How does Password Manager work?

I don't know how PM works with me or my sites. I feel like I'm losing control of my many accounts.  It scares me.  But I need help with generating and using passwords.

Each site has different password requirements.  Does PM generate passwords without my involvement?  I understand all passwords are in a cloud vault - that scares me too.   Does PM work transparent to me?

Why does there seem to be no documentation of PM?

Re: How does Password Manager work?

Norton Password Manager, NPM, does not create passwords automatically for new logins. You can use the Password Generator feature, but you have to copy/paste them into the web site, and if you have set NPM to automatically save new logins, your new password will be saved.

You do not have to worry about the passwords being saved in the cloud. Before they are transmitted to the cloud, they are encrypted. When you retrieve them, they are unencrypted for use on a web site. So even if someone did hack Norton's NPM servers, they would only see gibberish.

Once you open your NPM vault, you can click on the NPM icon and then on the three dots at the bottom right of that window. Then click on Help and you will be taken to the NPM FAQs.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Then how do I enter an existing site with an existing password?  Do I manually type the PW in my vault?

This is by no means seamless.

Re: How does Password Manager work?

If you are new to NPM the first time you go to a site with a login, you will have to enter the username and password manually into the site. Then you should see a prompt to save the login, or a notice that the login has been saved.

Re: How does Password Manager work?

From what I am hearing, basically the Norton Vault is a secure file maintained in a clud where a user saves his passwords. Is this right?

If so, I do much the same using a password protected EXCEL spreadsheet on my PC in an encrypted location.

But you cannot have Excel automatically fill in the login information when you visit web sites.

Re: How does Password Manager work?

I do not remember my password for the password manager vault.  Norton support says they cannot reset the password because of security.  So how am I supposed to use the vault if I cannot get in?

Re: How does Password Manager work?

As support told you it is for security reasons that you cannot reset the password. All you can do is reset the vault and you will have to start over again. If you have a backup of your vault contents you would be able to import that to the new vault.

If you want to reset your online vault to start over, see the information here.

You can look for a backup of your vault that may have been made automatically. Look in Windows Explorer in your Documents folder. Look for a folder Norton Password Manager Backups. In there would be a folder with your email address. In that folder would be your vault backups.  You can find information on how to import your vault data here.
