Hacking protection in translation subtitles

Hi. I currently use Kodi version 16.0 for viewing IPTV in Thailand. The latest version of Kodi (ver 17.1) has streaming compatibility problems . In yesterday's issue of thaitech news, an article appeared and I quote the relevant section "According to security firm Checkpoint who discovered the vulnerability, hackers are attacking users via the subtitle function (translation). The cyber attack takes place when subtitles are loaded into the video streaming service. Antivirus software typically does not flag subtitles as a threat" Is this true? Does Norton provide protection for this situation? A security patch has apparently been issued for the latest version but not earlier versions. Would appreciate any advice.

Re: Hacking protection in translation subtitles

This attack vector is true and as you noted, a patch for Kodi plus others (VLC etc) has been released.

As always, the best practice is to install the latest patches for your programs.

Does Norton protect against this vulnerability?  I don't honestly know.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Subtitling systems contain 'widespread' security threat

Film fans could be vulnerable to attack by hackers who hide malicious code inside files that provide subtitles, a security firm has warned.

Checkpoint Software found loopholes in the way four popular media players handle subtitles.

Poor checking of subtitle files, the different formats they use and problems with the websites that store the files all introduced weaknesses, it said.

Checkpoint said it had reported the bugs it found to media player makers.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Hacking protection in translation subtitles

Version 17.2 of KODI patches the vulnerability. I have sent a PM to an admin for clarification as to the status of Norton products for protection of these exploits. Cheers.

Re: Hacking protection in translation subtitles

The US-CERT site has op-ed's related to most, if not all the software titles being exploited. Also providing links for getting the patches necessary if one is available.
