Somehow the Vosteran malware search has been downloaded to my computer. How do I get rid of it? Norton 360 is not finding it.

Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

Both Norton Eraser and full scan, along with Malwarebytes missed this.  In fact, a Norton's community technician spent 1.5 hours on my computer last night, reinstalling Norton, deleting files, and he also did complete scans and did not catch this virus.  When I turned my computer on this morning, HP message told me I had to do a system recovery to factory settings.  I did this.  Now, my computer still has Vosteran and has frozen up to just a desktop.  I cannot get onto the internet on it.

Technician's name was Ramesh - he talked to me via chat from 12:30 AM to 1:30 AM PST.  May his notes or history can help to figure out what I could do.  I am Comcast customer with Security Suite.

Thank you, Wendy

Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

I also tried PowerEraser and it did not find it. It seems another call to Ramesh is in order Wendy. Was the computer working properly before you shut it down? How much do those support calls cost? Will they guarantee the repair so you can get it fixed for real? Wonder if it is possible for a computer to be rendered useless in trying to get this Vosteran off.

Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

Hey I just got the malware on my computer and removed it. The only way to delete it so far that i know of is if you were luckily using a different account other than the main account that is already on the computer. When I got the malware I first  restored computer to 3 days prior to today (i just got the malware). To restore click on the windows button on the bottom corner and type in restore and it should be there. After I logged off the user account that I was on and went on the main account and deleted the account with the malware. To delete the account go to the control panel and there will be (add or remove accounts). If you only have one user account then I'm sorry this won't be of use for you because the main account can never be deleted. Maybe you can create another user account and the malware won't interfere with your browsing and whatever you're doing.

Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

I think that it is now gone! I just removed it using the Windows uninstaller.

Before you do this find the subdirectory Vosteran. Note the other two that were installed on the same date. Write them down because later you have to remove or block these cookies. Users/ i forget this step/ appdata/roaming

In Windows, sort the subdirectories and there are three with the same time and date. You have to uninstall these as well or it comes back. Actually one of the three didn't uninstall, one of the other two seems to control it.

Hi,

Vosteran.com is a browser hijacker that is designed to hijack your browser and change its settings, homepage and default search engine completely. It is generally give free downloads and displays ads and sponsored links on the search results. I too got fed up when i got this virus on my system. But thanks to a post that helped me to manually remove the virus.

Thanks for the heads up bjm_. For easy reading:
The site owner is an individual from Calcutta who spammed the McAfee Community forums [ edit: now here too ] by registering under multiple user names to promote one of his websites ( pcthreatremoval.net). He was foolish enough to sign up using the same email address that he used to register the site that he was spamming. Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

I'm just an end user and don't understand most of this thread. I thought Norton would keep me safe in the background without my having to become a systems analyst. My computer caught this Vosteran bug when I was downloading and installing some 'free' text to speech software I found on my Google search. I thought I remember Norton giving me a 'safe' message when I downloaded the software -- at least there were no warning messages from Norton. Could you explain the difference between a virus and 'malware'? Does Norton 'catch' viruses but not 'malware'? I immediately uninstalled the offending software, but the bug remains. Whenever I open my Firefox browser, a second tab automatically opens from Vosteran. I haven't seen any problems other than this yet. Is it safe to continue to use my computer?

After reading the response on this thread, I'm very reluctant to go through the DIY process of cleansing my computer of this 'malware' unless someone can provide a step by step instruction. Will Norton be providing an update to take care of this soon??? What does WOT stand for?

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this Vosteran Search browser hijacker. Be very careful what you agree to install.
Always opt for the custom installation and deselect anything that is not familiar, especially optional software that you never wanted to download and install in the first place. It goes without saying that you should not install software that you don’t trust.

Re: How to remove Vosteran search malware

I use Windows 8.1 with Google Chrome. My computer got infected with the malware Vosteran yesterday which in spite of having Norton Internet Security installed failed to recognize it. Malware is covered under that plan but I don't think Norton shout too much about it as malware will seek to exploit existing vulnerabilities on systems making their entry quiet and easy.

I believe I have found a probable way to manually rid my computer of this menace because I was so angry and hence determined to do so.

Go to chrome://settings.

Then Settings>On start up>Open a specific page or set of pages.Click on "Set pages".Remove/delete anything to do with Vosteran and make Google the default.start up page (https://google.co.uk in my case) Click "ok".

Next Settings>Appearance>Show home button (box should already be ticked) Vosteran may be showing here. Click on "Changes">Open this page should read https://google .co.uk in box. Click "ok".

Next Settings>Search. Google should be in left hand box  Click on right box, "Manage search engines..." If you see Vosteran there remove/delete it and click on Google to make it your default search engine. While here it might pay to check through "other search engines" to for sites that look untowards. Click "Done".

At this stage I checked to see if I had managed to get rid of Vosteran but was still having some issues and took plunge and installed Malwarebytes. I left this run overnight. It had found 200+ incidents of malware all relating to Vosteran which it had immunised.  (Many of these events detailed "App/Enable". A website "cvkgpq.com" was also, associated with Vosteran.) Clicked ok to delete them. Before running computer again I repeated the check list above just to make certain and it all checked out ok. As a further precaution went to History and removed anything to do with Vosteran, cvkgpq.com or AppEnable.

