I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

While attempting to set Norton Safe Search as my default search engine in Firefox 44, I accidentally somehow removed it. When I attempted to put it back all I got was an inactive icon in the upper right hand corner that Has the Norton name and a magnifying glass in a box. I have run Norton Update until no new updates are available. I am on the most current version of Firefox 44.0.2. My Norton app shows that Norton Toolbar for Firefox is ON. I have disabled and re-enabled the Norton Identity Safe add-on - it does not fix the problem. Anyone have a suggestion? I don't think uninstalling and reinstalling Norton is going to help.

Same here, right up to also seeing that useless "magnifying glass in a box". Found that (for me, at least) typing my search term in the address bar (where a URL is normally inserted) allows me to access Norton Safe Search & pull up the search results. Not the solution, but at least a temp workaround. I've not seen other posts regarding this issue but I'd bet money that we're not the only two.

Hello

I use IE 11 and I just checked my Manage Add-Ons  and Search Providers. I don't use Safe Search, but it is turned on. Ask Search used to be listed there, but not as my default. I just looked now and it's not there. I know that Microsoft has been eliminating the choices we can have. In fact, Bing is now listed and I always delete that listing, but I see that it comes back. I don't think that the disappearance of Ask is Norton's fault, but the doing of Microsoft. .I still do have the Safe Search bar though. I bet if I tried to use it, my ISP search engine would show up.

Thanks.

Funny, just for the heck of it, I moved the curser to the little magnifying glass and was able to type a search into it. So it does work. Hopefully when Norton gets identity safe working, it will move back to the normal position.

Have you clicked on the 3 dots on the Norton Toolbar and turned the Safe Search feature ON?

If using Firefox, go to Tools and click on it. Scroll down the menu to Options. Click on it. On the left side is a menu that starts with General...dont click. Click on Search. There you will find the opportunity to choose your search engines for the magnifying glass and to make one of them your default search engine. I hope I understood your problem.

As I said in my original post, I lost the regular Norton tool bar that you inserted in your response. I now only have the Norton logo in the upper right corner of the screen and a box with a magnifying glass.

Thanks for your comment. I already did what you suggested and it does work. I eliminated just about all the other search engines because I don't trust them.

I wish I could figure out how to get the full Norton tool bar back. I removed Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance Service using 'Programs and Features' in control panel; deleted the Firefox folder in Program Files (x86) and checked to make sure nothing was in common files. I used regedit to remove every item I could find that said either Firefox or Mozilla. Next I restarted my PC; downloaded a fresh copy of Firefox and installed it. No change in the 'mini' Norton tool bar. If anyone knows where the code is hiding that stops the full Norton toolbar from being displayed, please let me know. I've been thinking that maybe removing and reinstalling Norton 360 Premium might work but am a little reluctant to try.

Sorry I'm late, but as a infrequent user of FF (only when trying to troubleshot as in this case), my knowledge is not up to the speed of others - but I do not see where anyone suggested to select View > Toolbars from the Menu Bar and place a check mark in front of Norton Toolbar.  I know that is too easy to be the fix, but verifying it is check marked eliminates another possibility in my eyes.

Check out this Norton link, it will explain everything that you need to know if you are running FF 42, 43 or 44.

PS this problem has been driving me nuts for sometime.  I knew there was a compatibility problem with the above FF versions.  I did not upgrade from FF 39.  To this day I do not know how FF upgraded to 43.  Good luck.

Without going back and re-reading this entire thread - have you tried the Help > Get Support route yet?  I'd try that prior to doing  either the Remove and Reinstall Tool or an uninstall , run the NRT and then a fresh install.

Please wait and see if there are another suggestions - especially in regards to FF as I am not a frequent user of FF.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

Got your message.  I too had the same problem, no Norton Toolbar or Identity Safe on FF.  I did remove and reinstall Norton 360 this time still no Norton's  I was just online chat an hour ago with Norton Support.  I could not change the default browser from Firefox to Chrome.  The technician fixed that for me. I ask him about the compatibility problem with Firefox ver 42, 43 and 44 and \the Norton Toolbar,  He said Norton has sent all the documentation that Firefox required to reestablish the compatibility.  As of yet they have not heard anything back.  Before uninstalling go to Norton Support Chat and ask them about this issue.  It might save you some time and aggravation of removing and reinstalling Norton's   Chat is open 24/7 in the US.  Not sure about you guys Down Under though.  You still having that awful heat wave there.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

Thanks jkm49us. I completed my own chat session just now. I was told the same thing - Norton Tool Bar including Identity Safe and safe search is close to working. Although I have NO Norton toolbar at all, He also showed me that safe search is working in Google search. I guess we just have to remain calm and keep our seat belts fastened until things get straightened out.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

To alleviate some of the aggravation I had Norton's show me how to change the default browser.  No longer Firefox, now Chrome.  In a way it is a good thing I changed my Firefox browser to Chrome.  I don't know if it is my computer or if it was Firefox but I was having a terrible time using FF.  I don't seem to be having those issues now with Chrome.  Who knows, like many things you can't live without them or can't live with them.  Glad you got your problem somewhat settled.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

I wanted to update people following this thread about my chat experience. As I mentioned above, the representative from Norton got onto my desktop system and showed me that although Safe Search was not visible, it did display safety levels while using Google search. He made no effort to restore at least that part of the Norton toolbar in Firefox that includes safe search. He led me to believe that the missing tool bar was the result of the work to get Identity Safe back up and running. Funny thing is, when I went to my laptop, there was the tool bar with safe search working fine. Between all the months we've done without Identity Safe, and this Norton rep not even bothering to get my Norton tool bar back, I am beginning to loose faith in the company.

