How to restart Norton user interface

While configuring a backup on my Windows 10 PC with the latest version of Norton Security Premium, the Norton user interface crashed.  I attempted to restart it by clicking on the Norton Security icon, but it wouldn't start.  The Norton processes, as seen in Task Manager, were still running, so I think protection was still active.  Is there a  way to restart the user interface without rebooting the PC?  Thanks.

Re: How to restart Norton user interface

You can log off of your user account and then log back in, that should allow you to access the UI with the tray icon without restarting Windows.  If that doesn't work, then restarting would be the only option left.

Windows 10 Pro v.1703 64-Bit / IE 11 / Firefox 55.0.3 / NSBU 22.10.1.10 / NU 16.0.2.53 / Veritas System Recovery 16 SP2

You can also force the service to close and re-enable. It will help. Unfortunately, but one nortonsecurity.exe file is an interface and also a system service.

You would not be able to force close a Norton Service. The Norton Product Tamper protection feature prevents any manual manipulation of Norton services and processes. If a user could shut down portions of Norton, then any malware that got by could also shut down Norton and have its way with your system.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hi @Simon Jensen, Thanks for reporting in Norton Community Forums. Did you also expedience Norton program crash when configuring Norton Backup? Do you have latest version of Norton Installed and are you able to reproduce this issue?

@Larry C : Please let us know if you are able to reproduce above reported issue? Did system restart fixed the issue?

Re: How to restart Norton user interface

Thanks to everyone for the advice.  It crashed when configuring Norton Backup.  I can't remember precisely what I was doing.  It is the latest version of Norton.  I cannot reproduce it.  The issue was that the Norton user interface and icon on the task bar disappeared after the crash and I was not able to restart it by clicking on the Norton application icon.  When the icon disappears, it leaves that uneasy feeling that protection is not working.  The reboot restarted the interface ("fixed the issue"), which is what I expected.  I'm not complaining, but it seems like a reboot is sort of "brute force" to start a user interface.
