I doesn't matter whether you agree on this or not it is against the terms and conditions of the software and is therefore illegal.

The proper way to do it is:- For example.

I have a PC running NIS2010, and my wife bought a new notebook without NIS2010.  Therefore, my PAID subscription of NIS2010 (which entitled me to use NIS2010 for 3 users)  can be use in my wife's note book.

She can download NIS2010 and install and than use my subscription & Key.  This consistute 2nd user.  However, if my dad who does not reside in the same address, cannot be added as another user.

Thank you

Re: How to renew account using friends software

Hi GreatNate1312,

As mdturner has said, you would be going against the licence terms if you helped your friend out the way you have described. You can read the full licence terms over here (just choose the appropriate Norton product):

http://www.symantec.com/about/profile/policies/eulas/index.jsp

The statement clearly indicates that if you want to install a copy of, for instance, NIS 2010 on more than one computer, then you need to have the appropriate multi-user licence and those computers have to be on the same network; i.e., as Sea_Monster pointed out, in the same household.

Re: How to renew account using friends software

Hi GreatNate1312,

You won't be able to/cannot use the Automatic Subscription Renewal performed in your friend's computer. This is because the Automatic Renewal is specific for unique serial key/product key and there is no way you can get that from your friend's computer to your computer. If your friend has purchased new Product Upgrade, you may be able to use the same Product Key(1 License of her total 3 Licenses) for activating your's.

Your intention is correct but the situation is not quite that restictive and is slightly more flexible according to statements made here by Symantec and that fit in with the EULA:

The 3 PC licence is for 3 PCs of one household rather than one user in the sense of one user = one person.

So my wife and I are two users on one desktop PC, which is OK and uses one PC licence. We have a laptop and the installation on that is another PC licence regardless of how many people use it.

And in addition it has been said here that for example a child with their own laptop can licitly use the third PC licence.

So everyone is correct in saying that what GN wants to do is not in accordance with the licence even if the girl friend's licence is for more than a single PC ...... although maybe if they are shacked up together ..... <gdr>

Re: How to renew account using friends software

Your friend will have to renew her subscription....and you'll have to renew yours...separately :-) In other words, you'll have to cancel your agreement. You've got to stick to the licence agreements...Message Edited by Yaso_Kuuhl on 09-17-2009 10:28 PM

Re: How to renew account using friends software

They probably would think you were living in the same place, but if anything went wrong, you would not have access to her account to get the activation key, customer service would not be able to assist you without the account information, depending on the issue involved, and the activation will not show in your account.

Also, if you turn up here in six months asking what to do about some issue to do with this, there is nothing we will be able to do to help you.

Re: How to renew account using friends software

Please read the terms and conditions of participation here and stop asking how to evade the conditions attached to the licence your friend has -- that is called Piracy.

You have had an explanation in answer to your question -- don't push it or you are likely to find yourself banned from participation here .....

That is not a threat from me but just a statement of how life is .....

Yes - completely agree with delph and huwyngr. Of course, if you don't want to stick to the licence agreements, then that's your call, there's nothing we can do about it over here...

Re: How to renew account using friends software

Thanks -- depending on where you live if you look around sales flyers for the stores you can find a retail copy very cheaply with all the discounts and rebates including the Norton upgrader's Rebate which your present copy of Norton will satisfy in many cases (a few exceptions like if it was installed with the PC) so that it can be as little as $10 or less than that.

That NIS 2009 KEY will work to replace your present one for a year so don't use it until your present subscription is about to run out and it will work for NIS 2010 as well ....

It's hard to get better than that and stay legal!

I think it will be rather tough fining an inexpensive version of NIS2010 or NIS2009.  If managed to find one, I would question the product.

2 weeks prior to the official release of NIS2010, I saw at a small computer where I live.  It have a copy of NIS2010....it was in the store before official release.  It has key and product # even with a hologram stickers of SYMENTEC ORIGINALS printed on it.....SYMENTEC...correct!! the wrongly spelled company that produces Norton.  I laugh and laugh and laugh at it....the sales girl thought I was crazy!!!!.

Of course, I did not buy it.  I would not take the risk.

Frankly, if I cannot afford AV programs....I would go for the FREE stuff.  Lots of them available.  You can even use Microsoft Anti-Virus with Windows Firewall and other AV programs.

For all it is worth, I paid for the subscription for another year.  If there are too many "fakes" or cheaper versions of the programs, ultimately the registered users like us will get hurt......The company (regardless of who) will jack-up the price again to cover the cost of pirates  and cheaper version; and users will need to pay more every year.

The NIS2009 is already 10-20% higher. But I am not too sure if I will be able to afford it next time the company increase the price.  I may resort to using the FREE stuff...which I am very reluctant.

Thank you and have a nice weekend.....TGIF

Re: How to renew account using friends software

huwyngr is correct.  The next few months are when major retailers typically offer Norton products on sale with various rebates that can sometimes enable you to get the product for free.  Check the weekly ads for electronics stores and office supply stores.

Re: How to renew account using friends software

I said it depends on where you live but I can assure you that in the USA it is easy and totally legitimate -- a Symantec Staffer has even posted here "way to go" when someone complained about the high cost of renewal subscriptions.

This is from a current sales flyer in Florida but the source is Nationwide and outside the USA. I'd give the name but Symantec have asked us not to name specific stores or chains since they have to protect all their retail outlets.

Symantec -- Norton Internet Security 2009. Windows disc
$39.99 Price after $30 mail in rebate. $30 upgrade mail in rebate available.

That means $69.99 less $30 less $30 upgrade rebate = $9.99

So it you have an existing copy of NIS to support a mail in rebate fro the $30 upgrade rebate that comes out at $9.99 plus sales tax ...

Similar for NAV 2009

Just use the KEY that comes with the retail copy you buy when your existing subscription is about to run out -- you do not have to use it the day you buy it and it does not begin to expire until you activate the new KEY. But if you use it while say there are 30 days left on your old subscription then you lose those 30 days, unlike a renewal subscription.

I agree with you completely about not buying from dubious sources but these are authorized retailers of Norton products -- and the 2009s will disappear along with the prices when 2010 is in the stores probably later this month although I am sure some stores and online merchants will offer some discounting I doubt it will be to this level.

And since they are authorized retailers all this discounting is done with the consent of Norton you can be sure.

Hugh
