Forum Rank - new privilege request

At present, the ability to upload and publish images without the prior approval of a Forum Moderator is currently reserved for those forum members within the Norton Community who have attained 'Guru' status.

I would like to propose that this 'un-moderated' image posting privilege be extended to all Forum Members who have attained the Forum Rank of 'Phishing Phryer' and above. This request is based on the natural break observable within the Norton Community Forum Ranks, as shown below:

The impetus for this request is driven by the fact that forum members who are currently ranked 'above the line' (see above) are stymied when posting issues involving images in the Norton Product Beta testing forums. Other Beta testers can't confirm the issue until the image is approved.  This has a material impact on the flow of the Beta testing process, especially on weekends.

Respectfully submitted for consideration, comment and/or approval from both Norton Community Administrators and Forum Members alike.

Thanks

Hey,

....After 600 odd posts a little trust could perhaps be afforded

Re: Forum Rank - new privilege request

Thanks Krusty13; it's both a combination of trust and practicality.

If Norton Forum Administrators/Moderators are concerned about the potential exposure that this request will have in terms of 'inappropriate' image posting, then the following table showing non-guru membership counts by forum rank in the 'above the line' group should allay their fears:

The member counts above were based on the results provided by the Search > By author > 'Enter a user name or rank' feature. Norton Admins should be able to confirm the exact membership in the 'Phishing Phryer' groups and for the rest of the forum ranks shown above.

As per my initial post, posting images is a fundamental aspect of Norton Product Beta testing. So, looking at one of the currently active beta test programs like 'Norton Identity Safe Public Beta', you can see that forum member 'mp3jo' (currently ranked 'Super Phishing Phryer') is actively testing this beta product (and doing a great job BTW ).

Looking closely at mp3jo's posts on this board, you can immediately see how many posts involve images (as highlighted by a blue rectangle below):

Each of the posts above, that contained an image (highlighted with a blue rectangle), required a forum moderator's approval before anyone else could see the image contained in that post. Under my proposal, the images in each of those posts above would have been immediately available because they had been posted by a user who was ranked 'Phishing Phryer' or above.

 So, next steps:

  • To forum members; please provide feedback on this proposal, if possible.

  • To Norton Administrators/Moderators: please confirm that this proposal could actually be implemented (along with your feedback).

Thanks

elsewhere,

I've an idea that this particluar search is a function that is known to work imperfectly .... unfortunately.

Re: Forum Rank - new privilege request

What,  so no members ranked above "Super Spam Squasher" can see the benefit of being able to include images without the need for Moderator approval?  Especially in the Beta boards!  NIS/NAV 2013 BETA is just around the corner I hear....

Haven't we gained the trust to include images that might help our fellow forum members?

Couldn't this request be debated at a Moderator,  or  Administrator level?

Cheers,  Dave.

Dave,

Perhaps it has and the decision was not to change anything. Or perhaps it is still under consideeration as to how to implement it without creating a legal problem. Or perhaps no decision is the decision. The question has been asked and at some point a public answer may be available. Til then

Or, perhaps the Administrators/Moderators haven’t read this thread yet!

It’s interesting how your post above, based purely on speculation, generated some feedback that I’d initially asked for; I guess that this privilege request was a little more polarising than I expected...

To Forum Administrators / Moderators; could you please advise what options are available here that would beneficially address this issue for all concerned?

Thanks

Re: Forum Rank - new privilege request

Sorry for not replying sooner -- there has been some discussion with the Admins and Mods about this requested feature. Unfortunately, it's not a permission we're going to enable at this time. It's a legal requirement we have for the images. We're still discussing the matter, and we plan to revisit it again. But for now, this won't be enabled.

That said, I hope this doesn't dissuade you from coming to us with suggestions on improving the forums. Please let us know your idea and comments, they're very helpful. Thanks.

Re: Forum Rank - new privilege request

Thanks Tony

As long as your team still has an open mind about this request then I’m happy.

While there may potentially be other options available here in terms of this request, I thought I'd initially present an option in this thread that I feel would be of most benefit to the Norton Community as a whole. This option would give purpose to the ranking system and would provide a tangible benefit or incentive to those forum members who choose to actively participate in the Norton Community

For those who may be thinking that ‘you'll get the privilege if or when you become a guru’, then there is an important point to note here. The beta forum boards are transient and that means that when these boards are taken down, then everything associated with those posts is removed as well. So if let’s say, hypothetically speaking, that part of the enigmatic ‘Guru’ formula required that a forum member needs to acquire a certain amount of Kudos in order to qualify, then forum members who predominately participate in the beta forums are at an immediate disadvantage. Why? Because all Kudos earned during that specific beta test will be deleted from that forum member’s statistics when that beta forum board is taken down. Is this relevant? Well yes it is, because kudos given in the beta forums are typically given to posts that result in the Norton Development Team fixing an issue so that forum members and those people who eventually purchase the released product will never encounter it... I’m sure all forum members can appreciate the significance of this just as you can appreciate the reasons why dedicated Norton Beta testers are at a disadvantage here...

There is a group of non-guru Forum Members, currently ranked ‘above the line’, who participate year after year in each of the core product public beta test cycles (eg Norton Antivirus/Norton Internet Security, Norton 360). This group spends considerable time testing and raising issues in relation to these beta products. Given your legal constraints stated above, I’d appreciate if your team could come up with a solution that would, at least, allow the appropriately ranked non-guru members of this group to directly post un-moderated images in the beta forums.

Given that you know us, it would be nice if you didn't treat us like strangers every time we posted an image...

Re: Forum Rank - new privilege request

elsewhere,

I think your idea is excellent regarding the Images' Request.  As any Member will know who is above "the line", it is hard to get any Rank above the Line as you have to meet required points before Ranking Up, and, rarely, Ranking Down; you need to particapate wihin the Forums and need to be Very Active to Rank Up quickly.  Since it is indeed quite hard to get the Rank you suggested, then most of the Members who do reach this Rank will be interested in helping people and, in my view, will not try any "funny stuff" like to abuse the system.  However, this is Symantec's concern, I would imagine; they might be quite happy to do it in some of the Staff's point of view, but can't due to this concern and Legal Stuff.

Would like to make clear that the whole point of the Ranking System is not try to Rank Up quickly; it's more of an reward for the hard work you've put in within the Forums, were it being providing infomation on a Norton Product, posting a Blog, writing about your concerns - whether it be about a component of a Norton Product or about the Norton Forums - or just leaving your Comments on a Blog.  This also shows how knowledgeable a Member is, or indeed how Trusted the Member is, to new Members Joining the Norton Forums.  This may lead to a few of them staying on after their own issue is Fixed to help others because they have gained knowledge in an aspect of their product and would like to learn more; I can promise you that if you'd like to learn more about Norton Products, or indeed about Computer Security and Threats, then you will gain loads of knowledge about there things if you stick around here, and this will enable you to provide more detailed answers in a few other folk will understand who very little about this sort of thing.