Saw your post, I only have my laptop so I am not able to check on another device.  I am currently running Firefox v43.0.4, Firefox keeps hounding me upgrade from 43 to 44.  The last time this happened I was running version 39 and had no problems with any of the Norton products. The problem arose when I inadvertently downloaded 43.  I am curious what version are you running on your desktop and laptop?  Are they the same?

I would suggest that this is where we are with your issue. Download and run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from   www.norton.com/nrnr

Be sure you read the Before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate after the reinstall, restarting as required until not updates are available.

Hey Ken I found this information on Firefox help.  Lots of folks complaining about Norton's inability or unwillingness to get going on resolving the compatibility problem   In the link there is post called Chosen Solution he talks about a Clean Install for Firefox which is Firefox 38.3 Oesr  (Extended Support Release.  Let me know what you think, I am tempted to do this.   I am not the most computer literate person around.

Even going back to the FF ESR v38 will not help if you are using the v 22.5.5.15 of your Norton product. It is the code for the Norton Toolbar that is no longer fully compatible with FF. Not the other way around.

Like I said I'm not the most computer literate person on the planet.  You just saved me some time doing this.  Obviously it is not possible to get an older version of 360 that would be compatible with FF 38 I guess.

Thanks for the heads up.  I am done with racking my brain on this issue.  I switched over to Chrome when this problem arose.  I will make do with it until Norton gets off its butt and fixes this issue.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

I just removed and reinstalled Norton 360 Premium and it had no effect on Firefox - still no toolbar. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I uninstalled Firefox and removed everything I could find anyplace on my hard drive, including the registry, that mentioned Mozilla or Firefox. I did a 'clean' stall of Firefox 38 and it found some hidden file and set up the way I left Firefox 44. I had even deleted many of the search alternatives, leaving Norton as the default. The install found that information with no problem. After all of this, still no toolbar. I can't even get Firefox to save user ID's and passwords anymore. So, I'm forced to use IE or Chrome.

This thread is dealing with problems on a Windows PC with FireFox.

The ID Safe is two separate programs/apps for the two operating systems.

Re: I accidentally removed Norton Safe Search from Firefox 44 -

I am aware of what it is...my comment is directed to the problem of ID Safe and Norton toolbar...the point I was making is that Norton has it all working for Android, but cannot get things working for Firefox...I have Norton 360 Premier for
which I paid nearly $100 incl taxes with a renewal date of August. It was fully functional for about 2-3 months. I am a Firefox devotee and have been for many years. I found it curious that Norton could launch a Security system for Android when it seems they are not addressing the Firefox issues. I did not intend to imply that the systems are the same, but was being sarcastic that they are selling a new system (for mobile devices) when the security suite including ID SAFE is not fully functional for for Norton 360 Premier. I thank you.

ID Safe works just fine in 360 and in the mobile versions. Both of which have been around for some time, neither is new or changed. The problem we are having here is the integration of ID Safe with the Firefox browser. Firefox made changes to the way they allow 3rd party add ons sometime last year. These changes made the current Norton Toolbar incompatible with the newer FF versions. The ID Safe integration has to be re coded from the ground up, and this has to be done in a way that does not compromise the security of the users login information.

I am glad that Norton is taking the time necessary to do the job correctly. Imagine the outcry if Norton rushed out a 'working' version that later allowed hackers to get login information. Better to do the job right the first time.

I too prefer Firefox, but have no issue using IE for the few pages I want to use ID Safe. Then I revert to FF for normal browsing.

It is not the FF version that is the issue. As long as you are running a current Norton product, properly updated with LiveUpdate, you will see the issue with the ID Safe incompatibility.

Your issue appears to be something different as you have no Toolbar functions at all. Maybe you need to refresh your Firefox installation. See this Mozilla help page for information on how to refresh your Firefox. Be sure you read carefully before starting.

Hi, definitely not browsing in a Private Window. I've tried refreshing FF as suggested earlier and now have absolutely nothing for Norton! Tried searching in the 'Add-ons' for anything with 'Norton' in the title but nothing appears at all !! I've tried Chrome and I don't really like it, but having read the article about August, I suppose I'll just have to wait and put up with things. It is extremely frustrating!!!

Try create new FF default profile  .. "firefox.exe -p" ...and open new profile.
If new profile browses okay and if Norton extension is not in new profile.
Norton is not installed properly.  IMO

Hello Paula-Ann

Have you tried using a freshened up install of your Norton product? I would suggest that you use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool. Please back up your identity Safe first and read the warning info first.
