Getting rid of the annoying popup

Hi

Every time I unlock my computer or move the mouse to stop the screensaver a little popup appears telling me that Norton Online Family is monitoring what I do.  While I think that it is a good idea to remind users every now and then that they are being monitored, especially if the aim is to prevent them from viewing what they shouldn't rather than catching them at it, the popup is so annoying.  Couldn't you display it once a day maybe or have the option to turn it off?

Thanks

You can create a windows account without binding to onlinefamily. The popup won't show up if the windows account is not monitored.

Thanks for the reply but I want the monitoring on the account :)  I like Online Family and so will keep on using it regardless but it would be nice to have an option to turn off the popup/reduce its frequency and still monitor the account.

Re: Getting rid of the annoying popup

Hi,

I'm the product manager for OnlineFamily.Norton and I wanted to explain why we show the pop-up at login: in many cases, parental controls products use a "stealth" mode where they hide on a child's machine and monitor in secret (sometimes these stealth monitoring products have been  misused to monitor other adults, and have even been used as tools for domestic abuse).

When we were designing the product, we wanted to make sure we took a different approach to encourage discussion between parents and kids, and we wanted to be sure that the product couldn't be used against other adults without their knowledge.  That's why we wanted to display this message to any account that's being monitored.  I can see how the message can become tiresome, though, and I'll talk with the team about ideas to reduce the number of times it appears.

One idea to consider would be to create a separate Windows user account for adults who are using the machine and exclude that account from monitoring.  That way, when kids use the computer they'll see the message, but adults will be excluded both from monitoring and also won't see the popup.  Might not be the right thing for you, but just wanted to put that out there as a short-term possibility.

In any case, I'll look into the frequency of messaging w/ the OF.N team.

Thanks for your suggestion, I appreciate the input.

Thanks for the reply.  I really do like the product.  Just recommended it to a colleague today.

Re: Getting rid of the annoying popup

I understand what you are trying to do, but I as the parent would like to control if my child see's the message or not.  I do not need a software company controlling my parental rights.
