How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

I have Frontier Fios which necessitates use of their router because the router input must be coax cable.  Do you have documentation on how I would set up Core to work in this environment?

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Hi @MikeMurray,

Thank you for your interest in Norton Core.

You’d need your modem router from your ISP, if it's other than a fibernet connection providing internet through LAN cable. Norton Core router will be connected to that, via its internet port to the LAN port of the ISP provided modem router. For more information on Norton Core, please visit Norton Support page. Thank you.

I also have FiOS and since they mandate we use their proprietary routers, will Core replace them or specific ones?  I have a Quantum router with the coax input and the usual 4 ports for the ethernet.

The best advice here is to put the FIOS router into bridged mode, then use the Core device to protect and control your local network .

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

I am running with my Fios cable router in bridge mode following the instructions in this post https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31057540-Networking-HOW-TO-Bridge-G110.... As far as setting up other Fios routers while still using a coax connection, see this post https://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 - 5. Double Bridge. P.S. I am having some issues with the Core, but I do not believe that any are related to this setup. In fact, bridge mode is the Norton recommendation.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Hi,

Following worked for me:

1.  Open http://192.68.1.1 in browser

2.  Login as user admin with password per sticker on your router

3.  Select Wireless Settings option

4.  Select Basic Security Settings

5.  Change radio button in Turn Wireless On to off

6.  Apply changes

7.  After you do this following router indicator lights will be on:  WAN coax, Internet. and LAN coax

8.  Connect Norton Core to one of the 4 ethernet LAN ports

9.  You may receive message "Core is connected to another device that is routing traffic" but I think at this point you will be successfully bridged.  This solution did not affect my security which is rated "excellent" by Core.

Have a good day.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

This is where I was heading - Frontier said to simply turn off the wi fi on the old router and then connect to the new router - but it's good to hear from someone in the community who has dealt with the same issue. Since my house essentially returns to the stone age if I lose the wi fi signal, wanted to get some additional detail; hope it's as easy as it seems. Thanks again for taking the time to share.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

I have disabled all wifi on my Fios Gateway Router. Norton Core still gives me security warning " double network detected" about connecting 2 routers together and lowers score to 132.

Did you go into the router settings on the Fios Gateway and disable DHCP in the LAN settings?

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

You do not need to use the Verizon FIOS router. Fios doesn't give the customer modem. I called Verizon tech support and had them provision my account from coax to twisted pair Ethernet cable. 5 mins later it was done. Of course I had to run an Ethernet cable for the Verizon box on the wall all the way to my router. You can also pay Verizon to do this. Once setup you can plug the Ethernet cable in to the want port of any router, Verizon or another brand. The Verizon router has both coax and Ethernet for the wan ports, but most others only have Ethernet.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

I have Verizon FIOS and the only equipment I use of Verizon's is the box to convert the signal from the fiber to Ethernet. I have my router plugged directly into the fiber converter.

Verizon Tech Support told me that you are only required to use their router if you are using their TV and phone service. Since I am only using their internet service I could use whatever router I wanted.

I have changed routers in my house a few times and I would call Verizon tech support to get their equipment to recognize my new router, but when I hooked up the Norton Core all I did was power down the fiber converter box for a minute. When I plugged it back in I already had the Norton Core plugged in and my internet was restored.

I had to power cycle it again when I put my old router back in since the Norton Core is causing lag issues with gaming. Hopefully that will be fixed soon and I can put the Norton Core back in as my network router.

Sounds like it is acting exactly like a cable modem in bridge mode. (including locking to 1 MAC address per boot)

Oh boy!!! Sounds like this is going to be a royal PITA!!! Lol. I also have FIOS with their Mi424wr combo wifi modem. Getting ready to setup Core and wondering from all I have read if putting this into "bridged mode" will kill phone and TV access. If so the Core is useless for me to use. I will try ONLY shutting off Wifi on the 2.4 & 5GHz, leave DHCP enabled so as not to affect VOIP and access to TV's in other areas of the house and see how the Core router reacts.

Interesting, so it has ethernet and coaxial (aka TV-cable) WAN ports? Which do you use? Where does the fiber enter your building? Does it go into another box? How does your phone and TV connect to... whatever they're plugged into?

