appeared and I entered the email and password for my Norton Account.  I'm fairly certain I clicked the Sign In button (i.e., not the Create Account button) and got a pop-up saying that I needed a new account. Then I had to wait for a confirmation email to be delivered to my inbox and click on the Confirm Now button in the message to verify my email address before I could log in to the Forum again.

Everything looks fine now and I can log in to both the Norton Forum and my online Norton Account at https://manage.norton.com using the same email and password as my "old" Norton Account (and my Norton Account has all the expected Devices and Services), but I'm not sure if having to wait for a verification e-mail is a normal part of the process for Scenario # 1.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

Imacri, like you I had the same email but different passwords for Norton Account and the Forums.  I didn't receive a popup saying I needed a new account, but I *did* have to go through the confirmation process.  I just assumed that that was because I hadn't signed into my Norton Account for awhile. (The confirmation email didn't arrive, so after a few minutes I clicked resend and it came immediately...a familiar situation from many online registrations/confirmations.)

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

@lmacri, if you hadn't verified your email address through Norton Account previously, the system sends a verification email to you, which is a requirement for the community. That's probably why you received the email. Otherwise, sounds like things went pretty well?

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

I received an email sent to MASDinECIA whom I do not know and do not appreciate Norton sending other people's email messages sent to random people for the "hell of it".  It is disturbing and against Privacy Policy and/or License Agreement.  I could file a class lawsuit for randomly sending another person's email to me, do you want me to?  I was ready to create my profile, but second thoughts are telling me that Norton is making up their own rules as time progresses.

Sincerely disappointed.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

Thanks for confirming that there is known problem with the new Community Portal method (at least for some of us) as pertains to the IDSafe, Tony...

Other user's telling me that the new Community Portal was working (for them), and I'm not saying that it isn't (or can't be) was really throwing me off as to what was going on here.

I have also now confirmed that the previous v22.3's IDSafe (for me anyway) has the same issue with the new Portal method.

I've also since confirmed (my suspicion about) the alternate login pathway and (for now anyway) will use that as the workaround pending a forthcoming IDSafe compatibility fix - I find this an easier (more direct) method than having to first navigate to a functional (IDSafe-wise) Norton site (and login) prior to navigating to the Community website.  And for FWIW, the alternate pathway doesn't cause the IE component crash either...

Thanks again!

Hi Tony:

Yes, I haven't encountered any other problems, although I don't use the Norton Identity Safe and can't test the vault log in.

I just wasn't sure why I would have to verify my e-mail address when I've been using that same e-mail address for Norton Account log ins and Forum Account e-mail notifications since 2013.

I actually received a second e-mail requesting that I verify my e-mail address about three hours after the first arrived in my inbox, and it was almost identical (i.e., sent to the same e-mail address, same wording) except that the embedded link with the confirmation code was different.  I just ignored it, and assume that I was sent a second request for verification because I delayed clicking the Confirm Now button in the first e-mail while I tried to figure out if the new forum sign in procedure was legitimate or if some hacker was trying to spoof Norton.

Hi Topopurim47:

I don't use Norton Identity Safe, but before you try any workaround I'd suggest reading avjohnnie's thread NSwB 22.5.0.124 - IDSafe No Longer Works for Direct Community Login as well as Tony Weiss' reply <here> in that thread, which states in part:

"As for the issues with ID Safe not working with the Community login, yep I'm seeing the same problem. I've let our ID Safe team know, and we're working to fix it quickly."

And kudos to your suggestion for posting an announcement about this new Single Sign On policy in a more visible location. Perhaps a pinned post at the top of the NS/NSBU and NIS/N360/NAV boards that includes a comment about known issues with Identity Safe log ins?

Maybe I have not yet fully understood this change, but if I try to access my account with the new email address and password, I'm considered as a new user as well and there is no information at all about my situation. By the way, even my local Norton Support told me to do as above.

Hope it helps.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

To Tony Weiss. I had four log-ins in my Vault - two were at old email addresses and two at my current email address but this is where my confusion started. My 'Norton account' log-in is straightforward - my email address and a password - but my Community log-in doesn't show my email address - it shows my ID [Taffy_078]. Whenever I've logged into the forum in the past, the Vault has auto-populated my ID in place of my email address and I've always logged in with no problems.

When I tried Scenario #1, it failed - 'Taffy_078' was no longer recognised as a valid email address.

Scenario #3 isn't relevant so I went to Scenario #3 but this failed for the same reason

". . the forum member will need to Create a new Norton Account (scroll to the bottom of the login page - see the below image) using the same email address as the existing Forum Account" - but I hadn't a valid email address.

My solution was to use my (current) email address with my Community password. It worked - I got the confirmation email and here I am.

My only problem now is that I asked the Vault to save my new log-in details but I can't find it there searching for 'norton'! When I've done this, I'll sign-in again making a note of the 'successful' email address/password and then delete all the other ones from my Vault.

Update: Have stripped out the old log-ins but when I was typing my post, the Vault closed - by itself. Is there a time-limit - or should I post a new thread?

To Tony Weiss:

I would like to know some information as to the new way to sign into your account through the Norton product itself and why you thought it was such a good idea to show the world our product keys (any one who uses my computer).

When I go into Norton 360 and click "Sign In" it shows this page with my product key on display allowing someone to easily write that down and use up the two remaining device slots on that key:

In my experience, product keys are to be kept in a safe and hidden place.

Re: Forum Login linked with Norton Account Login

@Taffy_078 - Firstly, the old Norton Account usernames were never email addresses, they were just usernames, like "Taffy_078". That's probably why trying to sign into the new Norton Account integration failed, since it was asking for an email address, not a username.

Taffy_078:

". . the forum member will need to Create a new Norton Account (scroll to the bottom of the login page - see the below image) using the same email address as the existing Forum Account" - but I hadn't a valid email address.

You had to have a valid email address. Otherwise we wouldn't let you post. Do you mean that you didn't have a Norton Account created with the same email address as your forum account? Trying to make heads or tails of this.

In the end, it sounds like you figured it out. As for the ID Safe problem of not saving your username & password, we're working on it. Thanks.

Hi Tony,
I appreciate the idea of associating the community id with Norton product account and enabling SSO. That was a big leap....
I've noticed a few issues with the new login system and associated Web-UI changes:

  1. I see an unnecessary 'log-in' link on the menu toolbar on every page even after my login. If I click it {link says its links to SSO page( judging the URL when I hover mouse on it)} it gives me message 'Login Successful' after a pause.
    See the pic:
  2. Confirmation e-mail has the link going out of normal border.
See the pic on Mozilla Thunderbird:
  3. 2FA login is activated for community now, which means now I need to carry my mobile device or VIP credential enabled device or login using my authorized PC only. (I won't lower my Norton product/devices account protection anyway)

Thanks for the quick response.  I'm not sure that this is an isolated incident - see msgray's recent thread Unknown Desks Appear on My Account.  I'm beginning to wonder if some of the recent threads about problems with installation/upgrade activations might be related (i.e., because users are unaware that the installation seats in their Norton Account have been exhausted by an unknown third party).

Hi Imacri,

Just my personal opinion...

In addition to Tony's recommendation to delete them ... Consider changing (and further hardening) your Norton Account PW - Perhaps even a new email address for your account as well...

You might also what to consider enabling 2FA on your account (if you've not already done so).

Best regards,
