How do I stop the "Get Norton Toolbar" message from appearing?

Pops up every day. I've turned off special offers in settings, but that didn't work.

Is there an option "Do Not Show Again"
Presumably you have disabled Toolbar in Norton Security.

This sounds like a Chrome message. Go into Chrome settings and turn off the Norton Toolbar Add on.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

...and then configure Norton ConnectSafe to have phishing and malicious website protection.

Re: How do I stop the "Get Norton Toolbar" message from appearing?

1) Turning off the norton toolbar add on will NOT make the pop-up stop from reappearing. The toolbar being turned off is the reason for the popup's appearance in the first place. For Norton to recognize the toolbar being activated, both the toolbar as well as the identity safe extensions must be activated in Chrome, if Chrome is the standard browser. Otherwise the popup will appear. If you want to disable the returning popup warnings, I suggest you try what I have shown in the picture further up in this thread.

2) Regarding changing the DNS settings, I have heard the protection is not as comprehensive as with the toolbar and suite, yet I am not sure. Further it is kind of illogical to disable the toolbar, thereby turning malicious website protection off, only to change your DNS to Norton in the next step in order to get at least some of it back. If you want malicious website protection and use Norton Security, just use the toolbar and hide it. It can be made completely invisible in Chrome and Firefox so you won't even notice it's there. It's only visible in IE.

Users report Toolbar causing browser not responding / crashes.  So, it's not so illogical.....if user wants to or has to disable Toolbar.  ConnectSafe or similar offer phishing and malicious website protection.  ConnectSafe criteria is based upon SafeWeb criteria.  btw some users only run IE and some users simply do not want the Toolbar

Re: How do I stop the "Get Norton Toolbar" message from appearing?

Ugh -- it just showed up again. Extremely annoying. Appears every morning. I've attached a screenshot. Any more ideas on how to get rid of this annoyance?

For further clarification: Norton Toolbar is installed on all my browsers (FF, Chrome, and IE), which I guess happened when I first installed NS. In all cases, though, they are disabled, which is how I prefer it. So I'm not sure why NS keeps asking me to install it. When the pop-up appears tomorrow, though, I'll click the install now button and see what happens. Bad user experience, Norton, bad bad UX.

Have you checked to see that the setting for Special Offers/Notifications is still off?

Sometimes the settings do not stick or get out of line. Try turning it back on and restarting your computer. Then turn it off again and see if it works.

We did not ask your OS, but an issue with Windows 8/8.1 is the Fast Start feature. With this enabled, you never actually get a full shutdown, which is needed by Norton, and other programs, every once in a while to fully update itself. See this information from Windows Eight Forums on how to turn off this feature. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-...

Yep, I'm running 8.1. I turned off Fast Start -- we'll see what happens. I'll also toggle the Special Offers setting (it was still off, btw, but I'll toggle it anyway.)

Thanks!

Something interesting this morning. Got the popup again, but this time it had a "Don't ak me again" link in the lower left, which I eagerly clicked. Guess it came in through background update, probably responding to complaints. Check out the screenshot:

This also happens with IE. Initially you can just click the X to close the window, then the popup will show the "Remind me later" and then "Don't ask me again", but often "Don't ask me again" appears only after many attempts and perhaps for a few or more days.
Annoying but fixable if you have the patience to wait.

I don't think it's generated by a browser, though. I think it's generated by NS itself. The popup occurs in the lower right of the screen, by the taskbar notifications.

Hi Krunchers,

From the screenshot you posted it seems that it appears from the browser, I'm saying wrong?

Re: How do I stop the "Get Norton Toolbar" message from appearing?

Well, Firefox is in the background, but the popup doesn't have any of the usual "chrome" around it, and I also have pop-ups blocked in Firefox. I think it's coming from the Norton Security itself -- it looks like the other kind of notifications I get from it, except a lot bigger.

Thanks for the update Krunchers!
What I had said in my previous post is what I often experienced with IE.
I do not use Chrome and FF. I just wanted to share how I always solved the issue. I cannot say more, unfortunately.
Users who are using Chrome and FF might know more.
