Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

A few months back, I upgraded from NAV08 to NIS09 and yesterday to NIS10.

It is my perception that full virus scans have been getting progressively slower.  (Yes, I enabled the auto-thread option.)

I am aware that full system scans are no longer considered a necessary and the most effective way of keeping your computer protected which is good I guess at this rate.  I think the slow down is anywhere from 2X to 4X over NAV08.  I suspect this all has something to do with increased thoroughness of NIS09's scans which is offset by new technologies such as (idle time scanning, multi-threaded scanning, and trusted files).

Now, perhaps a subsequent scan may be a lot faster as maybe many files will be marked unnecessary to scan again.  I am not sure if that is also a feature of NIS10.

Still, I am cursious, does anyone else thing that the full system scans have been getting progressively slower with each new release?

Thanks.

PS:  Note that I am generally pleased with NIS10.  Most impressive is how much the accuracy of the new SPAM engine has improved.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

I saw on my PC too, that Full System Scans slowed down a bit, but not that slow as you described... I think a little slowing can be caused by the new technologies, but this must be only a minimal slowing, as the older engine parts has been fixed, made better, and optimized to run faster.

Can I ask how old your computer is? It can be a cause too when some older parts of the PC (i.e. an older HDD) slows down the programs a bit.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

When I had NIS 2007, it would take about 40 minutes for a full system scan; NIS 2010 takes about an hour. On the other hand, NIS 2007 Quick Scan would take about 5-8 minutes, and NIS 2010 Quick Scan needs less than 30 seconds. Lol ;-)) My Vista computer is about one and a half years old.Message Edited by Yaso_Kuuhl on 10-27-2009 03:38 PM

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

Oh, and I forgot, it depends on too that how many files it has to scan!
By me with N360 3.5 the last time it was more than 400.000 files, and around 3 hours. I think on my old (5 years old) machine it was quite normal, with the older NIS versions (2008 and 2009) it was about almost the same, only then I was running XP. And here is an other factor too, the OS! It can slow down the scan too, as Vista and win7 has more background operations like XP.....

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

This particular system is 2 years old.  Top of the line at the time and water cooled overclocked quad core.

It's hard to make an scientific analysis, since the software environment due to patches is always in flux and the number of files stored on the hard drive tends to vary (new game installs and archive of old games).

I never liked the idle full scan, since it had a nasty habit of kicking off concurrently with full system tape backups and turning a 6 hour overnight job into a full day job ... very irritating when you wake up in the morning on need your work station.

So, I turned it off.  No scheduled scans.  Just from time to time I do manual ones although it is probably not necessary.  Although I still expect them to be done when I wake up in the morning.  :)

I am going to repeat the scan tonight to see if the speed will pick up from 6 hours.  (about 600,000 files)  I expect it will with fewer files scanned.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

Hi Mark:

Let me share with you what I have observed...

After doing at least 20 Full System Scans, NIS 2010 is a bit slower than earlier versions of NIS. However, the protection level is increased and that is the main tradeoff. This can vary by how many active processes are running on your system at any one time in conjunction with the percentage of CPU utilization. Additionally, the speed of your HDD is a critical factor in determining how long a scan will take, as will the I/O factor and amount of files on it.

If I perform a Defragmentaion on my HDD (I use Diskeeper,) I will consistently notice a 10+% increase in scan speed on a weekly basis.

As for Insight (Quorum Technology): As more files are added to the "cloud database" and are considered Trusted, you will see a gain in subsequent scans. I cannot quantify that just yet, since the 2010 product is new and gaining traction in the marketplace.

Please see this link for more information about the components of NIS 2010 and how they interact.

Hope this helps.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

I had norton 08 , then 09 now 10, i think if anything it's gotten faster, i have a wd raptor drive, and full scan with 10 probably takes 20 minutes for 3 physical drives (2 in mirror raid) about 260K files

i run 3.0 quad core 4gb ram

One of the reasons for this increase in NIS'09 to NIS'10 is that the Insight database will not be carried over from NIS2009 to NIS2010.  NIS2010 uses a slightly different Insight engine and the database will have to be rebuilt for the NIS2010 versions / users and on your system.  Also, the NIS2009 and above uses a newer scan engine for compressed files and this may account for some of the differences.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

Well, I just verified that scanning is probably taking 4-5 times longer than it should on one particular PC.  This was confirmed by scanning similar files on two PCs of relatively the same class and 5 years olders.  The one five years older still beat this PC by a wide margin.

The PC in question is a quad core.  I tried playing with the number of threads used from Auto->1, but I don't think that is it.  I am off to try some other possibilities.

Anyone have any ideas?  (Note:  Drives have been regularly defragged.  No other security software is installed.)

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

You mean: 08<09>10?  Because NIS08 scans slower than 09 and NIS10 scans faster than 09.   In my opinion NIS08, is the heaviest and scans the slowest.

Yes; either limit the data extraction in compressed files or turn off the compressed file scanning in the Settings > Computer Settings menu.

BTW, I WOULD'T recommend turning off compressed file scan as virus MAY hide in compressed files.

Re: Has full scanning gotten slower 08->09->10?

Well, I am not just talking about NIS10, but I think the situation was there in NIS09 as well.

I will conduct a benchmark today of the same file suite and same options on different machines.  I think that will conclusively show that scans are running much slower on this machine which happens to be the fastest general hardware of the three.

I did benchmark quick scans and this machine is slightly faster.  It seems mainly to be file scanning off the disk.

When you get the scan running on NIS2010, please chack the Norton CPU chart and see if the scanning pauses while running.

Interesting point.  Will do.
