Future of Local Identity Safe?

As a long-time user of NIS I would appreciate a clear statement of direction from Norton with regards to the continuation of local ID safe in the future (and I mean only one copy on a persons pc and not the cloud).  If it is the intent that new NIS versions, installation on a new computer or a windows 8 pc will trigger the ultimate loss of the local safe and forced usage of the cloud it is important that myself and other users be fully made aware of this.  If nortons strategic direction is for local safe to be terminated, then I will begin the research to replace my password system to  maintain local storage and control.

I consider myself an informed user and in no way would I entrust my financial passwords to any cloud storage system under any circumstance in our current computing environment.  Corporate assurances are of little comfort when it comes to safeguarding the keys to my data.  Today's perfect storm of data breaches, NSA snooping, delayed pw retrieval from some far away system, etc. gives me much cause for concern.

thank you in advance for any sense of direction on this issue.

p.s. my local vault did convert and was maintained as part of the v21 upgraded installation process.

Hi MrMikeinflorida,

You're not alone with wanting to keep the local version.

Here's a rather long thread where I asked why they removed the option of a local version with a clean install.  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Symantec-Please-Explain/m-p/808728#M3840  -  And here is there reply  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Symantec-Please-Explain/m-p/825942/highlight/true#M4553

I have also created a thread in the Product Suggestion board asking for the local version to be returned.  Feel free to add your voice too.  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Product-Suggestions/Please-Return-The-Local-Vault/td-p/978289

Krusty13, this is the one reason I may go back to my NIS2014 image BEFORE I removed NU and SW2009, and then I would be back on my Local ID Safe. Then I will just use Control Panel to get rid of the 2 programs I do not need.

Again thank you for your help and I will support this "cause" in any way I can! Norton keeps saying that their Vault in the Cloud is more secure than one anyone can have on their system. I just do not quite buy that!

As they said to you...This has solved the important task of making users data available anytime, anywhere.

They should also add "potentially to anyone"!

So, with all of this said, is there a BEST way to get my Vault OFF the cloud before I go back to my image with the Local Vault?

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

Hi MPSAN,

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I recently reset one system back to factory settings, installed N360v6, then upgraded to v21 and the option to keep the local version was not at all obvious.  I had to look closely to find it.

DaveH has told you that running the NRT would remove settings and your ID Safe data, but that has not been my experience.  As I've mentioned before, I have uninstalled N360 on this system, choosing to save my settings, ran NRT and reinstalled and I am still using my local version.

Cheers!

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

FWIW - once again not trying to hijack the thread - I have run both the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool and the NRT and retained my Local Vault.  I believe the key is selecting the option to Save your Settings is the key.  It seems like the last time I used the Remove my Settings - the Local Vault was not retained.  peterweb did some testing and he found this to be true also.

In regards to the future of the Local Vault, unless they do something different with the Comcast Norton Security Suite (like adding a Norton Account somehow) the Local Vault will still be around and functional at least for that product.  Of course the trade-off that some Comast users do not like is that htey have no Online Vault, can not install the Stand Alone Online Vault and thus can not sync their iphone/ipad log-ins.

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

Thank you both. Krusty13, I believe I now have no other option but to just put my image with nis2014 and Local safe back. Then the key will be to remove the Cloud Vault data. I have not looked into that.

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

If you haven't already, please export your ID Safe data in both CSV and DAT format.

One more option is to uninstall v21, install NIS12, create a local Vault, import your ID Safe data and then upgrade, checking closely for the option to keep using the local version.  The choice is up to you.

I would prefer to offer you further advice / assistance in a new thread as you have threads all over the place now - it, in my opinion, makes it easier to see what's going on and what advice has been offered.

I think a priority though, is for you to find out why your scans are locking up.  Once that's sorted we can go from there.

I'm not sure how you would go about erasing your cloud vault if you have created one, but we can look at that later.

Ok, I will export data in both formats, but my Image has that as well. Regarding threads all over the place it was because I have had 3 issues and they all seemed to come together. BTW, my image, of the whole drive, is with a LOCAL ID SAFE and NIS 2014. It is only after the uninstall with NRT that the Cloud was not optional, so restoring the image and NOT using NRT for NU and SW would be the way to go. I want to do this before the scan issue as I do not like having the Vault online and want to get rid of it first. In fact tomorrow I will try to find out how to delete the online vault!

P.S. I updated my wifes system and the Local Vault stayed!

Thank you as always.

Hi MSPAN,

you said:

Here is the KB that supports your request:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-core/current/solutions/v82380415_EndUserProfile_en_us?q=delete+online+vault

This should not not have any impact on your Local Vault log-ins - but as long as you have Exported the data as Krusty13 suggested, you should be OK if you need to Import it.

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

That is great. Thank you for the link to remove the Cloud Vault! It would be great if there were a secret link or setting to then put it back as a LOCAL vault without me having to go back to my whole image of drive c:!

Re: Future of Local Identity Safe?

OK, removed the Vault. One thing I had to do was use 3 different incorrect passwords. It will not work if you use the same bad password 3 times.  :-)

Good feedback - I learned something today - I was not aware that you had to use 3 different incorrect psswords rather than the same incorrect password 3 times!

I posted this as I did not think it was obvious! I guess it makes sense as someone being told a password is incorrect would not try the same one 3 times.

Anyway, I removed NIS2014 with add/remove, and after a reboot I installed NIS 2012. I got a little nervous when it said I had a 30 day trial, but after activating my LOCAL id safe, I installed NIS 2014 again and all was OK, including my almost 500 days left on my subscription.

OK, glad I helped here and was NOT trying to hijack this thread in any way.