I'm dead in the water it appears. My ONT is using existing coax. https://actiontecsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000556663-Can-I-Bridge-the-Actiontec-MI424WR-Rev-I-FiOS-router-

Maybe I can get a setup that will actually work and repost here. RADJ's setup seems to be the one with the most promise.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Budbo1 Did you disable DHCP within the FIOS router? Re-enable it your TV and VOIP should come back online since the Moca will have a way of routing the signals it need to these devices. Core will just pester you with seeing two networks, but nothing to worry needlessly over. And make sure ALL your hard wired devices have wifi disabled for them as well. That will prevent service drops.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

pw_pw TV and VOIP utilize the existing coax throughout the house, routing is through the FIOS supplied modem. Bridging it with DHCP disabled will kill TV and phone. Therefore I will allow DHCP to remain active on the FIOS modem/router yet shut off wifi. Setup the core as anyone normally would. My plan is first thing in the early am when there isn't anyone home. Will post results before heading to work.

Ok, so the modem is using a coax in WAN port and the other end of that coax plugs into what? Does Verizon provide coax to the house or fiber?

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

pw_pw Fiber optics come to the house via just that, fiber optic cables x 4, 4 colors and are color coded. They are then connected to the ONT (converter station) which disperses the now converted optical signals having been converted to analog for the network. The house is pre-wired with commercial grade coax to the TV's x 3 which on the network show as IP-STB's and router. One TV in the main room has the media server or Moca DVR/controller which also gets coax. TV's are connected in other rooms via small boxes using HDMI. The coax wiring has one split going to the router which connects to the coax on the router. I run everything except my main gaming computer which is hard wired, on the wifi side. IF I ONLY had internet services I would have setup the entire house via the WAN port (the one colored white) and ran a direct line to the ONT in the rear of the house. Bridging the router KILLS TV and VOIP due to the coax being a MUST for it all to function. Hope that clears up things a bit for you.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Core setup has been checking for update the past 30 minutes. Core router light is flashing white. All is setup correctly with the FIOS router. Core in LAN port one with WiFi disabled on the FIOS device. Ahh, now its saying "We cannot seem to find your Norton Core" lmbo. I knew this was going to be a PITA. Already reset the core once. No joy!! Following RADJ setup suggestions.

I CAN verify that shutting off DHCP on the FIOS router WILL kill your TV/VOIP services. Suggestions?

UPDATE: The app finally saw the Core but wouldn't activate. Seems this unit is tied to someone else's account. Gonna have to do the good old support thing. Fun fun!! Will do that tomorrow morning, time for work.

Cheers

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Update: Activation was successful after performing a factory reset. Followed the setup given by RADJ, completed setup in less than 10 minutes. Zero issues. Firmware up to date to ver.191, connection notifications working as advertised. Using the default Core DNS settings, hardwired devices are connected through the FIOS router though its not in a bridged mode. Speeds are above the advertised on our FIOS contract so I am one happy camper.

Note to new owners: Do the research before trying to setup your devices. Ask as many questions about it when and where it is appropriate. Getting your Core up and functioning will be far painless and more of a thrill once it is running as it should and you can see what it really has to offer. Thanks to RADJ for the thoughts concerning FIOS setup. My personal time has been very limited of late, truly helped. Have a great day every one.

That's rather interesting. So if your device (pictured, not sure whether to call it a router or a router/modem given it's role) is powered off you loose all TV and phone service?

So all services are distributed by the "router \ router/modem" via MoCA?

Too bad you can't get ethernet from the ONT run that to the WAN port of the "core" router, then put the "router \ router/modem" into bridge mode and plug that into the LAN port of the "core" router and have it still bridge over to MoCA for the other devices.

Comcast solves / side steps these issues by terminating fiber somewhere (within a few dozen miles) then running service to the home via coax. Then your cable modem does internet (and voice if you have that from them), and each TV cable box has it's own cable tuner (for broadcast TV) and something like a DOCIS 3 cable modem in it (for on demand and configuration). Then other mini cable boxes (on other TVs) can do various things with the main cable box via MoCA.

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

Using the Core via a Mi424wr grandfathered to me from Verizon to Frontier, uses COAX, no TV or VOIP (assume that my Frontier landline s/b unaffected). Turned off the wi fi on the Mi424wr and connected to Core via a LAN port. As noted, I get the message that another network is using the router but assume this does not affect anything but the Core "score".

Issue I am now encountering is: while my network signal is consistently strong, I'm frequently getting "No Internet Connection" messages that require me to disconnect/reconnect the modem/router to resolve. Anything in the modem settings that might be causing this ? Or something else ? Thanks for the feedback !

Re: How to set up Norton Core with Fios Cable Router?

jkaflagg Do you have DHCP enabled or disabled on the Mi424wr router? The reason for asking is that no TV/VOIP is involved so the router SHOULD accept being setup in bridged. Have you tried bridging the router and Core?  https://actiontecsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115009656006-How-to-Bridge-the-Actiontec-MI424WR

I cannot use this setup but am thinking you MAY be since you are vacant of TV and VOIP.
