How to stop child from changing time on Android device

Norton Family seems to have a significant flaw in its curfew controls.  Child can simply change the device time.  I have read other posts and they highlight that you get a notification in the log files, but this is not useful.  Can I at least get an immediate email if the time is changed?  One of your competitors, Qustodio, handles this by allowing the parent to lock out control of the settings.  Is this an option with Norton Family?

Re: How to stop child from changing time on Android device

Hello,

Yes, we do provide an alert and email notification when the Child attempts to tamper with the device time. We hope this provides a context for the parent to have a conversation with the child and review appropriate steps. At present, we do not provide a mechanism for preventing the tamper from happening, but we are looking in to this. Thanks for your inputs.

I do not see any option to be notified (by email) about a time change on a device.  Can you help point me to this?  It is not under the list of things to be 'notified' about.

Hi sfhutchi,

When the child changes the clock on the Android, Norton Family sends a notification to parent when the clock is modified and if the app is not running for a week, parent gets notified.

Do you get the email notification automatically?  If not, can you please let me know what manufacturer of the Android device is?

Thanks

Katie

I have two devices.  One is Samsung Galaxy phone, another is Samsung Tab 7.  I do get notification if location services are turned off, and am familiar with the screen in the house rules where I can select what to be notified about... but 'time changes' are not one of the choices.

Hi sfhutchi,

You should get the alert automatically no need to select the option (not the on list).

Can you please send me your Norton Family account email address by private message via the forum by clicking Inbox at upper right hand corner?

Thanks

I also am having an issue with changing the time on settings and my child is able to do as they wish when they wish.

Hi Jessica L,

Do you receive the alert notification about time has been changed as I indicated above?

Thanks

Re: How to stop child from changing time on Android device

Hi,

Parents currently can view the alerts in Norton Family web portal and no e-mail alerts are sent to parent when Time/ Time zone is changed.

Our engineering team is working on sending e-mail notifications to parents when Time/Time Zone is changed in child’s device.

Can you please check to see if you see the alerts in your Norton Family web portal account?

Thanks

Katie

Re: How to stop child from changing time on Android device

Thanks for the clarification.  I see it in the web portal, but this is of minimal value.  Parents are not going to be monitoring the web portal after hours to see if settings on a controlled device were changed.  Norton really needs to fix this to be competitive with products like Qustodio.  Qustodio gives the parent the option of locking the child out of 'settings' so that time cannot be changed at all.  Email notification is only a band-aid... but it is an important first step.

There must be a usable solution that restricts the child's device to the 'house rules' and not have easy workarounds for the child.

Re: How to stop child from changing time on Android device

What I did was downloaded the Norton App Lock App on the device. I locked the Settings app from there. Then I made a group of apps that my son is NEVER to delete or his phone is gone. In this group of apps not to be deleted are the Norton App Lock app and Norton Family (and some others). Only I know the passcode to the Norton App Lock app.

Re: How to stop child from changing time on Android device

This is the best idea yet.  I loaded Norton App Lock on my phone to lock out the Norton Family App (since it doesn't have password protection and my kids can simply use my phone otherwise to turn off the protection).  I hadn't thought about putting app lock on their phone.

The only challenge with this is that they wouldn't be able to access other settings (like adding a new wifi access point), but I can deal with that.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree. House rules that cannot be enforced are pretty useless.
