Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Hi everyone,

This is an invitation to let us know if the latest Norton Toolbar update has resolved the issues you've been seeing with Google Chrome. Before you reply that you're still not seeing the Norton Toolbar in Google Chrome, please try each of the following. Please note - these steps potentially involve a lot of system reboots, however they are being requested to ensure clean consistent machine state for people following the procedure:

1) Confirm you are running Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 21.1, and have run LiveUpdate, rebooted, run LiveUpdate, rebooted until no more updates are available. Then reboot again

2) Your version of Chrome is up-to-date. You can check by clicking the upper right corner menu > About Google Chrome. As of this post, I see v32.0.1700.76 m is the latest and greatest

3) The toolbar version in Chrome is 2014.6.4.11. You can check this by clicking the upper right corner menu > Settings > Extensions. Norton Identity Protection will be listed. NOTE: this version number is special to Chrome - it will not be the same version that you see in Firefox or Internet Explorer

4) Be sure that Norton Identity Protection is ENABLED. Go to the same Extensions area listed in #3, and check the Enable box.

5) Open a new tab in Chrome, browse to any page, then click the Chrome refresh page button

6) If you've performed at least one update listed in 1-5 above, reboot your system

7) If you've performed 1-6 above and the Norton Toolbar is still not shown, export your bookmarks and saved password info from Chrome, then uninstall/reinstall Chrome. Update it until you are at the latest version, check 1-6 again.

8) If you've performed 1-7 above and the Norton Toolbar is still not shown, use the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool. Be sure to export your logins before running the tool. Perform steps 1-6 again.

Now, if you've done ALL OF THE ABOVE and the toolbar still does not load for you, please post to this thread. I will assume that if you are replying, you have done all of the above and still have no Norton Toolbar. We will likely request logs from you, and I'll provide that information. Thanks.

Also, this isn't a locked thread; I'm inviting you to post if the Norton Toolbar still isn't visible, even after following all the steps in my 1st post. Thanks.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Steps 1-3 are sufficient (for me, a Win7 user).  Norton Internet Security + 4 cycles through Live Update all ran with out an OS restart.  The Chrome Norton Toolbar is now visible and functioning correctly (at least for Vault Open/Close).

The original 1/8 failure notice 1/8 Chrome 32 Compatibility Notice still needs to be updated to refer to these update instructions.

Thanks, Larry

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

I did the original patch which required several reboots and it worked..... for about 2 days then dissapeared again.  I followed every step listed in this thread and it is still missing.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

@ambientech - I'm not trying to be the guy who asks the same thing you've already answered, so I'm going to assume that you read through all the steps in my above post which includes removing both Chrome and your Norton product, and reinstalling both of them. Along with a few reboots. Step 5 is also a critical one, which I assume you've done 3 or more times.

So, assuming that you've already done that, I'm sending you a Private Message shortly. Thanks.

I have done until Step 6 but I could not proceed past Step 7 as I get this nagging "failed to detect any norton product that could be automatically upgraded" error message with Norton RnR tool. Please advice accrodingly.

I dragged the chrome.crx file from:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\xx.x.x.xxxx\exts

folder into Chrome window (the Extensions tab), Chrome should then prompt to add

Worked fine, no reboot or relaunch required

finally, about time!

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Tried to update 2nd machine and found toolbar version was out of date.  Was unable to update it with any of the ways listed so I removed the Chrome extension and tried to add the Chrome extension back.  It downloaded but hung up in install telling me I aready had it (perhaps the IE version).  I was directed to contact Norton.  Rght now I can't get the Identitysafe extension back.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

I also had problems when I removed my extension, so I went to the norton Chat, from there they logged into my computer and added the extension back.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Just spent 4 hours with 3 different Norton personnel, a tcenician and 2 Level 2 Case Manager. One successfully made Norton toolbar appear, BUT after he installed Chrome 31! On asking whether this will be retained on update, he quickly updated to Chrome 32 only to have it chopped off again. Another Lever 2 Case Manager honestly told me that users have to wait atleast another week to get the issue resolved. DISAPPONTING!!!!

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Hi JohnnyX,

NIS 20X has not had an update completed for the tool bar yet in Chrome, and after reding your previous post we did help you get up and runing - although on version 20.  Version 21 has gone thru numerous updates since you had your situation - so perhpas it might be worht trying it on one of your systems - or you can just wait as spelled out in this announcement:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Product-Update-Announcements/Norton-Toolbar-update-for-Google-Chrome-32-compatibility/ba-p/1082527

Which states in part:

"Also, the patch is currently only available for the 21.1.0.18 Norton products and Norton Identity Safe Standalone, and we are working on compatibility for other versions. Please Subscribe to this blog post for updated information on older versions."

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Update - the toolbar has again gone away.  I seem to get autofils but I do not get the dropdown list of choices for those cases where I have multiple logins for a site.  Soulds like I need to just wait for another of the updates disucced in this thread.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

1. I have the Norton Toolbar and the extension working for gmail, yahoo mail, and all Web search function  except Outlook email..

