Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Norton couldn't remove it when I tried, neither has it been able to quarantine it as it comes up as Unresolved.  I've downloaded Malwarebytes but that didn't even pick up the problem even though I did an actual scan of the folder.

If I use the FileAssassin tool on Malwarebytes will that be enough to solve the problem?

This darn thing was identified on my pc about a month ago even though it was downloaded ages ago.  It's classed as a high risk by Norton's.

Thanks  for your help.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi BelovedDaughter :

What version of Norton are you using ? It is located in Help & Support  > About .

Also what is your OS ?

I am assuming that you are using either Norton 2009 or Norton 2010. If you are using one of the following then, check if you have

turned ON the option of removal of compressed infected files. Please see the screenshot.

Also if that does not work either then please provide the exact name of the risk detected by Norton....so we can find out further.

Thanks.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi Beloved

Please run a HiJackThis scan and post the log here. Please also run a GMER scan and post the log here. Do not do anything else but run these scans and post them here please.

Please download HiJackThis from http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-curepart-3-using-hijackthis.html Choose the executable and save it on your desktop. Run the file and select the first option on the main menu "Do a system scan and save a log file". When this is finished, Notepad will open with the log file in it. Save the log file and attach it to a post here via the Add Attachments under the orange Post button Please don't attempt to fix anything that it shows until someone checks out the log. Thanks.

http://www.gmer.net/

After it is downloaded to your desktop, right click on the icon, go to properties, and click unblock and apply. For Vista, right click and run as administrator.

Make certain that auto protect in Norton is disabled while running the scan. If your machine crashes, try running it with all of the boxes unchecked, except for Registry and files.

You will be able to post the log here using the "add attachments" link below the orange post button.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi.  The version of NIS is 16.7.2.11 and it's 2009.  Thanks for your advice.  I managed to put the whole folder in quarantine and remove it yesterday butI've followed your the tip about changing the setting. Hopefully I won't have this problem again.

Thanks for your advice, and everyone else who's helped!

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi, just seen your message after the problem was resolved.  I've submitted the folder to Norton so they can take a look.  I managed to quarantine it manually in the end, but silly me if the setting for deleting infected compressed files was selectedi in the first place it would have been much more straightforward!  Someone had downloaded Age of Empires stuff on my pc (I'll deal with him later!!! - just kidding!) but it's strange that NIS didn't pick it up before.  I think at the time I had Norton 360, so maybe that's the reason it didn't detect it??

Anyway, I appreciate your help.  This forum is great - I'm glad I joined, although I've been using Norton products for about 3 years now.

Hi Beloved

Please come back and report to us if that folder is a false positive or if it is really a Trojan.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi ninenu

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

I can tell you that you have some old programs on your computer which should have been updated for security reasons like Adobe Reader. It's odd that your HiJackThis log said unknown Windows. Maybe because you used an older version of HiJackThis.

Please run a full scan with the free version of Malwarebytes and then post the log here.

Download the free version, install and update then run a FULL scan. After the scan completes you should post the logs back to this thread.

You can find Malwarebytes here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

It is a safer location to get the program from than malwarebytes themselves because the malware writers some times block the security programs' websites.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi ninenu

Please have malwarebytes clean up what it found.

The out of date programs that I saw were adobe reader and java. While you are getting the update for Adobe Reader, you can also check for updates for Adobe FlashPlayer and Shockwave player. They have all come out with updates recently and they come out with updates quite often. To update Adobe Flash Player, you have to remove the old one using their removal tool and then install the new one.

Re: Help Wanted!!! NIS threat: (Trojan) mythxpak.exe in a compressed folder (Age of Empires II)

Hi ninenu

What is the file that is being marked with this trojan and where is it located? Did you set your Norton product so that it also scans compressed files like shown in the pictures earlier in this thread.? What symptoms are you having with your computer.? Your log also some of the files would be cleaned after reboot. Did you try rebooting after Malwarebytes cleaned up?

You can also try the free version of SuperAntiSpyware and see if that can clean up some more things in your computer if you are still having problems. You can post the log here and have the program clean up anything it finds. Don't forget to update these programs when ever you do run them. And also please make sure you get the free versions as they will not interfere with your Norton product. Thanks.

Oops, forgot to put in the lnk for the site.

Here is a free on demand antimalware scanner. It is safe to use on demand with your Norton product.

Hi ninenu

Please post the logs after you have done the scans so that we can see what is left yet to get cleaned up. Please don't forget to update the programs before you do the scans and do one scan at a time also. Thanks
