Full system scans at random times

I have my Norton set on "manual" for scans but it repeatedly starts a full system scan while I am trying to work making my PC unusable for the hours it takes to do the full scan. Norton is far too expensive to render my PC unusable. I can't work! Can I turn it off or  is there a fix for this issue?