2. I have updated to Chrome 32.0.1700.76m, Extension 2014.6.4.11, rerun liveupdate several times, and rebooted my machine a dozen time over the past week.

3. I am NIS V 21.1.0.18.

4. I am using Windows XP.

5. The Outlook emai was working with Chrome version 32.0.1700.76m with extension 2014.6.2.3.

6. I checked an  un-updated machine with Chrome version 32.0.1700.76m with extension 2014.6.2.3 and outlook worked.  -- Then I ran liveupdate and extension changed to 2014.6.4.11 and now outlook email does not work.

7. I have 6 XP machine with the same problem with outlook email and extension 2014.6.4.11 (all the same configuration).

8. I copied extension 2014.6.2.3. into an outlook email "bad" machine to replace the 2014.6.4.11 and outlook email worked.

CONCLUSION:

The new extension version 2014.6.4.11 is NOT comparable to outlook email but the previous version works.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

I'm running the lastest version of NIS. When the Chrome patch was installed a week or whenever it was released it worked on IE11, FireFox 26 but, it showed up as an extension in Chrome but the toolbar was missing. I thought I could just delete the toolbar and do a reboot hoping NIS would download the patch again but it hasn't. I've tried moving the file as described somwhere else from the Norton folder to Chrome extension folder but it won't work. So, I've been using Chrome without since hoping another toolbar patch will be released soon & it will work right. Win 7 64, I.E. 11, FF 26, Chrome 32.01.1700.102 latest update today.

I've read another patch will be out maybe within a week, any word from Norton about this?

I am comcast customer.

I have done all you suggested, but when I tried to use NRnR I get message that no current version is available.

I have uninstalled Comcast Constant Guard as well as Norton, reinstalled and still no positive result.

I have Norton Identity on Internet Explorer and is functional.

When I open Security in Norton it indicates a green dot for IE extension, but the dot for Google indicates the extension is disabled and I cannot enable it.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Tony, I did everything except uninstalling NIS. I have two keys left & don't want to use another one up if I reinstall NIS. Perhaps I'm wrong about how the keys work? I just take a reinstall of NIS as using another key if on the same pc?

As for posting pics I will do that in a few minutes.

I tried to send jpgs but it says only txt, pdf & one other format allowed?

Hi DanG,

I know I'm being a stickler here, but it's important that ALL the steps be completed. And you shouldn't have any problems with the number of installs per activation key - you can manage those things from http://manage.norton.com, and if things are still a problem, our customer support team can get you back to normal with your activation count.

Hi @RDN - and to clarify, are you running through all the steps listed in my initial post? I apologize for asking, but there has been some confusion as to what steps should be taken before reporting things in this thread.

I want to clarify that before people post "I am still having this problem" it should be followed up by "...even after running all the steps listed in the initial post" without any "...except for step 8." And should be followed by details on what they're seeing, preferably a screenshot and a description. Thanks.

After all the updates and reboots the Identity safe extension in Chrome still did not update to the 2014... version. I followed wilbits suggestion on page 1 of this thread and the toolbar came back. Kudos to wilbits and a suggestion that his trick be added parentheticallhy to the stepwise instructions near the step which instructs to check for the identity safe extension version number

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Sorry Tony, you are right I should have completed the thought.  I have multiple machines:

  • On this one, it worked when I ran steps 1-5 as I noted in an earlier post - but it didn't stay fixed.
  • The other didn't work with steps 1-7 so it is now a later project.

On this one, the tool bar was present and fill-ins worked as in the past so I posted a success, but then the toolbar went away and I got some fill-ins, but not always (sometimes only the first choice would appear and force an auto log in to a part of the site I did not want - doctors have separate partitions behind one web site separated by different logins).  I redid the steps 1-6 and I had Chrome 32.0.1700.76 m but I now have Chrome Version 32.0.1700.102 m [looks like Chrome auto updated] and toolbar is 2014.6.4.11.

I added the later post per your request to show you that, despite Chrome showing Norton Identity Protection as enabled, Norton Identity settings show it as disabled (orange).  I still have the half-right & half-wrong Identity Safe behavior and no visible tool bar.  System has been rebooted.  My question is what we now mean by "toolbar is not shown"?  I can't see the tool bar but Identity Safe does try to act when I am at a login screen.  I'm sure the moving Chrome revision isn't helping

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

I cannot stress enough that modifying your Norton product by removing files is NOT a recommended solution in this case. Following any advice like this has the potential to jeopardize your system security, and i advise against it.

Sir,Is this even necessary? If the toolbar is working, I'll be happily lying in my couch watching Netflix rather than dozing off here.

Well,

"I am still having this problem"

".even after running ALL the steps listed in the initial post"

Note here, by 'ALL', I mean every single step highlighted in the initial post. On top of that it was completed by Norton Level 2 Case Managers who personnaly took over my computer. The end product: "COULD NOT LOAD NORTON IDENTITY SAFE".

Solution?

