How do i backup multiple computers

I have Norton security with backup on my desktop and laptop. I have successfully backed up my desktop onto my external drive (sort of)  but cannot backup my laptop to the same drive.  it pops up like its going to backup and then takes like one minuet and says error but does not give any information. Do i need to create a partition to separate the other backup files?

I also have a separate problem of my backup only being 10GB when i have at least 800GB on my desktop. Am i not selecting the whole drive to backup/can i?

Information: windows 8, Norton security with backup, external drive 2TB

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

Hi pat_wanted.

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums.

Some question, the answers to which will hopefully make it easier to help you...

  1. How are the desktop and laptop connecting to the external drive?
  2. When they are connected can you use windows explorer on both to look at the external drive and can you see the folder N360_backup from both machines?
  3. How many backup sets have you defined on each machine and what are they called?  Is it just the default "Default Backup" in each case?
  4. When you look at Backup - Backup Sets what figure does clicking on the Preview button give in each case?  This is the size of the backup that Norton would expect to produce with the defined backup.  I note that you say your backup is just 10 GB but I am not sure where you have got that figure from.

A point of information .... NSBU is not intended to backup you whole drive it is only intended to back up your data files which will be far less.  If your computer fails then you may move to a new computer with a different operating system (e.g. Windows 7 or Windows 10) and so you would not want Norton to try reinstalling Windows 8 over the top.  Similarly program files need to be reinstalled afresh to avoid confusing the registry etc..

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

Mike,

wouldn't he be better off using SSR 2013 R2 I only use the desktop version but I think you can get the "Server" version to backup multiple computers.

As you know SSR2013 R2 will fully backup a computer, files, apps and O/S in one go.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

Hi DStain.

I am not familiar with SSR.  You may well be right that it will do as you say but does pat_wanted really want/need to back up the whole disk?  And she currently has NSBU......

One vote for DStain - I agree SSR would be the better product for managing all of the backups

One vote for Andmike - I agree that a better definition of what the user needs/wants is necessary before the best detailed response can be provided.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

All I can say is that it is far better to backup to a external drive with SSR (was Ghost).

Invest in SSR would be my recommendation so simple to use and re-image.

I am sure Dick will agree.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

wow already got replies, this is a good forum. ill look into SSR as that does sound a little more like what i want. i have allot of pictures and game data.(though i do not want to backup the actual game installs, just save data) here are some answers for Andmike.

1. i am using a USB 3.0 (desktop 3.0/laptop 2.0)

2. i can use windows explorer and see the N360_backup from both computers.

3. i have only used the default backup set in either case, i tried making another for my laptop thinking maybe it was an error with two files being default, but no luck.

4. i got the 10GB by right clicking the N360_backup file in the external drive and seeing how big the file was, my preview says 10GB so guess that is just the size of the backup. i thought it copied everything to the external drive, makes sense why not now that you mention it. just seemed odd how small it was.

Okay the 10GB thing makes more sense now ill look at getting SSR, i also found out steam has a backup feature for game files. I am slowly migrating most of the things i use to my desktop and only us my laptop for school but would still like to backup files on my laptop. All i really want safe is my pictures, would it be better to just copy them to the external drive. i was afraid i might lose quality when copying pictures. If it is only a tiny amount its okay i am only moving them once. but i have 400GB of photos on my old laptop that is starting to show its age and i want to make sure there safe in case it dies. As for why Norton wont let me do the backup on my laptop i have no idea why, i could just create a small partition for it so it look like two drives.

Thank you guys for the help i am very new to backups, i have never had data worth protecting until i started photography. I know computer hardware pretty well and have built quite a few computers, but when it comes to software i do not know much at all. Other than what hardware is needed to run it. Hopefully by the end of the semester i'll have learned more about backups in my intro to computer software class. lol

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

Hi pat_wanted.

If you have a moment in between checking out SSR and other things you might like to try setting up a small test backup from the laptop using just a few (maybe 4 or 5) know data files (documents, images or the suchlike) and try backing that..  If the laptop can see the drive the only thing I can think that is likely to be blocking it might be that one or more of the files that have been chosen are not liked by NSBU (this does happen).  Also make sure that it is not called Default backup.  If you do try that please let us know what happens.

[Edit - I am sorry I forgot to thank you for your clear and helpful response to my earlier post - excellent.  ]

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

I use dual boot and multi boot computers and both are backed up with SSR individually.

The primary drives have O/Ss installed in partitions along with all the necessary apps.

I have separate drives for all my data including pics and they are backed up with SSR using incrementals onto USB 2 and 3 external drives.

In the case of a crash the O/Ss only have to be re-imaged and that is done in a matter on minutes.

Backups can be run in the "Hot" or "Cold" environment and the backup files can also be used to transfer to a new drive in case the primary drive dies.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

Okay i selected just 4 pictures for the backup and named it laptop backup and deleted the default set, it says the drive is not connected when i try the backup. it shows up when i select the drive for the destination, i can access the drive and copy pictures to it. i thought maybe it was some of the security stuff that came with my laptop like port locker or bioaccess so i disabled them and reconnected the drive but no luck there. i also went to storage management in control panel and it shows up there so i have no idea... should i try deleting the backup data already in the drive and just start all over again.

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

I am not conversant with N360 backup, but when we have a similar problem with Ghost we clear the history and start again, N360 may well allow you to do that.

To clear the history you must first stop the Norton N360 service, use windows explorer to navigate to the history folder and delete the files (.pqh files with Ghost)

Re: How do i backup multiple computers

I don't backup to the "Cloud" or any online space.

best to backup to external drive or drives, safe as houses, I use SSR 2013 R2 desktop version.

There is another version to backup multiple computers, if you post this question on the Ghost forum I am sure you will get the answer you are looking for from the GURUs on that site
