How to temporarily turn off protection

There are times (like when I'm doing large installs, building a machine) that I want to turn off scanning of files and other protections.

The web and the app are not specific enough about how to do that. Does turning off auto-protect using the system tray icon do that?

If not, is there an easy way to do that?

Hello Ted, Yes, you can disable auto-protect in the system tray and have it remain disabled until reboot.

Cheers

Re: How to temporarily turn off protection

Thanks, SoulAsylum.
What wasn't clear to me is what Auto Protect is!  Is it the firewall, or checking files for malware, or ???

Also, is there a way to disable the system tray pop-up that alerts me that a file has been checked and is safe?   When Auto Protect is enabled, yes, I want Norton to check files, especially downloaded files that I'm about to open. But, I don't need an alert on every file, telling me that it's safe.  I haven't been able to find an option for that.

Thanks, SA!

I just don't want Norton "bragging" every time it identifies a safe file!  I still want it to check!

Not sure how to do that.

Re: How to temporarily turn off protection

Auto-Protect consists of the components that check in real time for malicious files.  You should leave that on except when doing things like upgrading your operating system, such as installing the Windows Fall Creators Update.  Download Intelligence is the component that evaluates the reputation of a file when you download it and gives you the popups telling you if a file is safe or not.  You can configure Download Intelligence to only alert on risky files, or you can disable notifications entirely so you get no alerts at all.  Instructions are here:

Configure the Download Insight Notifications option