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

The latest Chrome version is 32.0.1700.102 which I have on my PC and Norton Toolbar and Identity Safe will not work.  I have followed all of Tony's instructions to no avail.  I did them twic to no avail.

I can open Identity Safe through Norton 360 and it runs in the background.  However, on several sites, when a new page comes up, Identity Safe appears as another line at top of page and continuously asks me to "pick a log-in" or "don't ask."  This occurs even when the page is not a log-in page.

It apears Chrome is updating every few days, sometimes hours, and it is not possible for Norton to keep up.  Both Chrome and Identity Safe are great programs but have on-going longterm compatibility issues.  What a shame!

FWIW,  the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool success (ability to run it) has proven to be hit or miss when running with the Comcast's NSS in the past and there is a still a restriction on running it in Safe Mode:  "If your Norton product is from Comcast or Deutsche Telekom, the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool will not run in Windows Safe mode."

FWIW, I just ran the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool on my totally up to date NSS installation and I got the following response.  From the wording I have to agree it sounds like it will not run as it already up to date - but I do not believe that is normal operation of the Tool on retail products - I believe it will go ahead and run even if up to date???

Clicking on the here takes you back to the instructions for the NRnRT - so it's a vicious circle.

I will ask @Tony_Weiss  to check it out and perhaps suggest a different Step 8 for Comcast users??

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Slightly different view on this thread from me.    I'm running NIS 20.4.0.40 and I got the relevant Chrome 32/Norton Toolbar patch earlier today with a manual Live Update.  The Norton Toolbar was immediately re-instated on Chrome but it now appears to run as a dynamic pop-up on the displayed page rather than a fixed toolbar.  (It also now has the "Hide Toolbar for this page" option.)

On the Product Update Announcement page re the patch (http://community.norton.com/t5/Product-Update-Announcements/Norton-Toolbar-update-for-Google-Chrome-32-compatibility/ba-p/1082527), it states that a reboot is not required.  But I found some erratic behaviour prior to rebooting.   On Norton Safe Search results pages the toolbar was not displayed but the Norton Options bar at the top of page was duplicated.  After rebooting the toolbar now displays correctly with Safe Search results.

But even after the reboot, there is still another bit of odd behaviour.  The toolbar always seems to display OK on the primary tab in Chrome.  But on secondary tabs, it is often hidden - ironically mainly on Symatec/Norton web pages.   The Product Update Announcement page suggests the the toolbar can be unhidden by clicking the Norton extension icon at the top-right of the page but this does not work.  However, right-clicking on the icon, then clicking Manage (which opens the Chrome setting/extensions tab)  and then simply closing that tab does result in the Norton Toolbar being revealed in the original tab.

I'd be interested to know if the equivalent patch for v21 behaves in the same way.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

A quick update on my last post regarding the un-hiding of the toolbar in secondary tabs.  The method I found turns out not to be a function of right-clicking the Norton extension icon, then clicking Manage, etc.    It is a function of the resultant opening of the additional Chrome tab.

Simply opening another tab and immediately closing it again reveals the hidden toolbar in the original tab.

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Further observation on the patch as applied to NIS 20.4.0.40.

I've spotted another effect which seems to confirm that the Toolbar is now displayed as a pop-up rather than a true toolbar. On a web page which has pop-up balloons, hovering on an area of the page which contains a balloon causes part or all of the Norton Toolbar to be blanked with white space.   Moving away from the balloon area redisplays the Toolbar content correctly.

A good eample here in the UK are the weather pages on the BBC website, for example http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/rh1?day=0.

Hover over the hour-by-hour forecast area and white-on-black weather detail balloons pop up and part or all of the Norton Toolbar disappears.   Move outside that area of the page and the Toolbar contents come back.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not **bleep**ing about these incidental problems.  Getting the Toolbar back is a big plus.   I just offer these other observations as an aid to maybe refining the solution further.

FWIW; The dynamic pop-up-like, or apparent "floatyness" issues regarding the new NTB for Chrome seems to be exacerbated by certain "Smooth Scrolling" extensions, such as Logitech's "Logitech Smooth Scrolling" add-on.  I find that if I disable this extension the new NTB behaves much better - especially-so when the webpage window area is scrolled via the mouse wheel.  I'd theorize that there are other such behavior modifier extensions out there which could cause similar interactions with the new NTB.

Kind regards,

John

Re: Google Chrome 32 Compatibility issues with Norton Toolbar

Just noticed that a word in my previous post has been censored by the forum software.  Apologies if I have unintentionally caused offence.   Here in the UK that word is considered offensive if used as a noun to describe someone but is acceptable when used as a verb, meaning "to complain".  I thought the same would apply in the USA.  Maybe not.

People often say that the US and UK are divided by a common language.  I think I've just proved it.  So apologies again.

On different note, Car825 asked when the patch became available.   I received the Symantec email alert that it was available Wednesday 29th but was it was not available through Live Update until Friday 31st. (That's the 20.4.0.40 version).

(Note: automatic Live Update does not get the patch.  You have to do a manual Live Update and then respond to a prompt asking whether to Apply Now or apply it later.)
