How to view actual file names in Norton backups

Norton backups have impenetrable names, like (SCAD7BC0-2134-4848-9262-F88454DF5881), followed by (0. (1, (2 etc.  How do I translate these into actual file names so I can do a search and see if, for example, my Photos folder has been backed up?

View them through the Norton Backup Drive located under "Computer".

That is exactly what I did.  The result was (SCAD7BC0-2134-4848-9262-F88454DF5881), followed by (0. (1, (2 etc.

I need to see file names in my backup external drive Computer/Windows Seagate 3TB (E:) presented in the same way that Internet Explorer usually presents them.  I have been on Norton 360 for a while and have now upgraded to Norton Security if that makes any difference.

Re: How to view actual file names in Norton backups

If your seeing the files encrypted your looking at them directly with windows explorer.

If you open "computer" or open windows explorer and then click "computer" on the left hand side you should see another icon called 'Norton Backup Drive'.  I'm not talking about the C drive or the E drive, 'Norton backup Drive' is a separate drive icon and it may be listed down below your real drives and removable drives.

It's a virtual drive that lets you view the backup unencrypted, you will be able to see all the normal file and folder names.  If your important files are present you will know they are in the backup.

If a one word reply was called for, it would be "Brilliant!". Many thanks. I had never noticed the Norton backup Drive before. It would be worth passing this useful information on to the Support people: I telephoned them yesterday morning and upgraded to the version of Norton Security that has Backup. This led to a Live Chat where I was told "These backup files are in encrypted form you will not be able to see it for security reasons you can only see it after restoring it". It would be useful to know if there is a way of doing a Search of Norton backup drive. I put "*.jpg" in the search box but got "No items match your search" although there were some JPEGs shown. Thanks again for your really useful information. Best regards, Geoff
