Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

I am getting an error message, and told that "Core product file(s) have been modified. Please run Smart update or reinstall the product." When click on OK button of warning message, the user interface of Norton Utilities 16 (Version: 16.0.2.14 and Engine 5.0.0.5) loads as usual. I had installed Windows 7 SP1 (genuine copy) on my PC, and have the Internet Explorer version 11.0.9600.17420. I and some others got the same error message almost a year ago on 25th November 2013, and later it was solved through Norton Community forum.

URL for the previous error message reporting dated 25.11.2013:

Please be kind enough to get rid of this error message. Thank you.

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

Same problem here, two computers in my lab, both running windows 7, one has only local network and not internet access, the other has full internet, but I use Firefox not IE.

The computer without internet has not had internet or a Windows update since August.  Not sure what triggered the Core Product File(s) error.

Same thing for me both computers have Norton Version 16.0.2.14 and Engine 5.0.0.5

I agree I hope someone will become aware of the problem.

Same thing started here two days ago.  Running Smart Update gets the message that all files are current and the message returns the next time NU is scheduled to run.

Symantec is aware but slow to patch the issue.

Same thing started here t about a week ago.  The "Message" shows each time NU tries to run. Running Smart Update clears the "Message", but it returns the next time NU is scheduled to run.

Me too - same problem.  I ran SmartUpdate - up to date.  I manually uninstalled NU 16 and reinstalled.  Still get the message on startup.  Need a fix please Norton!!!

As noted, a fix is in the works. This is just a cosmetic issue that  does not affect the working of the program, once you clear the message.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

This does effect the workings in that the NU does not run as scheduled until the message is cleared.  It also gives the impression that something has patched the code, whether it has or not.

IOBTW: I also uninstalled/installed NU 16 before I found this thread.

Correct, but it is still annoying to get a message that is itself in error.

Still can't figure out why my non-internet computer also started throwing this error at the same time as the computer that has internet access.  Of course both are running from the same three license disk.

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

peterweb - understand "cosmetic", but...  I wasted about 45 minutes following the instructions in the error message to run SmartUpdate (several times) and then figure out how to uninstall and reinstall the product.  It is surprising how hard it is to find specific uninstall/reinstall instructions for Norton Utilities.  Reinstalling without first uninstalling was my first try, but, of course, I still had the error message.  Thinking the reinstall failed, I uninstalled using Control Panel, Programs and Features, and then reinstalled (again).  Hmmm - still got the error message.  Then I started with Google, found this thread, and realized my work was not needed because the error message is "cosmetic".

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

There is no excuse for what is happening, no rationale for allowing it to happen and no dedicated software security company would allow this to be played off in the manner that it has, directing it's east Asia tech support team to spout off the "48 hours" time frame for a fix.  It's been long past the normal response time.

With this happening a year ago, almost to the day, Symantec should have prevented this second go around.  It is seriously revealing.

Contact them directly and express your dissatisfaction.

I do not work for Symantec/Norton. I am just a user like you.

It is unfortunate that the support rep gave a time line of 48 hours, because as a rule, Norton will not give a specific time for a fix. There are too many variables in the development and testing of a fix. If done too quickly it can cause more problems than it fixes.

The good news is that Norton are aware of the issue, and working on a solution.

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

It's sloppy repeat of a known issue so I completely discount your response.  If the 48 hour window was BS then Symantec shouldn't direct reps to spread it.

Symantec Norton products and support are getting worst and worst. Have been a user for over a decade but now also in light of several bad reviews in specialized magazines I abandoned NIS in favor of Avira almost a year ago and never looked back. I plan to do so with Utilities when I find a suitable product.

It is almost 2 weeks since this problem was first posted in this thread.  The scheduled run of NU on my PC was interrupted by the message this morning.  I ran SmartUpdate (again) and the product is up to date.  I suspect the 48 hours to fix this pesky issue must have been misunderstood - it begins to look more like 48 days - or 48 weeks.  C'mon Norton, fix it.

I now switched to System Mechanic Pro so other than Ghost that I still use being on Win 7 this is another Symantec Product I drop.

This program was rated first whereas NU came at the 6th place in a recent review I saw somewhere.

So you sold the car just because you can't start it until you plug your seatbelt in.

You do know this is a temporary bug, don't you?

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Well System Mechanic Pro fixed a nagging problem I was having on a PC that NU never could so I guess it has better seat belts.

System Mechanic is too invasive; it will clobber  your system when you least expect it.

Been there done that...

This is BS, finally got my father to switch to Windows 7 from XP and he insisted that he still had to use Norton Utilities. I purchased a 3 PC license off the Amazon Digital Software Store for version 16 and now this error from day one. This is crazy Symantec fix this issue now !!! Free Applications like CCleaner would have had this fixed straight away. Symantec doesn't care about its users anymore !! no wonder they split the company to stop the continued falling consumer software sales and subscriber rates from affecting their bottom line.

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

I spotted this problem when I came to use nu16.0.0.126-SMUI.exe on 1st December (I hadn't used it for a few weeks). I uninstalled it and downloaded and installed nu16.0.2.14SMUI.exe but got the same cautionary message.

Having read the existing posts it strikes me that this is built in to occur after a certain date. That would explain why a PC not connected to the net would suddenly show the message and why it occurred at about the same date in two successive years. This might be tested by temporarily putting the system clock back (not something I would do, due to all manner of issues which might crop up with files whose dates are detected to be in advance of the system clock).

Maybe Norton wanted to run some sort of advert asking customers to get an annual update but changed their minds and botched up the programming. I look forward to their fix.

Re: Getting "Core Product File(s) Have been modified" Error again in Norton Utilities 16

A silent update loaded this morning and prompted that a reboot was required to apply the downloaded update.

New version is 16.0.2.28

Core file error dialogue box is now gone.