With hindsight. I think I should have used Malwarebytes first then the checks last.

I have only just achieved this so has not fully had the test of time but would wish to place this on the forum so that everybody can get rid of this terrible needless irritation from mindless imbeciles

To remove Vosteran manually - do the following:

  1. Remove lately installed programs that you are not sure in (converters, downloaders)
  2. Reset search settings in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome:
  • Open Internet Options

  • Go to Advanced tab

  • In Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Click Reset in opened window again.

  • Select Delete personal settings checkbox to remove browsing history, search providers, homepage

  • After Internet Explorer finishes resetting, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
  • Open Firefox

  • Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information in menu.

  • Click the Reset Firefox button.

  • After Firefox is done, it will show a window and create folder on the desktop. Click Finish.

  • Go to the installation folder of Google Chrome: C:\Users\"your username"\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\User Data.

  • In the User Data folder, look for a file named as Default and rename it to DefaultBackup.

  • Launch Google Chrome and a new clean Default file will be created.

You can use Avast Browser Cleanup to reset browser settings - it is easier. Use Malwarebytes free if you can't remove Vosteran manually. Hope this will be helpful.

I contacted help at Norton.  I asked to be walked through the process.  For the uninitiated this was a very easy job.

Go to Explorer page.  Gear sign at top very right.  Click on that symbol.

Click on 'manage add-ons'  Go to panel displayed.  Second down is 'search providers', click on that.

Display shows the providers. Mine is 'Bing'. Highlight the dreadful Vosteran and use the remove command below.

Happiness for me.  Nothing complicated. Thanks to Jobelle

I found the answer by Percy Vere very helpful. Also the post by Charles Bradshaw.
Also, I agree with the post by gwalks:

After many years of safe web browsing, I got this Vosteran when updating something I thought I was familiar with. But I had JUST upgraded from Norton 360 to Norton 360 Premier (sounds so fancy, sounds like it will kill everything bad), so it never occured to me I would be spending about 3 hours trying to figure out how to resolve this, running all of the Norton scans, then downloading and using the Norton Power Eraser (which DID NOT catch this thing), and so on and so forth.

The posts by Percy Vere and Charles Bradshaw (they didn't include any links and I could follow the steps easily myself) helped me find out how to remove Vosteran from both my IE and Chrome browser settings, but I suspect I have only removed what is at the surface, and that there is a Vosteran root buried on my PC somewhere.

I still don't understand why Norton didn't catch this on the way IN, and why I can't just ask it to search for the Vosteran "root" and dig it up and kill it.

Finally, I'd like to know why the Norton experts here cannot delete posts planted by others in order to deceive. How are we Newbies supposed to know any difference? Percy Vere and Charles Bradshaw each had only 1 post (which to me says "don't trust this just yet", just like it does about me) yet their answers were in fact helpful. Before I decided to register here so that I could post this comment, I would search for my concern and always looked to answers by a "Norton Fighter" but in this thread, they only tell me to go to the list of free malware removal sites and then... nothing.

Hello bondkatt

We do have a free chat program for users of the Norton products. Please have your key ready and tell them you would like to have some free help in removing some malware.

https://www.norton.com/chat

We recommend the users to go to one of the free malware removal sites because they work with you on a 1 to 1 basis and they keep your computer safe. They will tell you the proper tools to use and scans to run. Many of our users have come back to report here that they were pleased with their service. The people that help you clean up your computer are trained removalists who have gone to school to learn how to do this removing and it's a continuous learning process. They are professionals in what they do.

We don't have the proper environment in the Forum to have a malware removal section. We are all users like you are and this is a user to user Forum. There are some Norton staff who pop in here from time to time when they have some free time. They have a Norton Employee logo below their name when they post here. We don't like to recommend any tools or scans to run other than your Norton product because doing so can make removal more difficult. A lot of these malware are PUPS. They often come bundled with other software.Norton products catch some of them. Honestly, going to one of these removal sites is your best bet because they don't go into your computer and they know what they doing.

My previous post has the link for them. Hope this helps and makes you feel more comfortable.  Thanks.

Curiously, I have not experienced the Vosteran browser highjacking symptoms for the last couple of weeks. Could the problem have cured itself? I don't remember, but I may have updated my Firefox version at some point, and maybe that did something?

Looks like my thread at the qmalware site has been removed, but apparently you were able to view it while it was still active. Just curious what made you conclude that I had been dumped by the site? One of the possible interpretations of their response which I had was that, after running the program from their link with no findings of anything toxic in the scanned files, they may have concluded that my system is no longer infected, and I didn't need any help ('You can go BYE'). But you thought I was dumped. Just wonder why you concluded that?  Unfortunately, since they removed the thread, we will never know what they were trying to say. I do hope the 'experts' on this forum will refrain from recommending the qmalware free forums for Vosteran malware remediation as they are not only not helpful because of their touchy temperment and inability to communicate, but also wasted a lot of my time. Not to mention destruction of 2 months of documentation.
