Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hy!

I have installed this software on more, then 20 computers, and I have a problem. The children can delete or switch off the Norton Family Chrome Extension. How can I prevent that? I need a safe solution, becouse I can't always supervise them :-)

Thanks!

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Katie and Marc from Norton,

See what I mean? everyone doesn't have time to supervise.

Which is why we need your product to do its job properly.

The flaws in Norton's product are currently disrupting the parents and not protecting the child

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

I can protect the extension for example with file permissions, but then I can't update it.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi ,

Please check the browser that your child uses to see if the add-ons for Norton Family is enabled.  You can find it at

Go to chrome://extensions then Extensions in Chrome if Chrome is being used.

When the Norton Family program detects the extension is disabled, the Norton Family program sends an alert to the parent.

The Norton Family program still logs Web activities and also blocks websites when the Norton Family extension is disabled.  The disabled functions are

*Social networking

*Safe searching

*Video monitoring (for Premier users)

*HTTPS web monitoring

If you always get the message (If the add-ons for Norton Family is always disabled), please check with the child to see if he/she knows or notices anything.  Normally the plus-in won't get disabled by itself.  If it does for some reason, please let us know.

Can you please explain what you meant "but then I can't update it"?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Katie,

The children under my supervision often deleted the Chrome extension from the browser. So far I have not received a message from this action. The extension cant reinstall itself, is asks to be allowed to. If the extension is deleted, the Norton Family software allow all websites. If I reinstall the extension, the child can remove it within a few seconds. :-/

"but then I can't update it"
I can remove the write permission from the NF extension directory in the Chrome browser. In this directory I have two subdirectories with two different version number in the directory name. I assumed, the extension update itself too, not just the software. If I remove the write permission, the children cant delete it, but then the extension cant update itself.

If the extension have only one version, and does not get updated, I can maybe solve the problem with this method.

Other ideas?

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Achilles,

Thanks for the update.

To avoid and limit the possibility to tamper/disable the system, please give non-administrative rights (limited or restricted) to your children's user accounts to see if that helps?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Katie,

Nope. It does not help. The user is defaultly a limited user, and I denied all settings, what I can with group policy and file/directory permissions becouse they are very tricky. User cant install or uninstall programs, USB storages and local discs are hidden, or disabled for the users, etc. But if the user try to delete the extension, the files dont deleted, but the browsers database updated, the extension does not work anymore, and disappears from the extension list. The user can be disable the extension, disable it for the incognito mode, it is enough to browse all of sites. We have many computers, and many users. We can not always supervise them all.

Thanks

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

You have to install Chrome policy template then change the policy to not allow user to disable/remove NF extension from Chrome.

http://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/01/how-to-install-chrome-policy-templates-on-windows-machines/

or

https://www.chromium.org/administrators/windows-quick-start

You also have to disable IncognitoMode, when user use IncognitoMode, the NF will be bypassed.

And maybe you need to disable user from changing proxy setting, I'm not sure.

The policy names and values are:

ExtensionInstallForcelist: napjheenlliimoedooldaalpjfidlidp;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx

IncognitoModeAvailability: 1

ProxySettings:  { "ProxyMode": "direct" }

However, users are still able to kill the NF extension process using Task Manager.  Need Norton to fix the issue.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

dear Katie,

There is a $ 10,000 idea:
Norton Family operate with links. It can access, or denie the links, what the child type in the browser. The chrome extension menu is actually a link (chrome://extensions/). Why can't the NF denie this or other google links? For example: chrome://settings/, chrome://settings/clearBrowserData, etc. It say, "this is not a real link".
Can the programmer team make an update which can denie this menu?

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Achilles,

Our engineering checked into the issue and they confirmed the program will re-enable chrome extension when the child disable/delete the extension, but this happens only when chrome is closed and re-launched, since we can’t modify the preference file when chrome is kept open.

We will also send an alert to the parents when you disable/delete the extension.

There is a limitation in re-enabling the chrome extension automatically, when you install NF for the first time, parent is supposed to enable the extension once, close and re-launch chrome.

Can you please check to see if you have done that initially?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Katie,

It work, but this is a half-measure. The Child can even now turn off the exrension and continue the browseing.
The purpose of the program is that I do not have to supervise the children. So the software loses its essence.
Any idea?

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Achilles,

I am in the same situation as you are.  When my child disables the extension they can do anything.  I can see it in their Chrome history, so it is no blocking websites.  The purpose of NF is so we don't have to be there all the time.   Not only this but the new MS Edge gets around all the controls as well, so now I have two issues.

I Have a new idea!

So, we know, the NF can detect, when the extension is disabled, and will send a message. Maybe can the NF restart the browser immediately and turn on the extension? I think it's a solution.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

I **finally** found a way to get around this issue via chrome itself!   You have to enable the supervised users function in chrome via a flags setting in the browser.  I had tried to set up the supervised users first (which you can do , then import them after you enable the system)  http://www.howtogeek.com/177958/use-supervised-users-to-set-up-parental-...     to enable.. and this is more on setting up the users:  https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3463947?hl=en.  When you are finished.. exit and childlock the browser.   When it comes up later, without your password, it is showing in the top right as a supervised user and they cannot have access to any extensions, so they cannot be removed.

It sounds good. I'll try it. Thanks!

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

It doesn't work.

The child can easily remove parent account from settings, then a new person will be automatically created and he can change the extensions use that unsupervised person.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

And if the kids are using Windows10...They could just launch the "edge" browser.  Since that browser can't be uninstalled...and NF can't monitor it.

I've just started using this product, but it seems flawed in the sense that it tries to do prevention within the browser instead of on the OS level.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Hi Stuart B,

Norton Family currently provides parents with alerts via email and the Norton Family portal each day that the Edge browser is launched.

For now, please ask your child use another browser, such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for Norton Family to monitor online activity.

The team is working on the feature monitoring Edge browser.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Sorry, but LOL!

If I can ask my children use another browser, than i can ask them dont see porn sites, and i do not have to bother to install the NF program.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

I gave up on this method because a savvy child can easily disable it.  Did some checking and am trying the free k9 protection filter. It was easy to set up and appears to work in any browser.  It is blocking what NF would have if my child hadnt disabled the extensions.

Re: Google Chrome extension deleted by children

Yep...k9 works on the OS level, blocking any browser.  The only issue I had with it is that you can not manage multiple pc's remotely.  You have to set up each PC/block settings individually.
