Re: I am wondering if I get the Norton updater?

I found the answer.  It seems they didn't officially release it yet and are rolling it out to customers slowly.  I have it in history it has a place for it, but that's it.

Just a professional heads-up about software updater. I don't suggest using it as there are those who are reporting that it has borked their computers, leaving some of them not usable. Allow Windows and/or the programs installed to self-check for released updates to ensure you are getting the appropriate software updates for your specific machine and its hardware. Manufacturers also have websites to use for that purpose.

Re: I am wondering if I get the Norton updater?

Hi ffwfire:

When you say "Norton Yahoo" are you referring to the Yahoo-branded version of Norton Security Online advertised at https://www.yahoo.com/subscriptions/products/norton-security-online that is currently on offer for $4.99 USD/month?  I know that Comcast/Xfinity used to offer a free Norton Security Online subscription to their customers up until January 2021 (see Gayathri_R's End-of-service Announcement for NortonLifeLock Subscription Offered by Comcast) but I had no idea that Yahoo was selling Norton Security Online subscriptions with until I read your post.

I checked out the "Premium Partnerships" listed at https://www.yahoo.com/subscriptions and it looks like Yahoo is selling subscriptions for antivirus products from several security companies like Norton, Malwarebytes and McAfee.  I don't see anything called "Norton Updater" on that page, but do you mean that Yahoo is just starting to roll out an update for Norton Security Online that includes Norton Software Updater, a feature that was added to Norton v22.21.11.46 products back in December 2021?   As SoulAsylum noted <above>, Norton Software Updater (like many other third-party software updaters) tends to be unreliable when it comes to finding the correct updates for your software.  I occasionally run the free SUMo utility to check for available updates for a few of my utilities that don't auto-update, but I would never allow SUMo or any other third-party software updater to actually download and install a suggested update, and if necessary I always go to the software developer's official website to download their recommended version.

The support article Get Started With Your Norton Security Online by AOL Subscription suggests that Yahoo/AOL's web-based Norton Security Online has fewer features than the Norton 360 products (purchased directly from Norton or an authorized re-seller) used by most posters in this forum. See the product comparison chart at https://us.norton.com/products/norton-360-antivirus-plus that shows the features bundles with Norton AntiVirus Plus, the least expensive security suite (1-device, 1-year annual subscription, Norton Smart Firewall but no Norton Secure VPN) that Norton offers.  I'm not sure you're getting a good deal by paying Yahoo for a Norton Security Online subscription.

Re: I am wondering if I get the Norton updater?

Thank you for your answers.  It looks like I won't use Norton Updater as I don't want to have problems with my pc.

I use Norton yahoo and it doesn't include vpn.  I like it no worry about a big subscription fee (just $4.99 a month).  I've had it pretty much since comcast stopped offering it free.  I  also use Malwarebytes (two lifetime licenses).  Norton yahoo may not include all the features of Norton, but it does what I need it to do.

Re: I am wondering if I get the Norton updater?

I should have told you I need a license for at least 2 computers (one for my brother also) so I have to get at least the one for 5 computers (which cost 60.00) and all total it is what I am paying.  I have no problem paying this.  If you have a yearly subscription from Norton you don't pay much the first year, but come the 2 that's when you start paying a lot more.  This way there is no need to worry about it  as you know you will have enough to cover the monthly charge.

Buying a subscription you only save with Norton the 1st year.  After that you pay at least what I am paying.  This way it is better and you don't have to worry about Norton subscription fees.

Re: I am wondering if I get the Norton updater?

Indeed, the Software Updater feature is a "throttled" release and will show up unannounced in history. I have that scenario as well with the Windows 10 machines I have Norton Security Ultra installed on. My one new HP laptop which has Windows 11 and Norton 360 Deluxe installed HAS the feature in history as well. I have that feature along with a couple others disabled so they do not run on their own by renaming two distinct files within Norton, having temporarily disabled Norton tamper protection. Renaming the files and saving then enabling tamper protection again coupled with a system restart.

In your case this offering may be a solution for the extra protection you need. And of course you can purchase a new license before renewal time at your favorite retailer saving some hard earned cash.

Hi ffwfire:

I haven't used Norton for a few years since I retired my Vista SP2 laptop in 2020 (Norton is one of the few companies that still provides legacy antivirus products for Win XP and Vista machines), but see my 12-May-2020 post in JDNells' Can't Get Past the CART IS EMPTY Screen on Norton's Site!.  To save money I always purchased a Norton product key on sale from an authorized local or online reseller like BestBuy, Staples or Amazon.  I kept that spare product key on hand and then renewed my subscription a day or two before it expired by entering the 25-digit product key into the Norton interface (Help | Account Information | Enter Product Key) as described in the support article Learn How to Use Your Norton Product Key (see the section titled "Activate or Renew Using a Product Key Purchased From a Store").  I live in Canada and never paid more than $22 CAD ($17 USD) for a 1-Year / 5-Device subscription.  Just note that NortonLifeLock now forces users to enter a credit card number and will automatically enable auto-renewal when you renew manually with a product key purchased from an authorized reseller.  However, you can log in to your Norton account at https://my.norton.com/account/subscriptions and delete your billing information and disable auto-renewal after your subscription has been manually renewed.

I haven't checked lately to see how much you can save by purchasing Norton 360 Deluxe (1-year, 3 or 5 devices) during a Boxing Day or Back-to-School sale, but one added benefit is that Norton 360 comes bundled with Norton Secure VPN, which I don't believe is included with your Yahoo-branded version of Norton Security Online.  NortonLifeLock has added a lot of unnecessary bloat to their Norton 360 product line in the past few years that I would never use (including Norton Software Updater, the optional Norton Crypto for mining Ethereum cryptocurrency, etc.) but the VPN does add value to their Norton 360 product line.

Many users prefer the convenience of having a Norton subscription that auto-renews every month or year, and some prefer to save money and renew their subscription themselves using a product key purchased on sale from an authorized reseller.  Both renewal methods have their own merit, and individuals must decide what's best for them.  I used Norton for over a decade but I personally don't like all the unnecessary bloat that NortonLifeLock has recently added to their Norton 360 product line, and don't see why I would need to give NortonLifeLock my credit card information when I've already pre-paid an authorized reseller for my product key, so I decided to stop using Norton after I purchased my Win 10 laptop.
