I am in the UK and if I put the VPN on I cannot get into The National Lottery

I have VPN and it is supposed to keep me safe.    At the moment it is keeping me out let alone the crooks.    I am in the UK and if I put the VPN on I cannot get into The National Lottery or if you please Sainsburys just to do my shopping.   I mean what is going on?

~ some sites want to know your true location to provide localized content

Web sites often block VPN access for legal or copyright reasons. There is nothing a VPN provider can do to get around these blocks.

Contact the individual web sites to see if they block VPN access. Many sites do this for legal/copyright reasons.
A VPN service does not block access to any sites. There is no white/black lists for sites.

Web sites have the right to protect their content. And sometimes there are legal reasons for blocking access to users from a different geographic location.

Some VPN providers may have found ways to circumvent these legal protections. But Norton is not here to bypass legal protection. If you are one that wants to access this kind of legally protected content, then maybe you would be better served with another product.

Why Do Some Websites Block VPNs?

One of the only ways to protect your right to privacy and information online is to use a VPN. Some websites infringe on those rights by blocking VPNs, but they do it for a good reason.

The big names that are notorious for blacklisting VPNs are Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and the BBC. It’s hard to figure out exactly how many websites block VPN access, but the number could be in the thousands. Most of these sites aren’t actively at war with VPNs, but they manage to blacklist a lot of VPN IP addresses over time passively.

Learn why media streaming services or apps do not work when connected to Norton Secure VPN

Some streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Showtime, offer geo-restricted content that makes it unavailable in certain regions. These services also block the content if they detect a VPN, a proxy, or an unblocker service as a method to bypass the geo-restrictions.

Connect to a different VPN region
[...]
Apps such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix, collect IP address information and actively blacklist any IP address that they suspect belongs to a VPN. Once the IP addresses of the VPN server used are blacklisted and blocked, these apps do not work unless VPN service is dynamically changing the IP addresses. To overcome this, use the Split Tunnel feature. Click Enable Split Tunnel in Norton Secure VPN to know more on Split Tunnel.

The Split Tunnel feature is currently available with Norton Secure VPN for Windows and Android only.

Re: I am in the UK and if I put the VPN on I cannot get into The National Lottery

FWIW ~ as test: from US with Norton 360 Secure VPN On - United Kingdom
I can access national-lottery.co.uk/ with Accept All Cookies
I cannot access sainsburys.co.uk/ - 403 ERROR The request could not be satisfied.

@BelleDixie
I imagine sainburys.co/uk wants to know your true location to provide localized content.

Thank you for your detailed reply which is appreciated.   I now know why.    I will keep taking it off to use those sites and pop it back on using it otherwise.

I have similar problems, Generally, if I select the UK as the region then no problems occur, but if I set to Auto region and it selects another country then Some UK sites need to know your locality. They cant pick up an exact location as I have that setting turned off but the IP has to be UK-based.

The other site I have to cancel VPN is Sainsburys , just wont let me in the site if VPN is on.   So frustrating.   This is supposed to keep the crooks out not me.   I will look at my settings, thank you for the suggestion.

Re: I am in the UK and if I put the VPN on I cannot get into The National Lottery

If you have an account with Salisbury's - sainsburys.co.uk.   Sainsbury's has your personal information, your home address, your email address, etc.   Sainsbury's knows you.  Why would you want to mask your identity, mask your location at a website - at a service - at a grocery - at a bank...that knows you, that you trust, that you log into, that knows your log in credentials?

Some websites block VPN users and will show a 403 Forbidden message if you try connecting to them through a VPN.
Individual websites may not ban every VPN server out there, so you might want to try switching to a different server provided by your VPN service of choice—or switching to another VPN service entirely.
